09.01.2022 First Nations and The Federation pay tribute to Dr. Bonita Mabo AO: Educator, advocate, mother, activist, fighter and wife. First Nations Legal & Research Services and the Federation of Victorian Traditional Owner Corporations would like to pay tribute to the life of Bonita Mabo and acknowledge her relentless advocacy for a reconciled and equal Australia. ... Because of Her We Can. As two organisations dedicated to land justice, reconciliation and strength and recognition of First People, First Nations and The Federation acknowledge the passion, dedication and stoicism of one of our great leaders. The legacy of Bonita and Eddie’s work continues today with recognition in Victoria under the Native Title and Traditional Owner Settlement Acts, and soon through the Victorian Treaty process. We note Bonita’s passing with sadness and express our deep gratitude to this great pioneer. Tony Kelly, CEO First Nations Legal and Research Services Bonita Mabo tirelessly supported her husband Eddie Koiki Mabo during his protracted land rights battle over Mer Island in the Torres Strait. Their decade long struggle eventually overturned the lie of Terra Nullius in 1992 and paved the way for land justice in Australia through the Native Title Act (1993). Since his untimely death 6 months before the historic Mabo decision, Bonita has continued her commitment to change the status quo and shine a light into dark places of our nations’ history. We pay our respects and acknowledge the legacy of a social justice warrior who fought, not only on behalf of Torres Strait and South Sea islanders, but for all First Nations people in Australia. 09.01.2022 First Nations Legal and Research Services and Right People for Country are working together to engage with Traditional Owners of Far East Gippsland. In order for First Nations Legal and Research Services to plan into the future, we need to first know what the people of Far East Gippsland want in relation to Country, and how they want to get there. To that end, we invite all people who feel they have traditional rights and interests in the area to a meeting to be held in O...rbost on the 5th August 2018. The people who come to the meeting will set the agenda, so this is your chance to have your say in a productive, respectful and Traditional Owner led forum. You tell us if you want to move forward in relation to Country, and if so, what you want from that process. First Nations and Right People for Country will be at the meeting to help with the process. Please feel free to contact Di O’Rorke, our Senior Anthropologist who is working on this project with Sally and Lucy from Right People for Country to RSVP and have a chat about it all. The meeting is fully funded so all queries about transport and accommodation expenses please contact either Lucy or Dylan from Right People for Country. 04.01.2022 FIRST PEOPLE OF THE MILLEWA-MALLEE WELCOME REGISTERED ABORIGINAL PARTY APPOINTMENT THEIR FULL MEDIA STATEMENT BELOW: First People of the Millewa-Mallee Aboriginal Corporation (FPMMAC) are Latji Latji, Nyeri Nyeri and Ngintait (Nintay) Traditional Owners of Country in the north west of Victoria that runs south of the Murray River to the Mallee Highway, and west from the Calder Highway to the South Australian border, including the Murray-Sunset National Park. We have come toget...her as to represent our rights and interests over the lands and waters of this beautiful Country. Country our ancestors managed for millennia with great care until colonisation. After a long journey, we welcome the significant recognition of our corporation through the Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council’s decision to appoint Zone 1 of our Registered Aboriginal Party (RAP) application. I speak on behalf of the board and all our members when I say it’s fantastic to get this news before Christmas. First Peoples of the Millewa-Mallee have been waiting for a long time to take this important step on the journey to recognition and this decision is the result of hard work, resilience, dedication and patience of our people. We’ve got plans for our Country, and now we can start to really get on with it. Uncle Norm Wilson, First People of the Millewa-Mallee Elder and FPMMAC deputy chair. We know where our sacred sites are. We know where our ancestors made canoes, where they sang and where they danced. And we know where they are buried. Now we have the right and responsibility to work with local and state governments and other bodies and agencies to ensure that our culture and heritage are recognised and respected, and that our voices are heard and elevated. First Nations are very proud of what the First Peoples of the Millewa-Mallee have achieved with this important cultural heritage recognition. They’ve worked hard and deserve this appointment. We’re confident they will build on this and that formal recognition as Traditional Owners by the Victorian Government will follow in the New Year. Tony Kelly, CEO First Nations Legal and Research Services. We would like to thank all our people who have worked so hard and waited patiently for this decision and to the staff at First Nations Legal and Research Services for their research and support to make this possible.
