23.01.2022 Today on the show I speak to Dr Clare Davison. Clare is a privately practising midwife who attends births at home as well as in hospital. She is also an academi...c who holds a PhD and she is a lecturer in midwifery at Edith Cowan University here in Perth, Western Australia. Clare and I chat all things birth and feminism. We start by chatting about her own births - always my favourite way to start an interview. We then chat about working inside the system, working outside the system, changing the system or maybe creating a new one? Ultimately a birth revolution! Clare is the woman who is changing the face of birth by educating the next generation of midwives and I am very grateful for her work, knowledge and passion. Dr Clare Davison is a midwife, academic and feminist. Clare is passionate about promoting and supporting physiological birth and working with women so that they can be empowered in their birth choices. Clare combines these passions by working as an independent midwife, providing holistic continuity of care to women; and as an academic teaching and hoping to inspire the next generation of midwives. 22.01.2022 Can human milk combat COVID-19? According to new research, very possibly. A team in the Netherlands, led by Dr Johannes Goudoever, found that over 80% of mother...s infected with COVID-19 produce antibodies in their milk. In some mothers, these antibodies can effecively neutralise the virus. This may not be the case after milk is heat-treated using the traditional method we use at Hearts and in most milk banks around the world, but another method of pasteurisation may enable us preserve this amazing property and produce a new treatment. Dr Goudoever's team is now working on this, and we hope to help in future studies any way we can. 17.01.2022 I have had a few people who say I know you are a private practice midwife but what do you actually do?!?' So just so you know As a private practice midwife I work independently, collaborating as necessary with different maternity hospitals within WA to provide care to all pregnant women. My work enables me to provide appointments in your own home supporting you from the beginning of your pregnancy and up to 6 weeks after your baby is born. My care is personalised to you ...and your family. The appointments during your pregnancy, check that you and baby are doing well and also to discuss anything you may need support with including inductions, preparing for breastfeeding, debriefing a previous birth and antenatal education. By offering continuity of care to a woman and her family a trusting relationship can be built. Postnatally I can see you up to 6 weeks to perform physical checks on you and baby and also provide support with breastfeeding, bottle feeding, sleeping etc. I can refer you to hospital and I have completed further education to be able to write blood forms and ultrasound forms as necessary throughout your antenatal and postnatal period. If continuity of care in your pregnancy is something you are looking for. Please call us on 0414414334 or email is at [email protected]
15.01.2022 Have you heard the news? Royal Aust & NZ College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists RANZCOG has suggested that all hospitals in COVID-19 hotspots ban water imm...ersion in labour and birth for ALL women Has this rolled out at your local hospital? "However, in the setting of increased community transmission of coronavirus (COVID-19), services are advised to suspend the use of water immersion for labour and birth for all women. The protection of our maternity and neonatal health care workforce is essential. PPE is not effective when wet and consequently, the use of water immersion during this period presents an unacceptable risk." Oh wait, it gets even better... "Consideration should be given to early epidural in labour as an option for analgesia e.g. as an alternative to nitrous oxide." What the actual!? An unacceptable risk!? What about the risk to women and babies? The risk of early epidurals which increase the likelihood of caesareans. The risk, when it's worn by women and babies, is acceptable, is it? All this based on not one shred of evidence! #ENOUGH The Australian College of Midwives (ACM) have written a wonderful statement contesting this with some absolutely fantastic points including: COVID-19 is airborne, so water immersion is actually likely to REDUCE the transmission risk! Water dilutes viral particles, further reducing transmission potential when compared to land based births. Baths enable social distancing between the woman and her care providers/supports. Women giving birth in water often 'receive' their babies themselves, reducing the contact between the care provider and woman. There are already stringent cleaning procedures in place to disinfect birth pools post water immersion. Give us our water back!! Do NOT take one of the most useful natural pain relief options away from women, especially not when there is absolutely no evidence to warrant it Jerusha Sutton Doula Photographer UPDATE: Add your name to the petition - https://www.change.org/p/the-royal-australian-and-new-zeala

12.01.2022 A great little guide for everyone who is breastfeeding.
11.01.2022 Being a part of, empowering and supporting a woman and her partner through their pregnancy to parenthood journey is an honour and a privilege that we as Midwives get to see everyday. Sometimes as Midwives we have to stand back, take a breath and try to fathom out how we managed to be in such a fortunate position, watching a strong, powerful woman become a mum. Being able to empower and support a client and her partner through their first pregnancy, labour and birth and postna...tal journey ensuring they are aware of all their choices is an honour. When the labour and birth doesn’t quite go according to their plan but they are aware that there are other choices they can make that ensures they stay in control of their journey and hearing and reading the words that you are compassionate, empathetic, empowering and patient you know you have done your job to the best of your ability. First Beat Midwives is here to guide and work alongside you from the moment you get a positive pregnancy test, through your antenatal period then once discharged from the hospital post birth we will see you up to 6 weeks in your own home. If this is something you are interested in please contact us on 0414414334 or [email protected] to discuss further.
09.01.2022 So after receiving an email from the Director of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Joondalup Hospital and having a very positive meeting to discuss a working relationship to achieve the best outcome for our joint patients, I am pleased to announce that First Beat Midwives now has a shared care agreement with Joondalup Hospital. What does this mean? Well, it means that your pregnancy care can be shared between First Beat Midwives and Joondalup Hospital. Shared Care improves the co...nvenience of care for you as a low risk pregnant woman by delivering shared care with a community based provider (First Beat Midwives)who can perform antenatal checks in the convenience of your own home rather than having long waiting periods in the clinic for your antenatal appointment, only having to attend hospital clinic appointments once or twice throughout your pregnancy. If this is something you feel you would benefit from please contact us at First Beat Midwives and we can have a chat about your options. Phone or text 0414 414 334 or email [email protected]
