22.01.2022 Training for Africa - trekking Mount Kilimanjaro

20.01.2022 Have we got what it takes to climb Kilimanjaro? In five weeks time we hope to be standing at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet), the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. This mountain is the highest free standing mountain in the world and is firmly classified as an extreme altitude mountain trek. On researching interesting facts on Kilimanjaro, this mountain isn’t a walk in the park. It is estimated that around 3-7 people die trying to climb this mountain each year. The causes vary from altitu...Continue reading

20.01.2022 Don't forget the tents!

19.01.2022 NOW WE ARE AT THE POINTY END OF THIS ADVENTURE - 8 days trekking the Lemosho Route With trek bags packed and loaded onto the vehicle we are ready for the 3-4 hr drive in the rain to Kilimajaro National Park's western entrance - the Londorossi Gate (2200m). We will trek around 6km taking between 3-4hrs to camp at 2780m. No doubt our heads will be spinning a little, but with good acclimatisation throughout the trek we should be ok.... This will be our last post till 8 June. You can follow our trek by visiting http://altezza-gps.com/team9

17.01.2022 MT KILIMANJARO - Now for the good, the bad and the ugly...part 1

17.01.2022 SAFARI SAMPLER After a few days rest to recover from our eight day Kilimanjaro trek it was all aboard our Landcruiser Jeeps for a six day safari of Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Parks, Ngorongoro Conservation Park and finally the Serengeti Valley. Nathan, with his super zoom camera has already delighted you with some spectacular wildlife shots. Following is a collection of images snapped on a mobile over the past three days. Enjoy!

14.01.2022 WHERE THE RUBBER MEETS THE ROAD - in our case, the TRACK! Training walk #1 With just 11 weeks to go before we hit the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, it’s now time to ramp up our training swapping runners and three months of step and squat training in the Life & More studio for hiking boots, poles and backpacks. With the cooler weather on Sunday there was no excuse for not getting out into Sturt Conservation Park for a gentle walk breaking in new hiking boots, reacquainting our...selves with our backpack and poles and of course those muscles not accustomed to the steep angles of the fire tracks in the park. In 2 hours we managed 8km, and the equivalent of 12,000 steps and 103 flights of stairs without any blisters. Wish it was that easy on Mt Kili So who is having all this fun and adventure? Let's introduce our group of intrepid travellers - Leonie, the group's guide, Jane, Tania, Julie, Catherine, Nathan and Wil. We hope you will follow us and share in our journey over the next few months as we prepare and undertake this adventure of a life time. Stay tuned!

12.01.2022 THE BIG WEIGH IN ... Well much of today was spent organising our gear for inspection by the trekking company and getting the total weight for the trek pack to 15kg... who knows what Tania did with the other 12kg she brought over with her The afternoon fashion parade did not disappoint...from the poncho off to the summit day layer up we all felt confident that we would be warm and dry.... Then came the weigh in...for some it was back to the drawing board and for others it's an early night

09.01.2022 MT KILIMANJARO - TO COMPETE OR COMPLETE "Are we here to compete or complete this trek?" was the question put to us every day by our guide Mackeke. The motivational pitch worked well as young trekkers powered past us, but in reality we were there to do both - to complete the trek and to compete and challenge ourselves to make it to camp safely each night. CONGRATULATIONS to Leonie, Tania, Julie, Wil, Catherine & Nathan for successfully completing the climb to Stella Point at ...5685m, on the southern crater rim of Kibo - the tallest of Kilimanjaro's three peaks. We have so much to share with you from this adventure, so to begin with we have posted the pictures of each milestone in this eight day trek, and then over the next day or so we will post a few more.

09.01.2022 MT KILIMANJARO - the good, the bad and the ugly - part 2

03.01.2022 24 hrs & 10,825km later! Well we pretty much ate & drank our way to Kilimajaro airport We all agreed that the next thing to check off our bucket list is a round the world ticket traveling business class Our first glimpse of Mt Kilimajaro from the aircraft jolted us into reality for what is to come over the next week... Concerns as to whether our travel company was the real deal were alleviated when we were welcomed and transferred to our vehicle and hotel. The evening briefing was straight to the point with all our questions answered and the promise of a chopper evacuation for US$2k if need be...we have all bases covered! Now the packing begins and a little rest before we head off tomorrow morning

01.01.2022 Well, here we go again - how I love those fire tracks

01.01.2022 KILIMANJARO HERE WE COME! A drink at the bar is a good place to start before the long haul flight to Doha and then onto Kilimanjaro. Why is airline travel all about rushing to wait? So now we wait. Sadly we said goodbye to Jane at the airport who was joining us on this trip but is now recovering from a health issue. No need to unpack Jane, we have the next trip already sorted!... In madness of packing and getting stuff done before going away Tania realised that her suitcase was not big enough and so at the 11th hour purchased a 132ltr suitcase to fit everything but the kitchen sink - it weighed in at 27kg! Good job Tania - you didn't have to leave anything behind! Any we are boarding now... stay tuned to our next post.
