12.01.2022 Tight Quads? When I meet new clients more often then not they have very tight quads and hip flexors. People ask how can this affects my lower back? Firstly an...y unnecessary tension and tightness firstly does not feel too great but also restricts how your body is able to move. Having tight quads and in particular the rectus femoris muscle (one of your quads as well as hip flexor) restrict and pulls your pelvis into an anterior tilt, which basically means more pressure on your lower back. If we loosen your quads and hips there will be less pressure and force on your lower back relieving some discomfort. There are actually many other ways to take the load off your lower back such as strengthening your hamstrings and deeper core muscles. Thr body is amazing and all works together. We must restore ourselves to a state with no added discomfort to move our best pain free. Perform this daily for 60-90 seconds, it's an easy one and you can actually play on your phone at the same time so no excuses . Great post by @spine_fit . 12.01.2022 Prana: breath and life force. So how’s your breathing ? Breathing is crucial in our life, that’s what separate us from the moment we are born from the moment... we die . The Indian tradition emphasise the importance of different breathing techniques AKA Pranayama to enhance your health and life quality. In the video down below I teach you the Nadi Shodhan Pranayama technique (Alternate Nostril Breathing). The major benefit of this technique is to pause the chatter mind allowing you to be more centred and calm . Therefore practicing at least once a day you bring you the sense of peace , reduce stress levels and clear your mind, hence sharping you focus. Once performing this exercise remind yourself not to force the breathing, rather focus on the length of the inhale and exhale, which should be long. Now it’s your turn . 05.01.2022 Awesomeness from my good pal @optimize.physiotherapy Restoring, maintaining, and using hip extension . We live in a time where sitting is often the positio...n of choice for large periods of each day. This amounts to us spending a lot of time in hip flexion . Hip extension = walking Hip extension = glutes . The ability to extend well through the hip joint is critical to maintain over time - its a necessary element to express essential movement patterns like walking and running in an efficient way . Not being able to extend through the hips well creates the need for other joints to have to work overtime to create forward propulsion during gait. In the long term, this isnt an ideal strategy, and contributes to shorter walking strides and compensatory movement (specifically at the low back and knees) . Its simple: Use it or lose it. If you spend lots of time in hip flexion, just make sure you offset this with some hip extension mobility work, walking, etc. Improve your hip extension, and then use it regularly . Being mindful of your walking pattern can go a long way. Bouts of walking for the purpose of opening the hips can also be a great habit to get into . 02.01.2022 SL leg exercises Who should be doing them? Short answer for me would be everyone. Again with every form of training, the why and how much comes down to goals.... Examples been sport specific, current injury as well injury prevention and Hypertrophy. Put all this aside there are so many benefits to Single Leg training. Some of the few reasons why I use them in my training and we incorporate them here at fitness culture are: SL exercises tend to mimic our gait a little better then bilateral exercises. Take walking for example we tend to spend most of our time on one leg. (This is a complicated topic which I’ll do in a seperate post). it is great for improving balance. helps to focus on a movement pattern and allow us to see where a movement may be going wrong Can decrease risk of current and future injuries It helps to notice and improve our imbalances/restrictions on a particular side While doing a SL exercise this requires more stability therefor tends to use our trunk stabilisers in a different way to support us. I think for most people Hypertrophy is a big goal. So doing a single leg exercises allows for little to no assistance of the opposing leg, depending on the exercise. What ever your goal i think we can all benefit from single leg exercises. In the videos are a few of my favourites. Be aware the SL hack squat is a killer. Don’t jump straight into that one!!! Starting with eccentrics is also a good option. The SL step up is a better place to start and can be altered in height to each individual need and Great for all levels of training ability.
