24.01.2022 I saw something like these the other day somewhere on the internet and I thought what a great idea! Especially for the hobby farm such as ours, and, considering we just love chickens. So here is my first attempt at making chicken earrings.

22.01.2022 Have I ever told you what I love best about our little hobby farm? Well just in case you didn't know! Here is the final count for this batch, 4.

20.01.2022 Wishing everyone a safe and happy Easter Wishing everyone a safe and happy Easter

19.01.2022 Hi there, just wanted to write a brief post to wish you all well through this horrible crisis. I hope you are all well and safe. It's a shame that is takes a virus such as Covid-19 to show us the importance of being as sustainable as we can. I know a lot of people are starting to get into their gardens more during these times. Go for it, as our gardening gurus such as Tino Carnevale and Costa Georgiadis as well as others encourage us to do, for our own health and well being ...and to put fresh food on our tables. If going out into your own back yard isn't something that we can do, just by buying locally and supporting local industry is more important than ever in our recent history. There are many local farmers that we can support through the local Harvest Market who can deliver or maybe we can collect directly from the farmers gate. Although I have only a small hobby farm, I feel blessed that my son and I have been able to produce some beautiful food for our table. We are lucky to have such a beautiful range of chickens but we are inundated with roosters at the moment, and I don't have the heart to add them to our dining table and so I just have to keep the boys in separate living quarters.

16.01.2022 As discussed below :)

16.01.2022 Ok, I know it's been a long time since I posted about the shelter belt that I was building back in late 2019. But today I found the time and a great opportunity to avoid house work. Here is the handy work I attempted at tying off the wire to the support post. It's a bit hard to see but the wire has to twist once back over itself to secure the wire and so that it doesn't slip. If I can do this, so can you. Sometimes its just a matter of using a good tool. Take that anyway you like!

15.01.2022 Unfortunately there will always be accidents when you own animals! Before and after shots, and that's only after 2 days. My sincere thanks goes to Bess, Peter and staff at the Longford Vet Clinic.

14.01.2022 Shelter belt 2 November 2019 After digging the holes (60cm) for the posts and cementing them in place, I prepared the end assemblies. This was achieved by putting some 4x2 timber into the ground at 90 to the assemblies. Originally, I placed the assembly supports directly into the ground, but after speaking to some farmy people I decided to open up the holes again and cement them in place. This would reduce even further the possibility of and movement once the wires are strained (tightened). Stay tuned for part 3.

14.01.2022 Shelter belt 1 starting October 2019 With the help of my friend Phil (and a few goats) the building of a shelter belt began in October 2019. This shelter belt will provide shelter (obviously) from wind from the South West of the hobby farm. It will also protect growth of pasture and trees in the paddock on the farm side of the shelter belt. ... The existing trees adjacent to the boundary fence have been struggling and some large eucalyptus trees have died due to extremities of climatic conditions such as excessive heat and reduced rainfall we have been experiencing in recent years. Trunks and lower limbs of some of the trees can be seen in the second photo behind the kids. I know you may be thinking that there is a nice group (stand) of trees there, which should provide enough protection for them! However, a small stand of trees can suffer from edge effects, meaning the trees on the outer edge of the stand will often die, due to reduced protection on the edge of the stand. I am hoping that this shelter belt will provide a little bit of added protection for the trees and reduce the dust blown on to the property from the adjacent gravel road. Last year I applied for a grant to put up some shelter belts on my property to protection and encourage growth of pasture and animals, but unfortunately was unsuccessful. However, given the incentive, having already drafted my plan and having some leftover fencing materials I decided to start one of the shelter belts myself.

13.01.2022 My next achievement was to install a gate for obvious reasons. That was fun! I dug the hole with my hand hole drill about 80 cm into the ground. I cemented it in place just to be sure it would hold. I think I should have probably but in the extra support of a stay but I thought that it wouldn't need it because I hadn't strained it very tightly. In fact I still haven't strained the top two wires yet.

10.01.2022 I am thankful for the good food that just seems to keep on growing on our little hobby farm. It's a pitty that Riley only likes the sweet corn! However, he loves the blackberry jam I made from our garden full of wild blackberries. I just love those mushies! Yummo!

02.01.2022 Riley has been doing well developing his skills and becoming quite a chick magnet!

02.01.2022 The thing I love most about having animals on the farm!

01.01.2022 A cold brisk morning as the sun was rising with the partially iced over dam and our beautiful goats.
