06.01.2022 This is an important issue that NEEDS our sectors engagement to assist the fisheries managers in making the right decisions! To Quote Starlo's Fishotopia " As someone with half a century of first-hand, on-water experience with yellowtail kingfish, I can tell you that I've watched this fishery ride the most enormous roller-coaster: from its days of incredible abundance in the 1970s and '80s to its catastrophic collapse through the era of those despicable floating (pelagic) kin...gfish traps. Since the removal of those awful traps and the implementation of at least SOME catch controls, the population has definitely rebounded and appears to be on the mend. But there's still a serious imbalance in the chain somewhere, as immature (undersized) kingfish completely dominate catches today. Superficially, that looks and sounds like a good thing... Surely, lots of little kingies will eventually mean lots of bigger kings? If only it were that simple... The peer-reviewed science actually shows that these fish don't spawn for the first time until they're MUCH larger than the current minimum size. So, relatively few are currently surviving long enough to spawn. Any farmer will tell you that this is not a recipe for successful "herd' management. if you keep killing your breeders BEFORE they become breeders, your herd will fail. Simple as that. The bottom line is pretty straightforward: allowing rec' and commercial fishers to continue harvesting large numbers of immature kings before they've had a chance to spawn even once is not sustainable. It ain't rocket science. We need a significantly increased minimum legal length (for all sectors), a reduced bag limit for rec's, and a strictly enforced quota for commercials. Given five or six years of that sort of management, we might actually see kingfish stocks return to something approaching the abundance that "old blokes" like myself saw in the '70s and '80s. Let's hope there's the will to do it, and that Fisheries aren't steam-rollered by those with vested interests in continuing the slaughter of immature kingfish." 01.01.2022 This is a great topic and post from Starlo's Fishotopia - I reckon it depends on the species being chased - but there is no doubt it influences fish activity and their movements significantly. For starters when I'm targeting barra I like the 3 days prior to the full - never like the actual night of the full moon - but again don't mind fishing the 3 days coming off the back of the full moon. I find you always get a peak bite period at dusk and then a record spike inactivity ...with teh rising of the moon after that as well ;-) For Cod, generally, I prefer the week coming off the back of a New moon ;-) What's your favourite moon phase for your favourite species ?...
