25.01.2022 THIS is early childhood at its best! We love your work Pelican Waters Golden Beach Kindergarten and Childcare.

25.01.2022 Like all things in nature, children's developmental learning has a natural unfolding, and each stage is important for the next stage. Providing the environment for babies and children to have freedom of movement, with unrushed time to explore and master movement, is part of building a strong foundation for EVERY baby and child. Part of the joy of being an educator is noticing what the child can do independently, and recognising each child's progress in their own learning jou...rney. Mastery of each stage of movement supports the child's sensory integration, physical coordination, self-confidence, competence and eventually independence. Part 1 of our online course, 'Transforming Pedagogy for authentic learning' explores the ingredients for children's authentic learning, and the key requirements to support developmental learning. 24.01.2022 Do you seize opportunities (like our heavy rain today) for 'BEING'? Find out more about 'BEING' and the fabulous practice at Bribie Island Community Kindergarten here: https://firstdoor.thinkific.com/courses/authentic-learning BEING: "Childhood is a time to be, to seek and make meaning of the world."... "Being recognises the significance of the here and now in children's lives. It is about the present and them knowing themselves, building and maintaining relationships with others, engaging with life's joys and complexities, and meeting challenges in everyday life. The early childhood years are not solely preparation for the future but also about the present." (The EYLF for Australia, 2009, p.7) See: www.firstdoor.com.au

23.01.2022 The brillant Nathan Wallis sharing crucial understandings for a childs first three years, when brains are being wired for life through relationship and environment. Weird isnt it, that we think children get set up for their life with what they achieve at school... but really so much is predetermined by their experience in their preschool years. The most important learning years in a lifetime. Its reassuring to see more Early Childhood services moving to primary care, with careful rostering to ensure consistency in relationship and interactions. Hes right, educators come into this career to establish rewarding relationships and to make a huge contribution to each childs wellbeing, learning and development.

22.01.2022 It was a complete joy to spend another day at Bush Kindy, with the team and children of Bribie Island Community Kindergarten, and to film another important professional conversation with Narelle! Enjoy this little peek inside Excellence in Early Childhood Education and Care.

22.01.2022 It was fabulous to spend last Saturday with 22 fab team members at Chatterbox Early Learning & Child Care. Our team workshop explored creating an active learning environment, with a hands-on experience to see and feel the difference between being an active or passive learner! One group experienced uninterrupted 'child-led', play-based learning using loose parts, and the other group experienced a teacher-led 'group time'. WOW! The difference between the two groups blew our m...inds! Guess which group enjoyed a blissful experience with a quiet, engaged hum of participation... and which group experienced boredom, frustration and 'tantrums'?! This workshop was based on Chapter 3 of our online course: Transforming Pedagogy for authentic learning. See: https://firstdoor.thinkific.com/courses/authentic-learning

22.01.2022 Child-led with a purpose = self-motivation and authentic learning. Can you imagine all the experimentation, trial and error, peer scaffolding and contribution that happened to create an operating Zip Line?! To learn more about supporting authentic learning see: https://firstdoor.thinkific.com/courses/authentic-learning... We love your work Bribie Island Community Kindergarten.

20.01.2022 Were all adapting from the sudden loss of life as we knew it, including the important Three Rs: Routines, Rituals And Rhythm. The Three Rs give us a sense of predictability of what happens next, and when each day. This supports and stimulates childrens (and our own) security, self-regulation, wellbeing, and ability to adapt. So weve created a daily planner tool to help bring back the three Rs, so you can cultivate new daily predictable rhythms and routines. It encour...ages you to think about and discuss the things you can do, to bring a healthy balance for wellbeing in your daily routine: Connection - Being helpful - Brain food - Feel good - Nature or garden - Active - Screen free - Healthy eating - Fun. Download your free daily Three Rs planner here: https://firstdoor.com.au/about-/early-childhood-specialists

19.01.2022 Were sad to need to postpone our graduation celebration this month, so please join with us in celebrating the success of these two, First Door qualified educators. Stacy, one of our fabulous apprentice students from Sesame Lane Care & Kindergarten received her Diploma qualification in March. Stacy has shown dedication in both completing this qualification and in putting her learning into practice. This is reflected in the wonderful environments Stacy is creating for the chi...ldren in the nursery. Congratulations Stacy, from Jodie and the team at First Door. Huge congratulations also go to Jemma. Its a massive achievement to juggle senior school with the workload in this Certificate lll qualification, and it is wonderful to see Jemmas success in completing her school based traineeship. Special thanks to the fab team at Northpine Christian College Childcare and Early Learning Centre for all you do to support our students success. We wish both Stacy and Jemma a wonderful career in Early Childhood Education and Care.

18.01.2022 Surround yourself with people that support you to be your best, and cherish them. Last night was a special and fun celebration for our fab team. Im totally blessed to have these three, Justine, Jodie and Shirley by my side to create and share First Doors professional learning experience.

18.01.2022 PLAY is still widely misunderstood for its massive role in learning, development and wellbeing. . Despite the research, educators feel pressured to prematurely teach young children, rather than promoting the vital role of PLAY in Early Childhood - 7 years. P - Promotes problem solving, imagination, creativity and agency.... . L - Leads exploration, discovery and development of new skills. . A - Always is led by the child, and belongs to the child. . Y- Yields the highest form of learning, with involved and active learners. Young children need educators that deeply respect the value of PLAY; and, advocate for childrens right and need to PLAY.

17.01.2022 In this beautiful audio story, Little Possum learns the joy of slowing down and staying home. Encourage children to listen to this story with their eyes closed. This helps blank the canvas to support focus, listening, and their imagination. Little Possum Stays Home, by Wild Hearts Play.

17.01.2022 Quality Early Childhood education embraces the legacy of Sir Ken Robinsons work, seeing creativity as a disposition for learning and a quality to nurture in children, rather than to stifle. Its sad to learn of the passing of Sir Ken Robinson on 21st August. Lets continue his mission to protect childrens creativity and to advocate for change in the education system.

11.01.2022 Cheers to joy, through finding new ways in our new world. This is me with our First Door team, having Friday night drinks together... over zoom! . Our success in adjusting to our new world will show in how we can adapt and focus on new ways of belonging, being and becoming. . Special thanks to my dear hubby who loves catching golden moments.

11.01.2022 Its too easy to think of the child, their parent/s, other people... as the PROBLEM. Then its about them, and THEIR challenging behaviour, that is making our life difficult. The trouble is that kind of blame game doesnt help us to support the child, and can take our focus away from finding ways to part of the solution. . But worse, this thinking spreads and gets stuck. It can lead to the child being labelled as difficult, and this label becoming accepted by others. The ...tragic part is, this label becomes accepted by the child themselves and they start to live within that box of unhelpful expectations. This child is led by our thinking/approach to have poor self-esteem, and unhealthy development of behaviour and learning. . Do you feel trapped and unsupported through lack of knowledge/skills to understand behaviour, or in ways to support childrens wellbeing and healthy learning and development? . Behaviour Rethink guides educators to understand behaviour with strategies to support each child to flourish, by changing OUR approach and environment. . 10.01.2022 When we accelerate children's development ahead of their own readiness, it's like moving furniture into a house that has not yet been built. Childhood is THE precious time to build each person’s strong foundations for life. Young children need unrushed, play-based learning with lots of time for exploration, discovery, and mastery at each stage of their own developmental pathway. This process brings the child joy and competence, which supports their healthy self-esteem. Succ...ess builds success. Educators, teachers and parents need to stop treating childhood as if it is a race or a test of abilities. This means speaking up about the pressure and the implications of early/premature development, e.g. rushing a child to sit, walk, read, write, count and their early "preparation for school". Let's protect joyful childhoods, and see each child flourish with strong foundations for life. Learn more: https://firstdoor.thinkific.com/courses/authentic-learning

09.01.2022 Slowly and steadily, lets work together to ditch the phrase and routine of "Clean up time" . For children to engage in deep, play-based learning they need to have the time and space with unrushed and unpressured use of open-ended materials. We are supporting learning when children feel their play is valued and respected. . For this "respectful play environment" to exist; when children are finished playing, they need to put things back, ready for the next child to use. So ins...tead of "Clean up time", its about changing to using and understanding "Returning things where they BELONG." . When supported, expected and familiar, "returning things where they belong" becomes the norm. If not, then its part of our role to encourage and guide children to do this. . By teaching children and educators that childrens play is highly valued, and that all items have a home, children FEEL respected and they LEARN about care and respect. This is all part of authentic learning about fairness, rights of others, belonging, and becoming socially and environmentally responsible. . 07.01.2022 Traditional Belonging, Being and Becoming and cultural wisdom for children.

07.01.2022 Such an amazing moment to hand Rianna her Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care this morning. Rianna completed her Certifcate III studies while at school and through relentlessly battling a significant illness. Rianna, your professionalism and maturity in your studies and your practice is beyond your years. You truly are a natural early childhood professional. We are all so very proud of you.

07.01.2022 It was wonderful to be reunited with Traci and her team at the newly renovated Rothwell Kids ELC. I was in my happy place seeing the combination of these beautiful Reggio-inspired environments with their shared team pedagogy focused on the competent child and promoting agency, providing choice, freedom and space for being. The result is stunning; with children able to explore, discover, interact, and be where they need to be in their centre. We hope you are inspired by thi...s centre and team that is operating outside the four walls. Their approach is to see the centre as a whole, and more like a home, with different rooms and spaces for childrens belonging, being and becoming. This video is the newest addition to our nine videos showcasing excellence to support you to lead inspired curriculum and pedgogy, in our eLearning course: Flourish as an Educational Leader. See the course details here: https://9zxnfv3r.pages.infusionsoft.net PS. Sadly our videographer wasnt with me, so I pulled my camera out on the spot to capture and share this fabulous makeover in environment and practice with you.

05.01.2022 Congratulations Jackie! How wonderful to share your success, and to see you holding your well-deserved Diploma of Leadership and Management qualification. You are a fabulous example of the satisfaction achieved from conquering barriers; and, that there is always so much to learn - no matter how long our experience in leadership roles. It is wonderful to know you are implementing your leadership and management professional learning with your team, in a beautiful new Early Learning Centre.

05.01.2022 Heres a great breathing strategy to use, and role model with children - that helps us all to recalibrate from overload/stress. Take ten uses deep inhalations and exhalations as you move through your ten fingers. This simple strategy supports us to slow down and calm ourselves creating a focus to help build resilience.

03.01.2022 Have you watched children with the ongoing urge to move objects from place to place... in their hands, pockets, buckets, baskets, bags, backpacks or anything else? This is known as TRANSPORTATION schema. This play urge helps children to explore and learn about quantity, volume, weight, distance and journeys. Through TRANSPORTATION schema the child is constantly exploring and discovering - what works and what doesn’t work, and this self-motivated exploration develops skills li...ke problem solving, persistence and resilience. As with all schematic play, these repeated play urges help the child to predict, investigate, test and experiment to reach new understandings. All of this work enables the child to construct knowledge and to establish cognitive structures (schemas) in the brain. When we understand the value of schematic play, we can begin to appreciate and value the child authentic learning experience. See the online course: Transforming pedagogy for authentic learning www.firstdoor.com.au #earlychildhoodeducation #earlychildhoodteacher #earlychildhoodeducator #authenticlearning #learningdispositions #letthembelittle #letthemplay #playbasedlearning #schematicplay

03.01.2022 "Are they ready for school next year?" is a question currently being asked about children as young as 4 years of age In Queensland. Andrea Isitt, Director of First Door Early Childhood Professional Learning and Andrew Oberthur, School Principal and author of Are You Ready for Primary School This Year? discuss the big questions about: - when to start a child (with options for enrolment age variations), and - how best to support children to be ready for school.... We encourage early childhood educators, parents and primary school teachers to work together in understanding each child, and towards five outcomes to develop in children to build strong foundations for success in school and life. This video is from the online course for educators, Transforming pedagogy for authentic learning. See: https://firstdoor.thinkific.com/courses/authentic-learning www.firstdoor.com.au

03.01.2022 Today I missed my morning walk, then missed my shower and stayed in my walking clothes ALL day! Were all adapting from the sudden loss of life as we knew it, including the important Three Rs: Routines, Rituals And Rhythm. The Three Rs give us a sense of predictability of what happens next, and when, each day. This supports and stimulates childrens (and our own) security, self-regulation, wellbeing, and ability to adapt.... So weve created a daily planner tool to help bring back the three Rs. It encourages us to think about and discuss the things we CAN do in our daily routine, towards a healthy balance for wellbeing. Lets cultivate new predictable rhythms and routines, with: Connection - Being helpful - Brain food - Feel good - Nature or garden - Active - Screen free - Healthy eating - Fun. 03.01.2022 When we slow down to observe, we see the competence in each child and the authentic learning that comes from child-directed play.

02.01.2022 I had the absolute pleasure of delivering Nicole her hard-earned Diploma today. You should be so proud of your achievement Nicole. We are!!! This Diploma certificate is testament to your hard work and dedication. Congratulations

02.01.2022 Such wisdom here for both educators and parents in this conversation with two outstanding educators, Janet Lansbury and Teacher Tom. "Its about listening, not just with your ears but with your whole soul, your whole being. Because, first of all, you demonstrate to the child youre connected to them, that youre there for them and you give them that sense of security. But the other piece, too, is thats the only way youre really, really, really going to learn about them, rather than just fall back on your preconceived notions." Teacher Tom

02.01.2022 Wishing every educator and parent the liberty to SLOW DOWN. When we're constantly rushing we miss out on being present, enthusiastic, curious and connected to others. Slowing down means we can see more, listen more and APPRECIATE more! We become calmer with the space to be intentional, responding thoughtfully instead of reacting... creating a sense of calm around us.... Being caught in the busy trap and being rushed reduces joy, connectedness and wellbeing - not just for us but for the children/adults around us. Transforming Pedagogy supports educators to SLOW down in their practice. See: https://firstdoor.thinkific.com/courses/authentic-learning

02.01.2022 Last week Justine had the absolute pleasure of handing Rabina her well-earned Diploma Certificate. Rabina has shown continuous passion and dedication. Well done, Rabina you should be very proud of your achievement. Best of luck on your next adventure!
