10.01.2022 This photo is one of the FirstCall "Out and About" 4G medical alarms that we have been trialling lately. This type of medical alarm is basically a pendant sized mobile phone which includes a 4G mobile phone module, a GPS satellite receiver, a fall-detector, and a battery. It can be worn as a pendant, as a belt-clip, or on the arm. The advantage of this type of Medical Alarm is that it will work anywhere there is a good 3G or 4G mobile phone signal, so it can go wherever you g...o. When the SoS button is pushed it sends text messages to your emergency contacts to let them know you need help. They will see your location on a Google Map on their smartphone. It also makes voice phone calls as a back-up. As the pendant is basically a mobile phone, it needs to be recharged regularly; at least every couple of days. It is also more expensive than a conventional in-home medical alarm and has ongoing mobile network charges of about $60 per year (so long as its only used for occasional emergency and test calls). This is a good choice for people who are still very active and need protection away from home. It is not really suitable for some people who are confined to the home or who would have trouble remembering to recharge. For more information see www.firstcallmedicalalarms.com.au
07.01.2022 Should I use a 24/7 Monitoring Service? The answer to this question depends very much on your personal circumstances. Professional 24/7 monitoring is more expensive but it does give a higher level of security, especially if you have a medical condition that may need an immediate response, or if you do not have family or friends near-by. The monitoring service also regularly checks the operation of the equipment. Family and friends monitored medical alarms can be programmed t...o call 000 directly, but unless the emergency services operator is able to talk to you they cannot assign an appropriate priority to the ambulance call-out. A professional monitoring service operator is able to relay the degree of urgency to the 000 operator based on your medical history, and achieve an appropriate ambulance priority. 05.01.2022 This photo is of a time proven FirstCall "Home Safe" medical alarm that connects to the NBN or an old-style exchange telephone line. It's used only around the home, but is very reliable and has the advantage that the pendant never needs recharging - something that is very challenging for some people. When used with a Telstra Gen-2 or Gen-3 NBN Smart Modem with a back-up power supply, (the PS is free to Telstra medical priority customers), it overcomes all the NBN power and r...eliability issues. It's probably the best choice for people who spend most of their time at home. It doesn't have any ongoing costs unless you choose an optional 24/7 monitoring service.
