25.01.2022 This Saturdays scheduled west coast Roes abalone fishing day is set to go ahead with more than 17,000 fishers keen to get out there and have a crack at the fa...ntastic Roes abalone fishery we have on our doorstep. Fishing for abalone one of the great hands-on fishing experiences available in WA and we hope everyone has a great time catching these tasty molluscs. But we also urge everyone to stay safe whilst fishing by being aware of the weather conditions and wearing the right gear so make sure you plan ahead by visiting mybeach.com.au/coastal-recreation/abalone/.

25.01.2022 Today our new PFDs ( Personal floatation device) arrive from Recfishwest. Since early 2016 we have been wearing them after we had some close calls of our own.... Aron nearly drowned and was very lucky to get out alive with the help of a good friend and a few months later I had a close call where a wave nearly washed me off the rocks in a place that if I had of gone in I wouldnt have ever came out of alive. Since that we bought our own PFDs and then in time recfishwest have supplied us with the crew saver ones which we find comfiest and dont even know we have on to try and spread the message of rock fishing safety. Our PFDs arent just worn for photos or when people are around, they are an essential part of our fishing pack just like rods and reels are. If we are on the rocks we are wearing them, simple as that. One day they just may save our lives and sitting next to our gear or in the car is no good when it should of being worn. We use the manual inflation types with the idea being that if we do go in we can swim away from the rock edge then inflate them to either wait for help to arrive or buy ourselves time to decide on a plan to get out of the situation we are in. Since our close calls we also spent a lot of time trying to understand what creates king waves and from our experience any changes to swell size, swell direction and swell period ( the time between each wave) are the most dangerous as waves bounce of each other and the rocky headlands in unpredictable ways or cause one off freak waves you simply cant plan for. Any days where we have any changes to swell like its direction or size increasing or long swell periods (over 16 seconds) we stay clear of spots that face into the swell as thats likely to create a freak wave that may put our lives at risk. Another simple rule we go by is, if its to rough to land a good fish its not worth fishing. If you have to get onto black rocks or time waves to land a good fish its just not worth it. Sorry for the long post everyone. Just trying to do our bit to help make the sport we love as safe as it can be and we really dont want to see any more news reports of anglers loosing their lives. Thanks for all the support.

24.01.2022 A win here for those fishing in remote regions within WA with the announcement of 63 new phone towers to be bulilt in blackspot WA areas for phone coverage. Rec...fishwest is a keen advocate for better phone coverage to ensure any fishers who find themselves in strife can put out a call for help. Some of the areas to be covered by the new masts include Steep Point, the Abrolhos Islands, Cape Arid, Peron NP, Ningaloo, Exmouth Gulf, Port Smith, Stokes, Donnelly River huts, Thevanard and Cararang. 23.01.2022 DON'T GO FISHING Recreational fishers have been told to keep their fishing gear in storage during the COVID-19 crisis. In what is normally peak salmon fis...hing season on the south coast, the State Government has urged people to refrain from recreational fishing. A spokesman for Fisheries Minister Peter Tinley confirmed recreational fishing was not seen as an essential reason to leave the house. He said people should follow four simple guidelines, only leaving the house for essential shopping, medical and health needs, exercise and work or study. We urge all Western Australians to practise common sense and cease non-essential activity, the spokesman said. Where possible, we encourage recreational fishers to stay home for now.

21.01.2022 A strategy to help ensure WAs recreational fishers return home safe to their families after a day out fishing has been announced, with $560,000 allocated by th...e State Government to the Recreational Fishing Initiatives Fund. The funding will support Recfishwest to continue to deliver its Fishing Safety Strategy for the next four years, which focuses on making rock fishing, salmon, abalone, rock lobster and spear fishing safer. The strategy includes 75 angel rings, more than 100 rock anchor points and 1,000 safety signs installed at high risk locations around WA, plus the expansion of a free loan lifejacket program across 23 locations between Quobba and Esperance. 20.01.2022 A flare sighting was reported this afternoon on the western side of Garden Island near Collins Point. A nearby helicopter was diverted and confirmed a small cap...sized vessel. Marine Safety WA vessel PV1, Avail and Rover 2 were tasked to the scene. Three persons were taken onboard PV1 and returned to Point Peron. Given it's location and swell conditions the small boat will be salvaged at a later stage.

20.01.2022 We just love seeing our safe fishing ambassadors out on the water, enjoying what they love, while returning home safe! The extra bonus is they caught some fish too! #fishandsurvive

20.01.2022 Angel rings and lifejackets to the rescue! A police officer using an angel ring (life buoy) came to the rescue of a man in strife who had fallen off the rocks ...at Sugarloaf Rock in WAs South West over the weekend. Thankfully, the man, was wearing a lifejacket it could have been a very different outcome had he not been. A police officer guided by a drone being flown by an onlooker was able to use the angel ring to get to the man and pull him free of the water. The South West coast can be very unforgiving and with fishing firmly back on the agenda for travelling families, tourists and local communities in our regions make sure you clue yourself up and kit yourself out to come home safe after a days fishing. We look forward to working with local fishing communities as part of our State-wide Safe Fishing Program to install more angel rings and rock anchor points across WAs coastline. A map of already-installed angels rings is available here: https://bit.ly/2zcd7K3 and also includes where you can pick up loan life jackets before heading out fishing.

20.01.2022 Concerning news coming from NSW regarding a missing rock fisher.

19.01.2022 Its silly salmon season down here in the south please dont risk your life for a fish. If youre fishing from rocks remember to tie off and wear a life jacket ...because accidents do happen. Dont put our volunteer rescue people in harms way just because you thought you could chase a salmon off a rock. They go harder off the sandy beaches anyway!!! Please be safe and thankyou for considering others Fishgirl

19.01.2022 Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who drowned near Contos Beach earlier today. We urge everyone who chooses to fish at this time to please check swell and weather conditions before fishing and stay safe. 18.01.2022 At this time of year, metro land-based fishing is a popular activity for recfishers targeting pinkies off the stones as they move in on the rock walls looking for an easy feed. With the seven-day wind and wave forecast for Perth predicting very high swell and strong winds, we urge all fishers to take care if choosing to fish during this time. Make sure you check the weather, tell someone where youre going, and when youll be back. Dont fish alone and check the swell bef...ore fishing, wear the right clothing and equipment including a lifejacket if fishing from the rocks. Fishing from rock platforms in high swell comes with inherent risk and we strongly recommend you find alternative beach locations to fish from instead if youre not an experienced rock fisher. 13.01.2022 The importance of up to date safety equipment was dramatically highlighted for four boaters whose vessel capsized as the result of a surprise big wave off the coast of Quobba, north of Carnarvon. The lucky escapees, survived what could have been a fatal incident, by grabbing their water proof emergency bag which contained an EPIRB and mobile phone after it floated to the surface, enabling them to notify emergency services. All four people on board had also opted to wear self-...inflating lifejackets while boating in the area. This near-miss shows how having the proper in-date safe fishing gear on your boat can quite simply save your life. Make sure your boat is fully equipped with in-date safety gear before you next head out. Western Angler magazine Fishing Around Western Australia #fishandsurvive

12.01.2022 As a dive buddy, its your responsibility to know what to do in the event of your dive mate experiencing a black-out. Whether youre new to diving, or a world champ spearo, black-outs can happen to anybody at any depth. Everybody makes mistakes, and all it takes is a solid fish to come into sight as you're nearing the end of your dive, or spotting that jumbo in the corner of the ledge, right before you were going to surface to push yourself just that bit too far. You can he...lp bring everyone home safe by tagging your spearfishing/diving mates in and sharing this video so they know what to do should something go seriously wrong. This video produced by the Australia Underwater Federation was made with the assistance of a Recfishwest Community Grant if youve got an idea that could help improve recreational fishing safety in your area like this one, you could apply for funding for up to $8,000 through the Recfishwest Community Grants Program - more info here: https://bit.ly/2OsVXx3

11.01.2022 Well done to our partners in NSW for their work on installing more than 100 Angel Rings in known rock fishing spots along the coast to help bring fishers home safe. We're always looking for new locations across the state of WA to expand our Angel Ring program so if you know of a rock fishing spot which could do with an Angel Ring, let us know by emailing [email protected]. 09.01.2022 TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR SAFETY WHEN FISHING A string of recent incidents involving recfishers getting into strife has highlighted the importance of good ...preparation and awareness of conditions before wetting a line during the winter months. Whether fishing from rocks or in the boat, there are many inherent risks when fishing in poor weather conditions and high swell along WA's coast so dont put your life on the line. From angel rings to providing free loan lifejackets to improve fishers safety, Recfishwest tirelessly promotes the need for safety to be part of every fishing experience through the State-wide Safe Fishing Strategy. We want everyone to come home safe after a days fishing. Recfishwest Safe Fishing Officer Alanna Ellison is urging recfishers to make safe fishing a priority, particularly in the winter months. 09.01.2022 The Snag it, Tag it program is just one initiative to help bring fishers home safe. If youre out and about fishing and accidentally snag up to a cray pot and have to cut your line, let others know by placing the tag on the cray pot line. Bringing a cray pot in on a winch at high speed with a hook and sinker attached has in the past resulted in incidents. Pick them up from local tackle stores or at the Recfishwest office.
