24.01.2022 Today you’ll see the industry celebrating International Coffee Day and shouting out coffee lovers, Roasters, baristas, importers, producers, growers and all those who work in between. We’d like you to spend a little time today reflecting on the parts of our industry that must be addressed; the continuous history of slavery. You’re going to see a lot of these hands (pictured), usually disembodied and unidentifiable from the human who use them to work for basic necessities. Tho...se who often work hard to just break even to grow and sustain their coffee trees for the next year. These are hands that are almost undeniably stuck in a cycle of modern slavery. While not necessarily pushed by the force or entrapped by others to continue in this situation, they are stuck in ‘economic’ forces and inequality that was established at the beginning of coffee trade. The beginning of us enjoying our daily coffee all around the world commenced with the European colonial enslavement of much of the tropics and fertile areas (East Africa for example), using free labour by taking people against their will from their families to grow, maintain and process the coffee for the consumption of those abroad. This set the stage for coffee to be the affordable and mostly inexpensive beverage it is today. As slavery was slowly abolished throughout the last century, the people whose ways of life had been so disrupted by multiple generations of forced slavery by the European slavers/traders are then left with little choice but to find a living in a pre-establishes system of trade which never factored in their worth or existence into it. As the price of coffee was originally set on a price standard that never factored in the worth, livelihood or labour value of everyone along the supply chain, when those families who endured open slavery for generations took jobs again to earn a living, the expectation that they are not really paid or part of the equation was inherent to their job of picking and processing. This has nothing whatsoever to do with the potential, worth or goodness of the people stuck in this
21.01.2022 HONEY PROCESS NICARAGUA SELVA NEGRA has landed! Last years Honey disappeared pretty quickly due to its phenomenal flavour, so this year Mausi was kind enough to do double! And of course there is also some freshly harvested washed Selva Negra, so that is now back in stock after the early season crop ran out. Samples will be dispatching Wednesday, if you haven’t requested these already, please get in touch as we don’t know how long this will last again. #firstcropcoffee #nicaragua #selvanegra #honey #honeyprocess #washed #matagalpa #blackforest
19.01.2022 While unpacking our container from El Salvador today we found some amazing gifts from @castaneda1523. Some beautiful indigo prints of our logos handmade by @grace_guirola who owns the Indigo hacienda. She is bringing back this incredible art form which holds historical significance for El Salvador. The pigment known as ‘blue gold’ indigo was used by the Mayans in the Mesoamerican region for colouring artwork and was later a traded commodity, before dying out in the 1800s. Sonia surprised us with this beautiful gift that shared the container with an even more exciting gift, her first natural process Himalaya coffee!
14.01.2022 Straight from the top shelf! Tomorrow cafes and restaurants re-open for dine in service in Victoria If you’re able to, make some time this week to get out and support a cafe or restaurant within your 25km zone... and then do it again. It’s been tough but as a community, city and state we can all be proud to be coming out the other side. It’s important to note that many baristas, chefs and floor staff are either casually employed or on visas, which means there was no suppor...t for them through this time. Some small businesses have been doing this themselves to help people through this time, so going out for breakfast, lunch and coffee will be a huge help for these businesses. Lastly, remember that there was less than 48 hours turn around time for these businesses to go from closed or take out only to full service dine-in options. That’s a big change and requires staff, government guidelines for service to followed and of course stock! So be kind, be patient and be generous. In Australia we have one of the greatest hospitality industries in the world, so let’s celebrate with a brew! #firstcropcoffee #victoria #australia #celebrate #reopening #coffee #specialtycoffee #brunch
13.01.2022 Apparently today is international coffee day! We celebrate coffee everyday because it’s the greatest drink in the world, but we’ll take a whole day dedicated to our favourite bean juice anyway. Here’s a little video from Karatu Estate in Tanzania we took while taking a drive around the coffee plantation...enjoy #firstcropcoffee #internationalcoffeeday2020 #internationalcoffeeday #coffee
13.01.2022 El Salvador Himalaya Natural pouring in our office today This coffee is an excellent example of natural processing, highlighting and amplifying the delicious fruits that are present in the washed coffee, yet clean and palatable so as not to be overly challenging. Whether espresso or filter, this coffee is spectacular
13.01.2022 Another harvest from Nyakabugi Co-op is with us. Coming from Kiambu County, just outside of Nairobi, Nyakabugi is consistently one of the best coffees we bring in. So good our tasting notes actually describe this coffee as ‘delicious’ #firstcropcoffee #kenya #nyakabugi #kiambu #nairobu #coffee #specialtycoffee

08.01.2022 A special delivery from the @commonfolkcoffee crew this week, the latest batch of @zukukacoffee. @commonfolkcoffee have helped develop this project in Uganda since 2014 and are starting to see some phenomenal results in the quality and flavour profile of these coffees. We’ve helped out on the export/import and logistics side of things to support them in their goal of blessing this community in Uganda. Their packaging is pretty wild but it certainly matches the vibrant and delicious coffees inside the bag, so make sure you check the project out and buy a bag to support the farmers involved with @zukukacoffee #firstcropcoffee #commonfolkcoffee #specialtycoffee #coffee #uganda #zukukabora #unicorn #unicorncoffee
