25.01.2022 S N A C K I N G . . Repost by @_reposta BY @jonosteedman ... Anytime I hear I just love snacking I can’t help but hear I just don’t eat enough at my main meals. I’m not here to knock snacking. Although I personally don’t love it, it can be a super valuable tool to help manage energy levels, sneak in more nutrients, eat delicious foods etc. etc. I just find it’s often used to compensate for what was definitely not a big enough breakfast or lunch. In the quest to lose weight, we often confuse eating less with eating as little as possible. This generally blows up in your face later in the day/week, causing you to actually consume MORE calories than you would have if you’d just eaten an adult sized main meal. There’s even some evidence supporting less snacking being beneficial for weight maintenance ((DOI:10.1093/ajcn/52.5.800) If the bottom option is an all too familiar scene, try increasing the size of your main meals. And if you’re struggling to actually eat a big meal because you feel full, maybe take some time to examine whether you’re actually physically full, or have been conditioning yourself to eat small portions for so long that fear decides you’re full before your stomach does.

This little packet of joy is a delicious hot chocolate that contains less than 40 calories. ... Do you need to count calories? No. Should you always choose the lowest calorie version of something? No. Is adjusting your calorie intake to achieve a goal ok? Yes. And for that situation, this can definitely be a useful tool. If you need a sweet hit after dinner but you’re managing your calories, this is your guy (I also think that you should aim to have a few nights with nothing after dinner so dessert doesn’t just become a habit but I digress) Fair warning, it contains erythritol so if the P in FODMAP gives you some grief I would approach with caution. BUT if there’s one food that I feel is sorely lacking in a lot of people’s weight loss attempts, it’s potato* When you compare the calories per bite/kilojoules per gram/rods to the hogshead of potato versus literally any other savoury carbohydrate source, potato wins** Potato FILLS YOU UP. When you’re trying to lose weight, you’re trying to eat a bit less. And you know what helps with that? Foods that FILL YOU UP. I semi regularly have to get clients with a goal of weight gain to eat less potato, because it’s making them too full. They’re also an excellent source of fibre, potassium and Vitamin C. Seriously. This makes the fact that this gluten free Lebanese bread comes from a gluten free only premise Pretty rad. I have a number of celiac clients who have, up until now, had to miss out on the whole Lebanese-bread-as-a-pizza-base cult I’m intent on growing, so I got VERY excited when I saw this at Woolworths. It’s primarily made from rice flour, corn and chickpea flour (and milk solids so heads up it isn’t vegan) and I was pleasantly surprised at the taste and texture. Is it as good as the regular stuff? Fresh, probably not. Pizza base? Close enough in my opinion! Mindfulness has been around since the Buddha sat under a fig tree to help salve his tormented soul, and that was over 2500 years ago. . . It's become very popular recently, that's another certainty. Maybe now more than ever - with our busy lives and growing mental health challenges - we need mindfulness to help us settle and rediscover ourselves. . . The door has been opened and its up to us to walk through it. . . Mindfulness is simple, really. Its not much more than being able to focus on the present moment and attend to that moment with curiosity and acceptance and without judgement. . . I’m not an Up & Go connoisseur, but this tastes pretty much like a regular Up & Go, which is pretty impressive given it’s dairy and gluten free. ... Decent amount of soy protein - one of the highest quality plant based proteins, that you don’t need to be afraid of, even if some idiot on social media tells you they’ve read the studies (I find they always forget to add the word incorrectly at the end of that sentence) Dairy free and gluten free (these things don’t automatically make it good, but do make it more flexible so people who can’t have regular Up & Goes/Gos/Goeses can still partake) Fortified with a decent whack of vitamins including B12 and calcium (both harder to get on a vegan/dairy free diet) I don’t love that this is marketed as a liquid breakfast. I am not a fan of people breaking their fast with something so tiny. If you’re going to break your fast, break it properly. It DOES however make a great pre training option or a snack if you were to pair it with a piece of fruit or something similar (parentheses for completeness) In summary: a surprisingly good, nifty little dairy free hit of protein that probably shouldn’t be the only thing you have for breakfast.
04.01.2022 Repost by @_reposta I find it really hard to get excited about soup. My jaw works. My teeth are fine. I don’t really need my food pre chewed.... But I get asked about prepackaged soups a loooooooot so I decided to take a bullet and check out this cool little range of high protein, vegan soups from Heinz. My goodness. What a tasty bullet. After 2 mouthfuls I was extremely bummed that I only had one pouch. I can’t speak for the rest of the range (yet) but this Moroccan one was incredible. It’s definitely not enough protein for a single meal for my requirements (roughly 0.3-0.55g per kg of bodyweight for those of you who like to massively overcomplicate things) but it still very much outclasses most packet soups AND it’s vegan. That’s pretty cool. If you need more protein, spike it with a tin of tuna/beans/lentils etc, or have a boiled egg/yoghurt pouch/handful of edamame on the side. Caveat: it is not low in sodium, which is important for anyone with high blood pressure or kidney issues, but if you don’t relate to either of those groups and consume an otherwise balanced diet, it’s not something to stress about Anyways. These are cool. Super cool. If you are also super cool, you should check them out* *(unless you have high BP or kidney issues in which case you can continue to be super cool without checking them out) See more
