20.01.2022 #OnThisDay 65 years ago, one of the great moments in Aussie sport occurred during the Australian Athletics Championships in Melbourne. Running in the one mile e...vent, Ron Clarke clipped an athlete and fell to the track. John Landy, stopped, turned around, and ran back to him to check he was okay. After hearing Clarke say ‘I’m alright, run on’, Landy resumed running. The other athletes were 60 yards ahead but Landy caught the field and won the race. AOC historian, the late Harry Gordon working for the Herald and Weekly Times wrote: Yours was the classic sporting gesture. It was a senseless piece of chivalry but it will be remembered as one of the finest actions in the history of sport.
