25.01.2022 One of these species of Kelp is not meant to be here... Can you guess which one? Put your answers in the comments and we will reveal the answer at the end of th...e day! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The answer is..... The Kelp on the left, Japanese Kelp! Take a look at the base of the Japanese Kelp... its ruffled! These folds can help us distinguish that this is an introduced species and must be reported to 136 186. The introduced Japanese Kelp also has very smooth blades (leaves), unlike the Native Common Kelp whose blades are wrinkled. For more information on Native and Introduced species in Port Phillip Bay, you can sign up for our Online Classroom "Invading the Bay" here https://fishcare.org.au/online-zoom-sessions/

24.01.2022 Cod Season Opens up on December 1st which is really exciting! Just be sure to know your Victorian Rules and Practices before heading our for a fish as hefty fines can apply to Anglers doing the wrong thing. Remember the Minimum legal length for Murray cod is 55cm with a max of 75cm to ensure smaller fish get a chance to breed and larger fish sustain the population. ... The statewide bag limit for the Murray cod is 1 from Rivers and 2 from Urban or specified Lakes and impoundments. Tight lines.

21.01.2022 Ever think youd see a 1.5m flathead? Our Marine and Freshwater Discovery Centre (MFDC) will have one on show when it opens for the winter holiday program this ...week. Given the facility can only cater for limited numbers in line with recommendations from the Chief Health Officer, things will look a bit different at the Queenscliff centre. The 2020 Winter Holiday Program inside the MFDC will focus on indigenous fishing as we welcome Tjorriong, our new Southern Rock Lobster. Tjorriong is the Wadda Wurrung word for rock lobster. One notable addition will be a 1.5m cardboard cutout flathead. This is a rare chance to see such a creature in its natural habitat, cruising around the facility to ensure the appropriate spacing between families is being maintained. Visitors to the centre must book prior to arrival and there will be 5 sessions of 50 minutes each day, allowing staff to sanitise surfaces between groups. To book, call (03) 5258 4433 or email [email protected] with your details and the MFDC team will call you back. 21.01.2022 Fishcare Geelong & Bellarine is looking to conduct its first installment of the All Abilities program this January alongside our highly successful and anticipated Come and Try Fishing Clinics. These events look to gain exposure for fishing as an activity and recreation in the Geelong and Bellarine area for those with mixed abilities. Pending the success of theses events we will be looking to add more events to our calander and expand the program within our region. If you or someone you know may be interested in the activities please contact our facilitator Mitch McMaster via email at [email protected] or on 0448546703

20.01.2022 It might not seem super important but making good casts can be the difference between catching fish and not. This is especially the case when using lures, fishing around structure or sight casting fish. Today Fishcare GB Facilitator @mitchell_mcm is down at the Kids Adventure Outdoor event in Anglesea next to the bowling club running casting lanes. He has a few tricks up his sleeve to make the cast you need to catch a fish. . .... . #fishcarevictoria #wefishwecare #casting #castingpractice See more

17.01.2022 It is the season for salmon fishing. Fishcare GB is wondering who would be interested in braving the elements and do some beach fishing? Due to the time of year and it being rather fickle to get the right conditions for fishing off our beaches we are thinking of proposing a few weekends in the hope that we can get at least one of them with the right weather. The other problem is gear. We dont have the resources to purchase new surf fishing equipment at the moment so it would... be a bring your own surf rods event due to this event being a trial. We would still be providing bait and terminal tackle for the event and maybe a BBQ before or after the event as well. We still have a few logistical problems to look into but you are interested in the idea please fill out our poll. If you have any other interests or ideas of events please add a comment below as well.

17.01.2022 Fishcare is talking knots and fishing at the Portarlington fish festival today. Come down and enjoy the event. Casting demonstrations, food and arts. Of course fishing as well.

17.01.2022 Hi Everyone, Due to the current situation facing us with the Covid 19 virus, Fishcare is unfortunately canceling all activities for the time being. We aim to recommence activities as soon as possible and we are sorry for any inconveniences. HOWEVER, we are going to be working behind the scenes on a number of projects and be back bigger and better for the back half of 2020. We would love to know what you would like from Fishcare in the future. Would you be interested in loca...l fishing reports, an adult angler education for parents, advanced angler programs focusing on species specific tactics including lure and fly fishing options, perhaps as simple as a local fishing map? Let us know here in the comments or email me at [email protected]

16.01.2022 It's National Recycling week... a time to reduce, reuse and recycle Take 3 is an initiative encouraging cleaner, healthier waterways by taking three pieces of rubbish out of the environment when visiting! Check out their site here ... https://www.take3.org/

16.01.2022 Geelongs Rippleside Jetty is now much safer thanks to your recreational fishing licence fees. More than $16,000 has been used by City of Greater Geelong for im...provements including better seating, decking and access ladders. The changes will make it easier for fishers without boats to target King George whiting, silver trevally, salmon and snapper. Located within Rippleside Park in Geelong, the jetty provides convenient access to Corio Bay, which is now net free. #yourfishinglicencefeesatwork #fishingVictoria #target1million

15.01.2022 Upgrades on a trio of jetties at beautiful Barwon Heads are done and dusted! Weve spruced up the jetties near the mouth of the Barwon River to be safer and m...ore user-friendly, helped by the crew from Parks Victoria. New decking, hand rails and rod holders have been included in the upgrades, which were funded by Target One Million. A handful of other jetties are getting upgrades too. Stay tuned! #target1million #barwonheads

14.01.2022 With a State of Emergency issued for Victoria this morning and considering health advice in regards to the Covid-19 virus, Fishcare Victoria have decided to saf...eguard our volunteers, staff and the community by postponing all events and clinics that were scheduled between now and Easter Monday. Please be advised that this decision will be under constant review and all future decisions will be made by the Fishcare Victoria Committee with the aid of government health advice. We appreciate your understanding.

10.01.2022 Fishcare Victoria is undergoing its re-branding. Look out for this logo as we go forward. Also, the Geelong & Bellarine group is also looking at adding a few more things to its education and events list. What would you like to see Fishcare doing? What do you like and not like about our current program? We are constantly striving to improve on what we do and deliver. Please leave a comment or DM with any ideas. Video content, fishing reports, competitions, more community events, species specific tactic nights?

10.01.2022 Whats the key to effective fisheries science and management? Believe it or not, its contained within the ear bones of fish otoliths! Otoliths are essenti...ally aeroplane flight recorders that capture information used by fisheries scientists worldwide. How do we get this information from ear-bones? By counting each growth ring (as shown on the two pictured), we can estimate the age of the fish! When thousands of otoliths from a population are aged, scientists can measure growth rates, life span and movement, which helps us manage your fisheries! Up for a challenge? These otoliths come from two different fish of the same species can you estimate their ages? Bonus points for guessing the species! Clue theyre an inland favourite. #scienceweek #fisheriesscience

10.01.2022 Come down to BCF Waurn Ponds and celebrate the Women in Recreational Event (WIRF) with presentations from Fisheries, ourselves and learn a thing or two. Also enjoy a great spread of finger foods!

10.01.2022 Did you know that Australias Southern Coastline has been isolated for some 65 million years and as a result is species rich and super diverse!? In fact, many o...f the species in this region are endemic (meaning they are found nowhere else in the world) including Victorias Marine Faunal Emblem, the Weedy Sea Dragon which is listened as near threatened. To better understand these creatures and the impact that humans are having on our Marine Ecosystems the EcoCentre is hosting online incursions which you can find here! https://ecocentre.com/incursions/online/seadragon

08.01.2022 Yesterday Fishcare Geelong/Bellarine facilitator Mitch and volunteers Greg and Steve ventured over to Whyndam Central College to talk all things sustainability and fishing. It was a fantastic day and the weather couldnt be much better down at Ferguson St Pier in Williamstown. If you are part of a school, be it teacher, student or parent and you think this sounds like a good experience for the students dont hesitate to contact us to organise an event. We have aligned our pro...gram with the Victorian curriculum to ensure it fits in with what is being taught around the state. . . . #fishcarevictoria #wefishwecare #sustainablefishing #fishcareGB #williamstown #education See more

08.01.2022 Here’s a fishing facilities upgrade that’ll rock your world! The St Helens rock wall in Geelong is already a super spot to wet a line, and soon its name will r...eally be up in lights - thanks to your fishing licence fees. The Association of Geelong and District Angling Clubs has landed a rec fishing grant to provide solar-powered lighting along the rock wall. That means even when you don’t have the benefit of daylight savings you can head out and land one of the trevally, snapper or flathead in Corio Bay. Geelong City Council’s also chipping in to provide more lighting to increase safety at the rock wall and the adjoining carpark and boat ramp. The Association is hopeful two lights will be installed by Christmas, with more to come as part of an ongoing project. And the rock wall is within casting distance of the new rocky reefs being installed at St Helens, meaning there’ll be more habitat for fish at this already popular spot. To learn more about the 12 projects to get funding in the 2019/20 round of rec fishing grants, visit www.vfa.vic.gov.au/feesatwork2020 #yourfishinglicencefeesatwork #geelong #reefs
