06.01.2022 We have all heard the word "macros" before when it comes to working on our diet and figuring out what we should be eating but not everyone know what macros actually are or what the word means... Macros (short for macronutrients) are the fats, proteins, and carbohydrates that make up our food and help us create the energy we need to get through day to day life. Macronutrients are large, diverse families of molecules that make up the food we eat. While each food has a differe...nt macronutrient make-up, as well as a different amounts of available energy, all foods are made of at least one macronutrient. Each macronutrient molecule type stores and releases different amounts of energy when we break it down during digestion and absorption. Protein has about 4 calories per gram. Carbohydrates also have about 4 calories per gram. Fat has about 9 calories per gram. Macronutrients are often measured and tracked in grams and generally expressed as percentages of the daily total calorie intake. (e.g. 30% daily caloric intake is protein, 30% fats, 40% carbs) A good (macro-based) diet will ensure that you eat the right amount of food for your goals and needs as well as choosing high-quality, nutrient-rich foods (more bang for your buck from the foods you eat) In short, we eat to get energy and nutrients to live a long and healthy life So, both the quantity of the food that we eat (caloric intake) and the quality of the food that we eat (the nutrient makeup of our foods) can affect our physiological function. It affects our health, our performance, our recovery, our body weight/body composition (e.g. fat mass) and even our sleep! There is no one size fits all macronutrient distribution range. It will vary for different people based on our goals and needs. The main point is to find a ratio you can stick with based on your goal (weight loss, building muscle, etc) and to focus on healthy, nutrient rich foods! #healthyeating #macros #bethechange #youniquejourney

02.01.2022 With the holiday season being a super busy time of the year for everyone it's so easy to let your training fall by the wayside... Here are some tips to help keep you on track over the Silly Season: Setting a goal ("New Years Resolution") and starting to work on it now rather than later will help you through some of the silly season. Maybe you have always wanted to run a marathon, or perhaps you want to increase your endurance or lose weight... Whatever it might be, if yo...u’ve been thinking about a particular goal, now is the time to take action, NOT JANUARY 1st. Write down your goal and any actionable steps you need to take to achieve it then, break it down into fortnight, weekly or even daily goals. If you expect to be busy this silly season, make sure you keep health and fitness as part of your schedule. Make a point to schedule in workouts and trips to the gym when you can and then stick to those plans, even if it's 40 degrees outside! Routine is the key to any good workout schedule! Ask for fitness gear from your family - if it means that you’ll work out harder, more often and better throughout this crazy time then why not? At this time of year with all the sales on treat yourself and Indulge in that latest piece of fitness tech or pick up that new activewear you’ve been eyeing off! Sometimes all you need is a bit of socialisation and fun to make your workout more engaging. A fun group fitness class will not only make sure you stay healthy through this crazy season, but will also increase your fitness levels and possibly even introduce you to some new fitness friends (we have the best fit fam going around!). Best of all our facility is indoors out of the heat and we are open all through the holidays! Check out our class timetable on our website. Individual classes are available for casual visits. Better yet, trial unlimited classes with a free 7-day pass! #fitness #goals #trainharder #groupfitness #sillyseason #youniquejourney #bethechange
