22.01.2022 Two days, three divers, two 350HP tow boats, a 30km tow, smashed by a storm halfway backbut finally Madfish, the boat that sank off Dundee last week, is back on dry land. Well done crew on the recovery.

22.01.2022 Attention Corroboree Billabong fishers, especially Corroboree Park Challenge competitors. It has come to our attention that following a recent intervention to i...mprove the usability of the Corroboree Billabong boat ramp, some issues launching and retrieving have reemerged. There have been reports that some fishers may have scraped trailers or motors against parts of the ramp due to an uneven surface. It is our understanding that best way to mitigate potential trailer or boat damage at present is to ensure that all driving on the ramp (reversing and retrieving) is done very slowly and with care. It is also essential to ensure that motors are trimmed up. Today, AFANT has been in conversation with NT Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics staff who alerted us to the reemergence of this matter and who have been very helpful. We understand that Department staff are planning on installing temporary signage this evening (Friday Oct 23). We understand an official update may be posted by the Department, however with Corroboree Park Challenge competitors hitting the water from this afternoon, we want to ensure that the word gets out as soon as possible. We have alerted and briefed the Competition coordinator this afternoon. We remind all users that all people onboard a trailered reversing boat should be fully and safely within the boat at all times (anywhere, not just at this ramp). Issue Background: A number of weeks ago, AFANT contacted the NT Department of Infrastructure Planning and Logistics (DIPL) in response to a number of concerns fishers and AFANT staff had raised about the Corroboree ramp and approaches. DIPL staff responded quickly, causing the removal of debris including rocks and star pickets exposed by receding waters. Work was done on the ramp to reduce the impact of uneven surfaces. Next steps: We will remain engaged with DIPL on safe launching at Corroboree Billabong. We will seek to have a long term solution funded and implemented. We will engage with the community further regarding views on the need for a pontoon, which is something that a number of members (and our staff) have raised and have been concerned about for some time. 19.01.2022 What a story! Former long term Jabiru residents Geoff and Veronica Warhem have cheated death after sinking their boat off Dundee... Geoff was former boss of Gag...adju Contracting (road crew etc.) who along with Kiwi Bayne kept Kakadu National Park dirt roads in top nick for years. Well done guys, glad you’re still alive and well... legends! See more

19.01.2022 The humpback has returned! A humpback whale that spent more than two weeks in the crocodile-inhabited East Alligator River in Kakadu in September has returne...d to the same tropical waterway, baffling scientists as to why it is not heading towards the icy waters of Antarctica. FULL STORY: https://ab.co/367cqhz

18.01.2022 Humpback Whales in Kakadu?! Yep! Three! Parks Australia has issued the following statement: Earlier this week we became aware of a very unusual event at K...akadu National Park - three Humpback Whales had entered the East Alligator River. As far as we’re aware, this is the first time this has happened. Kakadu National Park staff are monitoring the situation and working with NT government authorities to gather data on this unusual event, an expert working group has been set up to monitor the whale and prepare plans for intervention if required. As of Thursday, it appears that only one whale remained in the river. We have put an exclusion zone in place from the mouth of the East Alligator River to a point approximately 30kms upstream (see map) for the welfare of the whale and for the safety of people who may have been considering going to the area by boat. The last thing we want is a collision between a boat and whale in waters where crocodiles are prevalent and visibility underwater is zero. We also don’t want boats to inadvertently force the whale further up the river. The whale is not in distress at the moment and it is not an emergency situation. The best case scenario is for the whale to make its way back out to sea. Kakadu National Park and NT Government scientists will continue to monitor the whale in the coming days. We appreciate that this is a very unusual and exciting event, however, our priority at present is to ensure the safety and wellbeing of visitors and the whale.

16.01.2022 Think Before Release! This video shows the response and recovery of released Golden snapper after being caught from various depths. The fish were caught using ...recreational fishing gear to simulate how they would be taken by the average angler. Evidence shows Golden Snapper are not suitable for catch and release in water deeper than ten meters due to injuries caused by barotrauma. #thinkbeforerelease #onlycatchwhatyouneed #reducewaste #fishguardians

16.01.2022 The NT Fisheries Department is heralding its artificial reef project a success just 12 months after they were deployed. The marine growth on the concrete structures has exceeded expectation and attracted more than 40 contrasting fish species.

14.01.2022 How to report a fish kill Fish kills can occur throughout the year, but are most common during the build-up and beginning of the wet. Fish kills generally o...ccur at this time of year from low oxygen levels in the water, caused by early rains mixing the bottom layer of water with the rest of the water column or by washing rotting organic matter into waterways. If you witness a fish kill, please report it to the Fishwatch Hotline on 1800 891 136 as soon as possible. The sooner we hear about it, the quicker the response and investigation into the cause of the kill.

09.01.2022 A marine exclusion zone will be in place around HMAS Coonawarra from 19 October 2020 while the Department of Defence progresses with the $472 million Larrakeyah Defence Precinct Redevelopment program. The exclusion zone will be in place until mid-2023 while a new 330-metre long wharf and supporting infrastructure is constructed to cater for the safe berthing, mooring and servicing of visiting naval vessels and submarines. The zone will be clearly marked with buoys and only authorised vessels will be able to transit through this area while the exclusion zone is in place.

09.01.2022 Fishos are now welcome back in Kakadu! A temporary ban put in place to protect a humpback whale was lifted overnight. More than ten days ago, a 30km exclusion... zone in the East Alligator River was enforced to protect both the public and the whale. Weeks after it was first spotted, the whale has safely made its way back to sea. Will you be out on the water this weekend?

08.01.2022 Cahill’s Crossing at 0730hrs today is at .8m... still got some floodwaters coming down East Alligator River. High tide around 2pm will probably bump the level u...p over 1m. I think the new rocks that have been placed on the downstream side may have changed the hydrology - it has certainly silted up more on the Anhem Land side and makes the river more turbulent on Kakadu side... stay safe everyone!

07.01.2022 Earlier this week we detected a registered beacon near Dundee Beach, NT. We couldn't get in touch with the owner, however the emergency contact confirmed that t...wo people were on a fishing trip on a small recreational vessel. We tasked two helicopters, the Darwin Water Police, and diverted an Australian Border Force aircraft. The ABF located two people in the water clinging to an Esky, and remained on scene until a nearby vessel arrived. The two survivors suffered minor injuries and were met at Dundee Beach by medical personnel. A great outcome, thanks to everyone involved. And what a timely reminder to register your beacon and update your emergency contact details! Images: Australian Border Force patrol Aircraft

07.01.2022 I went out to the artificial reef that sits in 30 meters of water off Lee point last set of neaps The area now has a couple of resident Tigers and it's no surpr...ise they have an endless supply of mainly juvenile Jewfish suffering barotauma to eat. I had a chat with the fisho that shows up in the background of this footage and informed him about the mortality rate he was inflicting on the local population of Jewies and he seemed to be of the opinion he had no choice, I recommended the right thing to do is move on somewhere else if he already had his bag limit but this fell on deaf ears. I'm not sure what percentage of fishos are of this mind set but surely most of us are aware that fish caught in water deeper than 10 meters are not suitable for release. See more

02.01.2022 STUNNING VESSEL: A new vessel that stuns fish is making waves across Top End waters. It was used to tag the Million Dollar barramundi - but it's also being used to ensure sustainable fishing for years to come.

02.01.2022 Maaate... Make it Eight! The girls are on fire this season with another $10k red tagged barra caught by local fisho Carly Petherick. Carly was using a hand ...line off the rocks near the Nightcliff Jetty and landed the 60cm barra not long long after sunset. Now, we know what you're thinking... that must be one of the tagged fish released at the boat ramp at the start of the season... NOPE it wasn't! This one was released in Middle Harbour and swam 18km along the coast before jumping on Carly's line! There's still plenty of red tags out there with seven carrying the million!
