25.01.2022 Runners - are you strong enough to be running? Here are the BASICS we require of our coaches athletes and Run Group runners BEFORE starting up a running program: 30-40 single leg calf raises 20 single leg squats with good form 60 second front plank 30 second side plank... 30 second single leg balance (standing) Decent calf flexibility (a knee-to-wall measure of 10cm+) Try them out! You might just be surprised how you go. These are the bread and butter basics for strong run foundations; on top of this you may have your own unique issues (like a history of ankle sprains, or knee dislocation) that need some behind the scenes strength work as well, to allow for an enjoyable and injury-free running progression. Runners at all levels can benefit from strength work above and beyond the above exercises as well, but if you’re not a huge lover of strength work and you just want to run...then these are a great base point for you. Happy running! #livelifepainfree #runhappy #injuryprevention #runcoach #keepitsimple See more

20.01.2022 ATTENTION MUMMIES OUT THERE! Are you ready to start exercising after having your precious bundle of joy but not sure where to start? Do you find it hard try leave the house without them? Well take them with you!! Why not come try our Mums and Bubs class? After growing another human being for 9 months womens bodies get stretched and stressed and can find it challenging to return to a functional state. Returning to a Bootcamp or running too early after birth can lead ...to higher risk of injuries or long term complications. Our Mums and Bubs class allows mothers to bring their babies along where they will be retrained to use their core and deep pelvic muscles that stretch and can even split during pregnancy. We aim to strengthen the deeper intrinsic muscles to create global strength for stronger mummies. The class is interactive allowing the bubs to be apart of the exercise when required. This can be the perfection opportunity to venture out of the house, or catch up with your mothers group while exercising! If you are interested or want more information, message Ashlee or call the clinic on 4783 7284

20.01.2022 Exercise during pregnancy... Is it safe? YES! Is it fun? HOPEFULLY! Is it good for you and bubba? YES. Is it confusing and/or stressful? DOESNT HAVE TO BE! As a Physio and athlete, I get so many questions about how to exercise while pregnant and the truth is, it depends is often my answer. Even with my own 2 pregnancies, each was very different. With the first I was Ironman fit going into it - training hard 18-20 hours a week - so worked with my doctor to work out a re...asonable plan we were both happy with and was able to keep running and swimming 10-12 hours/week right up until 8 months pregnant (above pic ). By the second pregnancy I had less time, was less fit, and the seasons werent as favourable (read: HOT!) so I adapted and did more swimming, strength work, yoga and Pilates in the air con at our clinic, aiming for around 30-60 mins/day. With both pregnancies I had hyperemesis and I did look forward to exercise, as it was usually the only time I didnt feel like vomiting! #bonus Some pregnancies do have precautions for exercise, but thankfully the vast majority of pregnant women can and should exercise. Once your doctor has given you the green light, your Physio or Exercise Physiologist can sit down with you and answer any questions you have, come up with a plan, help with aches and pains as your body grows, and generally try to make it a more enjoyable experience for you! Ive had so many yoga and Pilates Babies come through my classes now and have enjoyed guiding many women through reformer and gym work while pregnant...I often wonder what the babies think of all the action going on outside around them Lastly, you dont even have to be a fully fledged athlete beforehand to start exercising while pregnant - working with guidance you can start from scratch and still experience all of the benefits. Research consistently shows that exercise is not just safe, but is even key to an expectant womans mind-body, mum-baby health. A fitness-focussed pregnancy is also your ally in the delivery room because maintaining exercise throughout pregnancy is associated with a shorter labor and lower rates of C section - K. Melzer et al (2010) See more

19.01.2022 Running is a cyclic activity involving all joints and muscle groups in the lower limbs, including the intrinsic foot muscles aka the core muscles of the feet. There is a significant correlation in collegiate American football players between maximal intrinsic foot muscle strength and the ability to change direction in agility tests (Yuasa et al 2018). Further, 8 weeks of toe flexor exercises to improve those core foot muscles decreased 50m sprint times in men (Hashimoto 2014). So, next time youre working out those core muscles....dont forget the ones in the feet!! #painfreeforlife #coreworkout #strongfeet #physiotherapy

15.01.2022 So many of our coached athletes just quietly and humbly ticking away, laying the foundation bricks to their individual masterpieces during this odd moment in time with no concrete race goals and no group training sessions to bolster motivation. Your efforts arent unnoticed, and Pat and I are proud of each and every one of you - you will look back on these months of training as being some of your greatest work once racing comes back I have no doubt. Pat is here with our wise...st (oldest) member of our running squad - Claire - who along with many others is doing such a great job right now with her training amidst COVID and many other challenges life is throwing at her. As the great Tony Robbins says: your goal in life is to see things as better than they are. Thats not positive thinking; thats VISION. 14.01.2022 What is RED-S? Being able to tolerate pain and ignore the physical body to train harder is often what makes a good athlete; but all too often it can be the exact trait that eventually brings them down.... Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) refers to impaired physiological function including reduced metabolic rate, menstrual dysfunction, bone health, immunity, protein synthesis and cardiovascular health - all caused by relative energy deficiency i...e not eating enough for the volume of an athletes training load. It can occur in both males and females. These athletes may present with stress fractures due to decreased bone turnover; absence of or changes to periods in females; compulsive exercise routines; often a low body mass in the early stages; and eating disturbances - including both dieting and disordered eating, or simply not eating enough to fuel their heavy training loads. Athletic performance will eventually be affected, and typically the athlete will have more illnesses, injuries and general fatigue. Eventually, the body can start a protest of sorts, lowering the resting metabolic rate and gaining fat mass to protect itself and the athlete, despite heavy training and reduced energy intake. RED-S can be treated, but requires input from a well chosen medical team including a sports physician, Physio, and sports dietician. If you would like to know more or are concerned about yourself or your child, please reach out to your Physio or sports doctor. #buildinghealthyathletes #reds #stressfracture #injury #ed See more

14.01.2022 Almost half of Australians will experience a mental illness in their lifetime. Youth have the highest prevalence of mental illness, with around 1 in 5 (21.2%) of young people (15-19 years old) meeting the criteria for a serious mental illness. 1 in 5 mothers with babies aged under 2 will be diagnosed with either perinatal or preexisting depression. 54% of people with mental illness do NOT access any treatment - compared to over 80% of people with a physical injury or ...illness. THIS NEEDS TO CHANGE. With so many resources available now, often it is the stigma surrounding mental health or the cost of treatment that stops people seeking help. PLEASE, if you have concerns about yourself or a loved one, and especially your teenage children or the new mums in your circle, see your gp to have a chat about the many options available for help. Medicare subsidies are available for psychology and your gp can be a great partner in your care. 12.01.2022 Massive shout out to all of our First in Physio Run Group athletes who did their Virtual Sugar Rush races over the last 2 weekends - Pat and I couldnt be more proud of you all for turning up, putting it all out there and digging deep to finish off what you started in training With seperate and quiet start lines, empty streets and a finish line with no atmosphere, you all showed why we run - for the achievement, the growth, and for the love of moving our healthy bodies w...ith gratitude. Onwards and upwards, we carry on - and hopefully will get to cross some more finish lines later this year Our list of 21.1km legends: Patrick Shannon 1:32; John Alford 1:36; Mark Watson 1:38; Laura Quagliata 1:50; Kelli Dabelstein 1:57; Maria Scuderi 1:57; Tim Ewens 2:06; Todd Horan 2:09; Colleen Pitcher 2:18; Claire Faulkner 2:27; Kieran Nolan 2:28; Rod Pitcher 2:48; Vicky Brennan smashed her 10km in 55mins, and our own Richard Martin decided a road half marathon wasnt hard enough so hit the trails for a hilly half in 2:06. You guys made us so proud - and 2020, in the midst of a global pandemic - has ended up being the year we have had the most of you successfully complete a half marathon at the Sugar Rush (with no actual race). #soproud #onwardsandupwards #halfmarathon #runyourselfhappy @ Ayr, Queensland See more

12.01.2022 Injury prevention programs that include plyometrics show a 55% injury risk reduction vs conventional injury prevention programs which only show a 26% injury risk reduction (Rossler et al 2014 @mickhughes.physio )... With the return of competition sports happening right now, we are seeing a lot of injuries start to roll in. While we cant always prevent all injuries, especially in contact sports, a well-planned injury prevention program with strength work and plyometrics, technique and mobility work will put you in the best position to finish out the season strong We can help, so feel free to reach out for advice! #painfreeforlife #physio #practicewhatyoupreach @ FirstIn Physio Pty Ltd

10.01.2022 Are you one of the 20% of Australians with a TMJ dysfunction? Interestingly, the prevalence is higher among younger people, and twice as prevalent in women as men (Macfarlane et al, 2002). Symptoms can include difficulty eating hard foods like apples and steak; headaches; clicking or pain in the jaw; teeth grinding; and upper neck pain, among others. There are many causes of TMJ pain: most are chronic like teeth grinding or teeth/bite misalignment , or degeneration to the dis...c and ligaments in the joint; and a few are from one incident, such as being punched in the jaw or having a hard tackle in football. Regardless of the cause or how long youve had symptoms for, the good news is they can be treated and outcomes are very good. Physios and dentists with specialist training in TMJ dysfunction can help you to get back to life with a functional and pain free jaw. 03.01.2022 Sure, you can get to a marathon or Ironman start line with a 4 or 6 month crash course training block, but how long will you have to spend afterwards repairing your hormones, metabolism, body...mind? Hopefully none; potentially a year or more. Take the journey with your coach and address the fundamentals first - its ALL important: sleep, nutrition, technique, strength, mindset, recovery. Then with each training session, a brick is added to the wall; piece by piece we build something indestructible yet flexible enough to line up on race day and really, truly enjoy the experience. Therein lies the magic: its about the journey and becoming the most whole and complete athlete you can be; race day is the celebration. #enjoythejourney #buildingathletes #coach #athlete

02.01.2022 NETBALL and ANKLE INJURIES - Does bracing and taping ankles work to prevent injuries, or are we just taping feelings? Or worse, causing other injuries up the chain?? Well, according to the research, the answer is a resounding we dont know. We do know that ankle injuries account for a whopping 30% of all injuries in high school basketball and netball players (Messina, 1999). And we do know that in netball theres a culture of ankle bracing and taping aimed at preventin...g future and subsequent ankle injuries. For some athletes, these techniques may work, if only for psychological reasons - feeling safer, or neurological reasons - increased feedback of where the athletes ankle joint is in space, which might help to prevent an injury. But its also worth considering that some research has shown increased risk of ACL injury when athletes are taped/braced at the ankle joint (Leppanen 2017). Unfortunately some of the worst ankle fractures and sprains weve seen are in athletes who neglected a thorough rehab program post-injury, and opted to use a brace or tape instead - the bad news is, if the ankle is weak enough you will damage it whether its taped or not (shocking I know, but tape can tear and braces loosen). The takeaway? Wear a brace or tape the ankles if its something youve always done and it helps you psychologically. But dont neglect your prehab (or rehab if the injury is already present) exercises - ensure you have solid foundations of strength, balance, mobility and endurance through the ankles, knees and hips in order to lower your injury risk while participating in a sport thats so physically demanding (and often on unforgiving surfaces). Stay fit and healthy and most importantly - have fun out there! #netball #anklesprain #brokenankle #prehab #tapingfeelings See more
