20.01.2022 Fears of Legal Risk From Bystander CPR Are Overblown in USA It's a fallacy that a witness to an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest who performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is likely to be held legally liable for any associated injuries, a new analysis suggests. Indeed, researchers found that delays in acting or failure to act in such cases is far more likely to lead to a lawsuit or other litigation.... PLEASE NOTE - In Tasmania - A good samaritan is not liable in any civil proceeding for anything done, or not done, by him or her in good faith and without recklessness See the full Civil Liability Ammendment Bill 2008 http://www.parliament.tas.gov.au//Bills/pdf/34_of_2008.pdf https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/921081

18.01.2022 Testing prevents Covid 19 deaths? Though testing is known to effectively reduce the risk of transmission, many experts are beginning to also associate more widespread testing with the statistic of greatest concern -- survival from the disease. The connection seems straightforward. Consider two countries with large outbreaks.... In South Korea, the rate of testing has been quite high (3,692 tests per million people as of March 8), and its mortality among those infected quite low (about 0.6%, or 66 deaths, at last count). By contrast, Italy tests about 826 people per million and its mortality among those with diagnosed infection is about 10 times higher, with more than 1,000 people dead from the disease. https://edition.cnn.com//south-korea-italy-coro/index.html

12.01.2022 Facemasks - Mandates for mask use in public during the recent COVID-19 pandemic, worsened by global shortage of commercial supplies, have led to widespread use of homemade masks and mask alternatives. It is assumed that wearing such masks reduces the likelihood for an infected person to spread the disease, but many of these mask designs have not been tested in practice. We have demonstrated a simple optical measurement method to evaluate the efficacy of masks to reduce the tr...ansmission of respiratory droplets during regular speech. In proof-of-principle studies, we compared a variety of commonly available mask types and observed that some mask types approach the performance of standard surgical masks, while some mask alternatives, such as neck fleece or bandanas, offer very little protection. 08.01.2022 Head injuries: Cheap drug 'could save thousands of lives a year' A cheap and widely available drug could save hundreds of thousands of lives a year worldwide if it was routinely given to people brought into hospital with head injuries, UK doctors say. Tranexamic acid helps stop bleeding in and around the brain when blood vessels have been torn.... A large international study in The Lancet now suggests it improves patient survival rates if given early enough. It cannot undo damage but can stop smaller bleeds becoming worse. https://www.bbc.com/news/health-49977827

08.01.2022 Women who suffer heart attacks are dying needlessly because they fail to recognise their symptoms and receive poorer care than men, says a British Heart Foundation report. Over 10 years, more than 8,000 women in England and Wales died unnecessarily after a heart attack, it found. Experts say there are inequalities in diagnosis, treatment and aftercare.... "Unconscious biases are limiting the survival chances of women," the report warns. It found that some commonly held myths - such as heart disease and heart attacks only affecting men - meant women were unaware of their risk, and slow to seek medical help. There is also a misperception that men and women experience completely different heart attack symptoms, but studies suggest that although symptoms can vary from person to person, chest pain is the most common symptom in both men and women. And younger women do have heart attacks, the report says, which should be taken seriously. https://www.bbc.com/news/health-49854678

01.01.2022 The "Sweet Spot" in adult CPR New research has identified the optimal combination of chest compression rate (CCR) and chest compression depth (CCD) when performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to improve survival rates. A team of researchers analyzed data on more than 3600 patients who had experienced an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and for whom CCR and CCD had been simultaneously recorded.... They found that the optimal CCR-CCD combination was 107 compressions per minute with a depth of 4.7 cm. When CPR was performed within 20% of this value, survival probability was significantly higher. The findings remained unchanged regardless of age, sex, presenting cardiac rhythm, or CPR adjunct use. Read more https://jamanetwork.com//jamacardiology/fullarticle/2747606
