25.01.2022 FISH celebrates the many amazing and talented Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Boards around Australia doing such important work for their communities. The ALPA Board in East Arnhem Land is one of many and this week they met for the last time this year to discuss their vision and strategic plan. The Board took the time to thank everyone one of their community members and supporters throughout what can only be described as a challenging and odd year for businesses ...globally due to COVID-19. They noted how very proud they were of their teams adaptability and ingenuity to be able to continue to operate businesses and activities throughout a very tough year. The ALPA Board wanted to wish everyone the best and especially their supporters. May 2021 be a less challenging year for the many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Boards and we pause to congratulate you all for your great efforts during this once in a life time year that is/was 2020 ! #byaboriginalpeopleforaboriginalpeople #leadership

25.01.2022 FISH believes that appropriate education is critical for everyone as it creates choices and opportunities. Education leads to work which in turn generates income which again provides people with choices and opportunities. When you look at the 2020 Prime Minister’s Report in Closing the Gap it is evident that, while progress has been made, we have not reached the target to close the gap in school attendance, halve the gap in reading and numeracy and to halve the gap in employm...ent for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We have a long way to go and this is why part of FISH's work focusses on skilling educational staff and providing educational resources to create educational opportunities that appropriately engages with all students to inspire a life long passion for learning. This is done through the FISH Professional Development Program and creation of educational resources. Check out the FISH Online Shop https://shop.fish.asn.au/collections/education-resources Let's listen to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and ensure that our educational institutions are appropriate places of education for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to create future life choices and opportunities ! #togetherwecan #togetherwearestronger #shouldertoshoulder

22.01.2022 Great to see the Australian Institute of Company Directors feature FISH Director Liza McGuire and our Ambasador Barry McGuire on a recent post featuring the great work they are doing with their company Redspear: "Husband and wife duo Barry and Liza McGuire lead Redspear Safety, the first Indigenous-owned company in the engineering safety sector. Redspear was born out of a mining tragedy in Western Australia. "I was flying to a mine site one morning where we encountered a fata...lity," says Barry, a Balladong, Wadjuk, Noongar man. "I was so disturbed that this young fellow had passed and wondered why he wasn't harnessed while working at height." The McGuires teamed up with Francois Witbooi, who became Redspear's general manager in 2015. "Redspear Safety is creating a legacy for future generations," says Liza, a Bidjara, Ghangulu and Iman woman. "We're building something for our children to take over one day and be proud of. "It's about collaborating and building a stronger Aboriginal business sector." #NAIDOC2020 #alwayswasalwayswillbe #shouldertoshoulder

21.01.2022 FISH congratulates Kamilaroi man Dennis Golding for being awarded the $30,000 Fellowship by Artspace Sydney and Create NSW for his work Cast in cast out, an installation of work Golding plans to develop with the Fellowship funding. This is the first time in its 100-year history the NSW Visual Arts Emerging Fellowship has been awarded to a First Nations artist. I’m really excited about where it is leading to next and how I can use the Fellowship to really expand the project,... he said. Being the first Indigenous recipient of the award, Golding felt both humbled and confused. I guess I had that question of why weren’t there any before me? There’s been 100 years of this award being shared in NSW but this is a huge achievement for me, and it extends to family, community and to the broader Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Sector, he said. I hope it can lead into more opportunities where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people can be represented in these positions in contemporary arts. 16.01.2022 After four years of work, co-designing with 36 young Indigenous men who are incarcerated, 26 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders and community leaders from around Australia, both with the program design and site layout for the 11 hectare site, we are now at the final stages with the West Australian Government's State Development Assessment Unit for Planning Approval for the whole site. The last 3 months has seen very intensive work with the final refinement of the la...yout for the whole site and drawings for each specific element as the FISH team and our partners work hard to finalise planning approval by the end of May 2021. We are pleased to present the latest animated flyover of the proposed development. The FISH Myalup Karla Waangkiny Justice Initiative is a national proto-type to give Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people a place to heal and receive holistic support to break intergenerational cycles of trauma, avoid (re-) engagement in the justice system and contribute positively to society. The whole initiative has been designed 'by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people'. #codesign #justiceinitiative #breakingintergenerationalcycles #justicereinvestment #togetherwecan #bythepeopleforthepeople #empowerment #togetherwearestronger #shouldertoshoulder #healing #pathforward

"Thank you to FISH for their support of me being part of this transformational program as part of my personal development. Being a part of the WAALI sisters where we were able to inspire each other and to hear from and be mentored by our strong women Elders has given me an immeasurable amount of value," commented Kaisha. FISH CEO Mark Anderson stated "We want to continue to provide leadership opportunities for our FISH team and inspire them to be the leaders of today and tomorrow to bring lasting positive change."

10.01.2022 For the last 3 years and especially in the last six months, FISH has been guided by our Elders, Aboriginal leaders and young people through a co-design process to develop the FISH Myalup Karla Waanginy Justice Initiative, inclusive of the program design and design and layout of the 11 hectare site at Myalup in the South West of Western Australia as a national prototype. FISH were instructed not to have any discussions with government departments and agencies until the work of... the co-design group had been completed. With over 20 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people involved from across Australia we are excited about the next stage of the implementation of the initiative. The Myalup Karla Waanginy Justice Initiative will give Aboriginal people a place to heal and receive holistic support to break intergenerational cycles of trauma, avoid (re-)engagement in the justice system and contribute positively to society. This is initiative is 'by Aboriginal people for Aboriginal people' as we know the current system has not and does not work. We have now moved to the next stage in the process and started work with over eight governmental agencies, local government etc as we move through the planning approval process. The FISH team have now met with the full Harvey Shire Council and Officers and yesterday attended a meeting in the South West of Western Australia with representatives from the State Development Assessment Unit, Main Roads and Shire CEO and Officers to work through planning matters for the site. #TogetherWeCan #justicereinvestment #healingtobringchange #culturetobringhealing #bythepeople #byAboriginalpeopleforAboriginalpeople

09.01.2022 This week’s poem by Justin Geange is called ‘Keep Getting Back Up’ This message is a shout out from the FISH team to keep on turning up and fight hard for every point. Some of us have battles that require mates to help us back up, a helping hand to help us stand up and fill that empty cup. Our hope right now is to pump you up, keep inching forward with all you got, step by step you will get there. Most of us have fallen at some stage over the years, but we’re stoked you’re st...ill here right now, means you got back up through all the tears. Courage is more important than success, don’t judge each other by successes but by getting back up instead ! Part of FISH's focus and mission is the social and emotional wellbeing of people and to keep your spirit and other’s strong. FISH uses the creative space to bring messages of hope, reflection and levers for positive change as we all walk shoulder to shoulder softly upon this land working together to make it a better place for all. FISH are honoured to partner with Justin Geange a Maori man who is just an average bloke from Logan Queensland. Justin is a devoted husband and father of two beautiful daughters, he is a plumber by trade but works for suicide prevention charity Mates in Construction. Supporting people in crisis is a passion of his stemming from his own personal battle with mental illness and suicidality. Justin has found writing poetry helps with his own well-being and hopes his transparency may encourage or even help others experiencing similar challenges. May each of us this week keep getting back up, give a helping hand to those around to pump each other up as we keep inching forward with we’ve got, step by step to create a better place in this world. #poetryforchange #perspective #wellbeing #keepgettingbackup #resilience #pumpeachotherup #shouldertoshoulder #togetherwecan #togetherwearestronger

08.01.2022 Why not take the time increase your knowledge on issues relevant to this country's history and read some great Indigenous books. Accomplished author Bruce Pascoe provides compelling evidence from the diaries of early explorers that suggests that systems of food production and land management have been blatantly understated in modern retellings of early Aboriginal history, and that a new look at Australia's past is required. Dark Emu argues for a reconsideration of the 'hunte...r-gatherer' tag for pre-colonial Aboriginal Australians and attempts to rebut the colonial myths that have worked to justify dispossession Dark Emu is winner of the 2016 Indigenous Writer's Prize in the NSW Premier's Literary Awards; 2016 Book of the Year in the NSW Premier's Literary Awards; 2014 History Book Award in the Queensland Literary Awards; and 2014 Victorian Premier's Award for Indigenous Writing Buy through FISH’s online shop https://shop.fish.asn.au/collections/books/products/dark-emu From the success of Dark Emu Bruce Pascoe has brought together the research and compelling first person accounts in a book for younger readers. Young Dark Emu - A Truer History asks young readers to consider a different version of Australia's history pre-European colonisation. He allows the reader to see Australia as it was before Europeans arrived a land of cultivated farming areas, productive fisheries, permanent homes, and an understanding of the environment and its natural resources that supported thriving villages across the continent. You can buy through FISH’s online shop https://shop.fish.asn.au/collecti//products/young-dark-emu or check out the many other books and items for great Christmas gifts for this year. #TrueHistory #educateyourself

02.01.2022 FISH celebrate that for the seventh year running, international engineering, design and advisory firm, Aurecon, is continuing its partnership with the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) to help close the employment gap by developing future Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander engineering leaders. Aurecon supports the Engineering and IT stream of the Galuwa Experience and funds an Indigenous engineering scholarship. The Galuwa Experience introduces senior high school stud...ents to undergraduate programs at UTS and connects them with industry mentors and role models. Aurecon’s Diversity & Inclusion Manager Australia & New Zealand, Penny Rush, emphasised the importance of building a pipeline of future Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders. Australia needs to ensure our engineers of the future reflect our community and include the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, who have been caretakers of this land for tens of thousands of years. These are the young people who will become business and community leaders and role models for younger generations," Ms Rush said. In 1997, Mark Henaway, Associate at Aurecon, was the first person of Indigenous heritage in Australia to graduate with an electrical engineering degree, from Queensland University of Technology. Today, Mark is giving back to the profession by offering his time to the Galuwa Experience. In a live Q&A panel, he reflected on his career journey, hoping to inspire the next generation of Indigenous engineering leaders. "This is a fantastic partnership that Aurecon is involved in. Higher education has given me the opportunity to explore the future of transport, challenge my belief system, and encourage others to aspire to engineering as a career, Mr Henaway said. It is my pleasure to pay it forward and help pave the path for engineering opportunities for Indigenous students by sharing my experience.
