22.01.2022 The Dungala-Kaiela Writing Awards are open to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with a connection to the Murray Goulburn region. The Awards began in 2012 to provide an opportunity for writing and self-expression in the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. There is a here is a category for Aboriginal Languages of the region in any written form, across three age levels: the Junior section (Prep to Grade 6); the Youth section (13 years to 18 ye...ars); and the Open section (19 years and over). Some Aboriginal language words must be used, however the whole entry does not have to be written in Aboriginal Language. Translation is requested for all language entries. 21.01.2022 Wonnarua Elders Council Elder Uncle Richard Edwards will officially launch the Wanarruwa Beginner’s Guide written by Wonnarua Elder Sharon-Edgar Jones and Albert Burgman with assistance from Jim Wafer. This project has been administered by Muurrbay Aboriginal Language & Culture Co-operative with funding from the Australian Government’s Indigenous Languages and Arts program through the Department of Communications and the Arts Support Program and the NSW Government through Abo...riginal Affairs NSW. The Wanarruwa Beginner’s Guide has grown out of the community’s efforts to revive their language, a language of the NSW Hunter River area, and has been supported in all stages of its development by the Wonnarua Elders Council. Each year more and more people are relearning the Wanarruwa language. The Wanarruwa Beginner’s Guide is a step-by-step guide to understanding Wanarruwa beginning with the absolute essentials and steadily building up knowledge of how the pieces of the language work together. This step-by-step language learning format lends itself to being used as a basis for sequenced language teaching, and, indeed, it is hoped that this will be the case. This guide should form the basis of any Wanarruwa language learning and teaching. The ten to fifteen minute films cover three areas:... Film 1: Working with speakers to record natural speech Film 2: Transcribing for language workers Film 3: Parts of speech for language workers Each film includes theory, demonstrations and quizzes; and is accompanied by worksheets to support the learning.
