We do it out of habit. We do it out of guilt. We do it out of laziness or we do it out of greedy ambition. And then we wonder why ...our performance suffers. We wonder our heart isn’t really in it. Of course it isn’t. We know deep down there’s no point. But if we could do less non-essential stuff, we’d be able to better do what is essential. 16.01.2022 Conditioning is more than just getting fit! I read a book many years ago called Teaching the Elephant to Dance by James Belasco. The book uses the example of circus trainers who, in the past, would shackle young elephants with heavy chains to deeply embedded stakes to ensure they stayed put! Once fully grown, the elephants never tried to leave even though, now, they had the strength to easily pull the stakes and move beyond. Why? Because their earlier conditioning had been s...o powerful that even when their chains were fully removed, their behaviour remained unchanged. It’s the answer to why we do so many things the way we do because we’ve always done them that way! Yet, if the circus tent was to catch fire, the elephant would soon forget its earlier conditioning and would bolt. Hopefully, we’re not waiting for our "circus tents" to catch fire before we check the bonds that hold us to where we are today. We might find they’re not connected to anything!
