24.01.2022 One of the more challenging emotions yet when we embrace our situation with ‘courage’, we open our mind to a new mindset and outlook on ourselves and what is happening around us. Research now shows that the radical acceptance of all of our emotions - even the messy, difficult ones - is the cornerstone to resilience, thriving, and true, authentic happiness. But courage is more than just the acceptance of emotions. Our emotions are data that tells us what we’re missing in our l...ives. A ‘guilty’ parent might be missing real connection with her child. Grief is love, looking for its home reminding us of the our special times. So, slow down and face into your difficult emotions with courage. What you find there will signpost to you how to make better decisions and take values-based actions.

21.01.2022 World suicide prevention day. This is a highly personal and sensitive post for me but one I thought relevant to share as it’s world suicide prevention day. 22 years ago I lost my sister, Fiona, to suicide. Fiona was my crazy older sister, full of zest and very very funny.... An adventurous child, wild at heart and mischievous throughout her childhood and this showed up in absenteeism and her lack of interest in school, which subsequently sadly led her down the path of troubled days both in and out of school, early participation in drugs and alcohol and leaving home when she was just 16 years old. My parents and I were so ill equipped to deal with Fiona’s erratic and volatile behaviour and her lifestyle habits that we simply shied away from it. From day to day we never knew what trouble would strike and our family was always on the edge waiting and anticipating. It was a secret that our family, like many other families, held close as the fear of judgement was strong and lack of control palpable. In the 90’s the topic of mental health was relatively unknown and resources outside of the family doctor were pretty much unavailable. We didn’t know what to do and now in hindsight I can see we were suffering from a sense of helplessness, embarrassment and shame and its deeply sad that Fiona never received the help and support she so desperately needed and nor did we as a family. After years of addiction and unsuccessful treatment, she took her life in desperate circumstances. Fiona is missed by many while the absence of her struggle is not. It’s hard to write about these mixed feelings.Even all these years later. To have known the signs and symptoms of anxiety, mood disorders and signs of addiction would have helped us and I feel enormous relief when I see the resources available now for victims and families. People suffering from disorders need to be heard, their feelings to be validated and they need care and support. As do the families who have family members who are experiencing these disorders. Please do not judge, offer kindness and compassion and please know that victims and families of suicide never forget the impact and live with the loss forever.

19.01.2022 Emotions vs. Feelings It’s easy to get confused about the difference between words like emotion and feeling. Here are some definitions that may help. Emotions are short-lived responses to stimuli (either real or imagined) and cause shifts in cognition, physiology, expression and behavior.... Feelings are the short-term, private experience of emotions. They are often more complex and can represent a mixture of several emotions at once. Love and shame are examples of feelings. Moods are emotional states that may not have an identifiable cause, last longer in duration, and are less intense than the experience of a singular emotion. Disposition is a characteristic long-term pattern of emotion that becomes a baseline of where an individual ‘lives’ emotionally. With planning and practice, it’s possible to change disposition by recognizing long-held tendencies and regulating towards more supportive emotional states. This Guide is borrowed from the Emotion Life Lab, a complete digital learning system co-developed by the Mood Meter’s creators. 18.01.2022 Fitmind Wise Women Series I Naomi Steer, National Director of Australia for UNHCR. Humble words from this wonderful selfless leader.

17.01.2022 Ruth Bader Ginsburg became the second female U.S Supreme Court Justice on August 10, 1993. An advocate and activist for minority groups, women's rights and gender equality, she forever remains a pioneering leader. A woman of many wise words, including one of our favourite quotes above.

17.01.2022 I am both humbled and honoured to be featured in the Top 10 leadership coaches of 2020 by Boost Media Agency and Yahoo Finance - https://finance.yahoo.com//top-10-leadership-coaches-leadi With the world in chaos throughout 2020, leadership is more important now than ever. We need more courageous and civil minded leadership in all sectors and in our governments. We see admirable and brave leadership in the entrepreneurial space and community led organisations.... Effective leaders are those who lead with purpose and hold an inspiring vision, they value people (their teams and their stakeholders) and bring them along, and show compassion and vulnerability. Thus leadership in our homes matters too, living life according to your own values, not those prescribed by others. Like many other skills, with the right guidance and direction, leadership can be learned. According to @boostmedia_agency, a great coach can help you grow into the leader you truly desire to be.

17.01.2022 Reminder to Self - The comfort of Nature Nature makes me feel alive and reminds me of my smallness on the planet. Being in nature helps me keep perspective on my role as a mother, a community member and as a coach. As I wander the trails and feel the muscles working in my legs, the wind on my face and messing with my hair, I feel grounded and calm. I have time to connect with my thoughts and feelings and return my focus to what matters. I spent a week in beautiful Byron Ba...y, nourishing myself - immersing myself in the natural environment with walks, runs and bike rides, giving myself new experiences of different pilates and yoga classes, shifting my daily routine from the one I have at home, not jam packing my day but taking it more mindfully and listening to my body and resting when needed (and noticing the voice in my head that is inclined to say I should be doing. and rather shifting to more being. We can’t all move to Byron but we all need a sacred place that enables you to connect with your thoughts and feelings? What is that place for you?

16.01.2022 Annie @anniecantoo and I love hearing feedback from our 'Coaching for purpose' participants. In this instance one of our scholarship recipients and leaders, Karen Kennedy of Partnerships & Fundraising Director at @raisefoundation I feel so fortunate to have been provided the opportunity to be involved in the Coaching for Purpose program. As a leader it is essential that we continue to focus on growing, learning and refining our skills. Businesses change, adapt and evolve and... if we want to be effective leaders, we need to too. My coaching sessions have been invaluable and have challenged behaviours and life-long assumptions for me that have really made me reflect on how I lead and the kind of leader I want to be. The lessons I have learned have been transformative and also practical, things that I am able to implement immediately that have had positive impacts and outcomes. I’m very confident that as a result of this opportunity my working relationships are stronger, my confidence as a leader has grown and that I have stepped further into my role with purpose and focus."

15.01.2022 Ourfirst Well-being workshop for 2021 kicks off tomorrow. Susan and I are looking forward to sharing lots of resources and tools to help you reset and refocus and to improve your well-being for the year ahead. We have a whole kit of evidence based positive psychology tools and conversations that we will provide and guide you through. Plus, we will enjoy the beautiful setting of Bundeena where we can navigate our thoughts throughthe serenity and sounds of nature. The delicio...us food has been lovingly prepared and we have the candles ready to light and the journals for you ready to write in. Can’t wait to see our gorgeous participants for the March 11 workshop at 8.30am tomorrow.

13.01.2022 As you move through the tiers of emotions, you will find space to ‘Reset’. This is the time for reflection. What priorities did you once have that no longer seem important? What parts of ‘normal’ do you not want to rush back to? Gather your data, keep a journal, and reflect on what you learn about yourself. This information is valuable and it will guide you as you move forward.

13.01.2022 It's been a busy week at FMC but we are still feeling inspired and re-energised from our Women's Retreat days last week. It was a pleasure to host our second group of women last Saturday. The day was filled with reflection and mutual communication, intertwined with lots of shared stories and joyful laughter amongst us all. Any recent worries or doubts in our minds were swiftly swept away on a somewhat windy coastal hike!

13.01.2022 Fitmind Wise Women I Anneke van den Broek - CEO & Founder of Rufus & Coco and The Fur Salon Thank you @annekevandenbroek for sharing your success story and wise words.

06.01.2022 UNHCR Leading Women Fund I am a Founding 50 woman. Members of this group are connected directly with a Syrian refugee woman who is head of her household and living in Amman Jordan on a new app that for the first time allows donors to talk to refugees across the world. Email [email protected] to get on the waitlist for 2021.... This program is all about empowering women with dignity and respect. I am proud to be a #Founding50Women

06.01.2022 Fitmind Wise Women Series I Anneke van den Broek - CEO & Founder of Rufus & Coco and The Fur Salon Describe the key behaviours you ascribe to your success as a leader? It took me many years to truly understand the old saying of ‘put your own oxygen mask on first’. How often have the kids been a bit feral? And then you have realised the correlation that you are also feeling out of control.... I have strong rituals - I exercise at least 5 days a week a combo of running, training and yoga, while food is medicine. I make it a habit to carve out slots in my diary to read up on relevant industry research or get a few chapters into a motivational book. I carefully choose the people I surround myself and give time to. I need a team who have a shared passion for our vision, who bring exceptional skills to the table but above all have a willingness to continue to learn. At Rufus & Coco I call them my team of Unicorns! I have a very strong learning orientation and so I’m constantly pushing myself and the team to continue to learn and grow. I genuinely think we can always do better and I think this mindset continues to propel us forward. What has given you the greatest joy as a leader? The ability to give back and have my voice heard when it comes to causes I am passionate about. Our toy range donates 5% of sales to Aust. Pet Welfare Foundation - aimed at improving the bond between pets and humans, and reducing unnecessary euthanasia in Aust. pounds. In FY20 we were able to raise a $50K donation to this cause. Equally rewarding is seeing my team members grow and achieve things, they initially never thought possible. I am passionate about advocating for the rights of pet owners. A campaign dear to my heart is about people in rented accommodation being able to own animals. In America, 60 percent of rented dwellings allow pets, while in Australia it is 5 percent, even though the evidence suggests that they're so good for humans. Finding the right mentors was a significant step for me on the journey to success. Working closely with them taught me how to become laser-focused and keep my team pinpointed to our shared goals, driving the vision forward.

05.01.2022 Connection is so important, now more than ever. Even though you cannot be in someone’s physical presence, you can continue to nourish your relationships, especially if you’re feeling lonely. You need that support. Also, if safe, make sure to hug your child and/or partner. Put down your phone and laugh with your family, play games, do puzzles.

04.01.2022 for UNHCR - Australians Supporting the UN Refugee Agency. Naomi was recently announced a Finalist for the CEO Magazine Executives of the Year 2020 - https://www.theceomagazine.com//finalists-executive-award/ - so it is even more fitting to feature this wonderful leader aspart of our Wise Women series. Describe the key behaviours you ascribe to your success as a leader?... Self awareness, empathy, adaptability and determination. A communicator, facilitator and integrator. What has been a significant challenge you have overcome in your career? Early on in my career I found myself working in quite a toxic environment. I ended up missing out on a promotion I felt I deserved. Instead of being a negative experience it turned out to be a positive turning point for me. Itt helped me identify the kind of environment I needed to be in to thrive as well as the kind of work that most motivated me. What has given you the greatest joy as a leader in your field? My greatest joy is seeing the impact of our work supporting refugees and the messages of support we get from both our donors and the people we support about how our work has been life changing for them. That makes the effort we all put in worth it. I also love it when I am able to pass on skills and knowledge to my team and they pick up the learnings and run with it. How has coaching added value to your leadership journey? Coaching was invaluable for me to see the impact I could have on my team through my behaviour and feedback. I think this is an expectation from most employees now - but having to rely on my own resources for much of my career I don’t think this came easily to me. It is something I had to learn and am still learning ....... Sheena has been a signatory to the Australia for UNHCR Leading Women Fund ‘Founding 50’, as well as leading the UNHCR women's leadership program in 2019 to Uganda. ‘Founding 50’ donors have the opportunity to connect with refugee women and learn more about each other’s daily lives and experience -"It’s a way to meet each other not as donors and beneficiaries, but as equals, with much to share and learn from each other.

03.01.2022 Many clients report broken sleep, difficulty in switching off at night and getting back to sleep when woken during the night. Sleep is so important and we can't underestimate the importance of it for our clarity of thinking. Some interesting facts about sleep are: Healthy adults need between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per night. REM sleep makes up between 20-25% of total sleep in healthy adults - the largest segments of REM sleep normally occur during the second half of a sleep p...eriod. REM sleep is necessary for us to process emotions. Body temperature during sleep drops by one to two degrees fahrenheit - don’t overdress for bed. In healthy adults, caffeine has a half-life of five hours, which means that around half of the caffeine consumed will be eliminated from the body in five hours. Drinking more than two servings of alcohol per day for men and more than one serving per day for women has been found to decrease sleep quality by 39.2%. 75 minutes of high-intensity exercise or 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week has been associated with reduced levels of daytime sleepiness and better concentration even when tired. 03.01.2022 Is emotional stability all it’s cracked up to be? What’s your emotional barometer? Do you get overwhelmed by your emotions? Do you get stressed out easily? By listening to our emotions, they can help us make progress towards our goals - including the goals we hold for ourselves in our relationships. When we say emotions - How do you react? Do you think of emotions as positive or negative? Which ones do you notice more? Are your emotions a roller coaster or a merry go round? ...Are your emotions destructive? Do you listen to and feel all your emotions? Or do you have the capacity to observe, reflect? Is emotional stability all it's cracked up to be? To get more of an insight into this topic, I highly recommend watching or listening to this talk by Peter Koval, part of the PsychTalks at University of Melbourne, 2019. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7qZhtd067k&feature=youtu.be Image via Pinterest @paper_smiths

03.01.2022 This week FitMind celebrates 4 years of business. Wow four years - where did that go? When I was a teenager I dreamed of having my own business but circumstances were such that I was not bold or brave enough to take that risk. I’m thankful that I had a long corporate career, I took a few breaks to go back to University to get additional qualifications and then when I was courageous enough, I finally stepped out to live my dream. Now I’m in a profession which I love and the w...ork suits my personality, my values and my strengths. At FitMind we get to work with awesome people who want to grow and change some thing(s)in their life. And yes, at FitMind, like any business, we learn new things everyday. But it’s not always the dream life because navigating technology, saying no to opportunities and closing my laptop at the end of the day are not my strengths. But I’m good at dealing with the competition, contracting, outsourcing stuff that I’m not the expert in, collaborating with experts, leading people, managing my business priorities, ideating and financial management. What matters most is, FitMind clients are highly satisfied. So, thanks to all my colleagues who collaborate with me to deliver coaching services and programs, clients who have bought my services and providers who enable FitMind to run successfully.Without you, there would be no birthday! P.S. This is also a reminder for all of us of the importance of celebrating milestones and achievements, big and small, personal and professional. It is about acknowledging the work you’ve put in, the sacrifices you’ve made, and the energy you’ve directed towards your dream/goal. Whether you celebrate privately or publicly it doesn’t matter as celebrations are a time of reflection and saying wow, we did that and the more we integrate our successes, the more we will see that future goals and dreams are possible. 02.01.2022 As the sun shines again today it makes me realise how much I value being able to go outside. This is indeed my mindfulness practice, where I can experience just 'being' rather than thinking about my next ‘to do’ list. When we slow down by just simply being rather than constantly doing, we allow space for our thoughts to also slow. When our thoughts are not racing and we are not overwhelmed, we have much more capacity for creativity, fun, connection and laughter. By slowing do...wn both our mind and body, we allow ourselves to come to a calmer state of being. In a constantly busy body and mind, we are always putting ourselves under stress. As much as we think we enjoy it, constant stress is not good for our health, nor our attention and rational thinking. In fact, we limit our ability to cope and problem solve, which can lead to bigger issues. So step back, notice your overwhelm and create some space, utilising your internal resources of mindfulness and external resources of the support of others either friends, family, therapist or coach.

01.01.2022 Are you creating time and space for your own development? Particularly in times of chaos, we all benefit from our support networks. Our peer and professional network can also be a place where we can both receive and give support to other women towards success. There are various groups to get involved with if you don’t have your own. Join our one day getaway to meet like minded women, or the Coaching for Purpose program if you are looking to develop your leadership. Sheena also facilitates with Behind Closed Doors@bcdwomen who are focused on women’s leadership and professional development in Australia through peer coaching and mentoring that connects businesswomen and female entrepreneurs with broader networks. 01.01.2022 As we wrap-up the weekend to prepare for a new week ahead, let's look at the importance of 'Routine', as emphasised in @susandavid_phd Emotional Pyramid. Human beings need routine in order to maintain a sense of order. It’s the glue that holds us together from day to day. When we are faced with the unfamiliar, we tend to fill in the gaps with fear. We are currently away from our routinesworking from home, homeschooling, and living in close quarters with others. We are adapti...ng to unprecedented circumstances. This can be scary. So let’s fill in the gaps of the unknown with things that are comfortable, familiar, and connected with our values. Healthy routines are essential, specifically those associated with sleep, exercise and eating. Our bodies and minds are so interconnected and our physical health is reflected in our psychological state. Try to ground yourself during the course of the day by incorporating experiences that are reminiscent of your normal lifestyle. Whether that means waking up at the time you normally would to commute to work or maintaining your family tradition of Friday movie night, the preservation of these small habits will give you comfort. Remember that it may not be possible to adhere to all aspects of your regular routine and approach this new reality with grace instead of rigidity.
