16.01.2022 Introducing Assembly Member for the Metropolitan Region, Aunty Esme Bamblett a proud Bangerang, Wiradjuri and Taungurung woman. Aunty Esme has been involved in the fight for the rights of Aboriginal people for over 40 years and has much experience and knowledge to contribute to establishing a Treaty process. As an Assembly Member, Aunty Esme believes in Treaties and that it’s time for us to have them. She recognises our leaders who fought for our rights to Treaty and brough...t us to where we are today with an historic opportunity to set out a process for Treaties for our communities. Speaking on her biggest influences in life, Aunty Esme says it’s God and her family. Growing up I learnt the importance of family and community and looking after each other from my mother and grandparents. As a young woman, my aunt, Dr. Mary Atkinson contributed to my leadership skills by mentoring me and strengthening my faith. My uncle, Dr. Alf Bamblett was very influential in the development of my vision for a strong and united Aboriginal community. My children and grandchildren teach me to treasure the little moments that make a difference. https://www.firstpeoplesvic.org/metropo/esmerelda-bamblett/

15.01.2022 Introducing Assembly Member for the South West, Sissy Austin a proud Gunditjmara Keerraay Woorroong DjabWurrung woman. Sissy brings a grassroots spirit and way of doing business in all that she does. She has a deep love and care for our young people and community, which is reflected in her work as a Paralegal Support Worker at Djirra, her involvement in community campaigns such as the Protection of DjabWurrung Country, and her experience as a kinship carer over the past 6 y...ears. As an Assembly Member, Sissy hopes to achieve outcomes that reflect the needs of community, including a truth telling process to begin true healing and true self-determination for our clan groups across the state. She hopes that by being a young person on the Assembly, other young people will follow in the Treaty journey and stand for the Assembly themselves when the time comes. One of the reasons I stood was because I felt there needed to be young mob represented on the Assembly, I believe we bring a unique insight and unique ways of working and engaging that can be woven throughout all elements of treaty business. I hope that the Assembly is the vehicle for oppressive structures, processes and decision making bodies to be dismantled and re-built in a way that enacts self-determination for Aboriginal communities in this state, this is the only way forward for our country, land and people. www.firstpeoplesvic.org/south-west/sissy-austin

04.01.2022 The First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria is devastated at the passing of an Aboriginal man in Port Phillip Prison. This is a national disgrace and is another unnecessary death in a year that has already seen too many Aboriginal people die in custody. We acknowledge that across Australia seven Aboriginal people have lost their lives in custody since March. That is seven too many.... It is clear the Corrections System has a callous disregard for Aboriginal life. Here in Victoria, the Yoo-rrook Justice Commission will examine the systems and structures that have led to tragedies like this and provide a fair and just way forward. However, more needs to be done. We need urgent action now, so no other Aboriginal lives are needlessly lost. First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria Co-Chairs, Geraldine Atkinson and Marcus Stewart
