24.01.2022 Squats are an integral exercise that anyone and everyone should practice... with or without load, slow or fast, to parallel or ass to floor....there are many variables that can make all squats easy or difficult Some people ask why squatting is hard - or why they can’t squat without back or knee pain - or why their trainer keeps telling them they need to squat deeper, but after trying and trying they just can’t. All of this is dependent on each individual’s anatomy - most s...pecifically the hips, knees and ankles... Yes... we are all the same... but we are all very different! The next few posts will cover squat anatomy - and if you are working on your squats but just can’t seem to make any improvements then get in touch for some help. #youdontknowsquat #squat #fitlosophyphysio #fitlosophy_brisbane #brisbanephysio

24.01.2022 Squats are bad for my knees! Squats are bad for your knees?? Whoever told you that doesn’t know how to squat. Yep, some people battle knee pain or injuries and the thought of doing squats can be scary. Yes squats under huge load with poor form can look scary, but, when the knee functions properly, there is nothing to be afraid of, in fact research shows squats are beneficial to knee health. The knee consists of 2 main joints the tibiofemoral joint and the patellofemoral j...oint. The tibiofemoral joint is the main joint we talk about during a squat. As we squat if the foot is internally or externally rotated, this causes rotation at the tibia and this can have an effect on the joint mechanics. This is can be seen when the knees track inwards or knock towards each other. This is normally due to weak glutes, external rotators and adductors and then over using the lateral quads to stabilise instead. So we should do exercises to strengthen and stabilise our glutes, inner thigh, hamstrings and calf muscles and then ensure proper mechanics to squat better. In the event of past knee injury sometimes it can be this simple to help you get some strength back in those knees! 14.01.2022 Give misinformation the slip #discmyths! Dont worry your intervertebral discs cant slip away from you.....they arent the slippery little suckers they are made out to be! Discs are attached to our vertebra via the end plates, and longitudinal ligaments which makes it nearly impossible for them to slip. ... They can however degenerate, bulge and herniate which is quite common and sometimes totally painless! So try not to get caught up in your discs slipping out and avoiding crucial exercises like squats, deadlifts, or overhead presses for fear of back and neck pain or injury. Instead seek professional advice and guidance in these essential movements to get your spine strong and healthy! Book an a consultation to find out more and decrease your slipping fears! #discmyths #discsdontslip #brisbanephysio #fitlosophyphysio #fitlosophybrisbane #spinehealthandfitness @ Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

13.01.2022 Have you ever avoided doing something for fear of pain? Perhaps you wont squat, deadlift or even climb stairs for fear of back or knee pain. If we look more closely at how we squat or deadlift - and we correct the how or the form/techniques - then the potential for pain can easily be avoided #fitlosophyphysio #physio #biomechanics #brisbanephysio

13.01.2022 Physios are movement specialists aiming to get people moving in which ever form of exercise or sport they choose. - Often patients present with barriers to specific exercises or movements which may be due to past injury, but mostly because they have been told NOT to. - Yes there are times they should not be performed but mostly there will be a slight change or modification that will allow those movements or activities to be carried out. -... 12.01.2022 Banded Crab walks done the wrong way get on my goat ! I see this exercise being implemented incorrectly all the time and so I have to write this post. Thanks @physionetwork for the research review. Yes banded/resisted crab walks can help strengthen the glutes but the exercise I see most people executing provides little to no evidence of any glute muscle activity... but it does result in a whole lot of Tensor fascia lata (TFL) activity combined excessive internal rotation of the femur The exercise can be implemented in differing amounts of hip flexion or rotation - so if you cant feel your glutes working then get in touch with us for professional advice and guidance in these essential movements to get your glutes stronger #crabsonyourtoes #doitright #brisbanephysio #fitlosophyphysio #fitlosophybrisbane #glutescanbeused

09.01.2022 Core Strength? Core Stability? Are they the same? No they arent! ...but you need BOTH to have optimal core control. Can you hold a Plank for 2 minutes or do 50 Hanging Leg Raises? If you can, thats great... but can you stand on one leg for a minute with your eyes closed? If not, then you may not have Core Stability - and therefore suboptimal core control.... CORE STABILITY is the neural or subconscious coordination of all the smaller stabilising muscles working together synergistically to keep our body in alignment / or upright. Whereas CORE STRENGTH is using the larger prime mover muscles to perform repeated bouts of core exercises. We need BOTH of these core systems to be as strong and stable as possible for optimal performance. So to be the best runner, cyclist, triathlete or touch player you can be, start training your CORE STABILITY along with CORE STRENGTH now! 07.01.2022 When was the last time you trained your calves? #fitlosophyphysio #runner #calves #brisbanephysio @ Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

05.01.2022 How to squat series: MOVE THOSE ANKLES!!! We have discussed the role of the foot in the squat but now we move slightly up to the ankle. Yes, both the foot and ankle are a synergistic complex, but it’s important we look at them separately. When we squat we need adequate ankle dorsiflexion (letting the shin move down towards the foot). If a patient has had multiple ankle sprains or fractures they will likely have tight or shortened gastrocnemius and soleus muscles (calf) and/o...r a stiff talocrual (ankle) joint. Both of these cause limited dorsiflexion and therefore may make patients feel like their heels are lifting off the floor, their foot over-pronating, their knees knocking together or their trunk leaning too far forwards when they squat. Many individuals who squat in shoes will miss these technique problems so, it is important to squat or perform functional weight bearing exercises bearfoot at times to check your ankle and foot squat form. How do we correct this?? Not every one is the same but flexibility and strengthening exercises for the calves and possibly joint mobilization for the ankle may be required to regain 15-20 of ankle dorsiflexion. Click Book now in the bio and book an appointment to get some advice or fixes for your ankles or squats today! #bendyankles #anklephysio #squat #kneesovertoes #dorsiflexion #fitlosophyphysio #fitlosophy #brisbanephysio #physio
