25.01.2022 During August, IMAS University of Tasmania researchers worked with commercial abalone divers to complete Blacklip Abalone dive surveys at 200 sites in Eastern T...asmania - all in just over two weeks! The survey involved paired divers swimming for 10 minutes at each site, counting and measuring every abalone observed, to get a rapid snapshot across a broad area. This enables researchers to effectively measure widespread abalone recovery and abundance. The dive survey is an example of how research and industry can work together to achieve great outcomes. 24.01.2022 Have you caught a salmon escapee? You can be a citizen scientist and help us better understand the implications of large salmon escape events. Each time you g...o fishing for escapees simply take note of: Date and location fished, number of salmon caught (helps us to understand dispersal and catch trends) The salmon’s stomach contents how many have food in their stomachs (what types of food) and how many are empty? (helps us to understand ecological impacts) Keep your notes handy and stay tuned! IMAS fisheries researchers are developing a fisher survey, similar to the one conducted in 2018, and we hope to make it available soon. The aim is to understand the dispersal, trend in catches and potential ecological impacts of these escape events. Read about our 2018 fisher survey: https://tinyurl.com/2018-salmon-escape-study
