25.01.2022 A FANTASTIC way to overcome "Monday Blues" AND Improved self confidence.... According to research published in the journal Applied Research in Quality of Life, physical activity and sports participation is associated with improved self-image and self-esteem. The participants in the study reported that exercise improved psychological well-being, including reduced anxiety and fewer social problems. It also had positive effects on their happiness and life satisfaction. The resea...rchers note that activities involving other people may carry multiple social, mental, and physical benefits. The take-home: Feeling comfortable with who you are has a significant effect on your quality of life. Exercise is proven to build your self-image and self-confidence. Group activities and sports participation also offer social benefits, especially if the activity matches your fitness and skill level. If team sports aren’t your thing, try Aqua Fun with the Nutty bunch at FITNUTZ H20!!
25.01.2022 Due to the popularity and success of the arthritis and osteoporosis program that we ran recently at the warm water hydrotherapy pool in Coconut Grove, we're thrilled to be running it again starting on 31st August to help people primarily with mobility problems. So if you know of anyone whom you think would benefit from water-based exercise in a warm indoor pool to improve their mobility, fitness and general well-being, let us know. There will be a reward for you for each person you recommend that signs up on the program. See Nikki or Colin for a brochure
25.01.2022 WOW!! What an amazing turnout yesterday folks! It was so inspiring to see so many of you in the pool staying true to your health and fitness commitments and having fun at the same time with the picturesque backdrop of a stunning tropical sunset. And a huge welcome back to see some of the familiar faces we have missed lately too! Fantastic job wonder women! Keep up the amazing work! On another note, I've just updated our timetable on our Facebook page as some classes will... now return back to the NIghtcliff Pool (mainly the shallow ones) effective as of Tuesday 9th June (AFTER the long weekend). We're trying this out for the dry season and would appreciate your feedback so that we can make it work for as many of you as possible. Scroll down to "About" then click "General Information" to view it. Aww, what the hell!! Here's the crux of it for your viewing pleasure:- ****Effective as of Tuesday 9th June****. NIGHTCLIFF POOL Mon (shallow): 5.30 pm- 6.15 pm Wed (deep) : 5.30 pm- 6.15 pm Thur (shallow) 5.30 pm- 6.15 pm Sun (shallow) 10.00 am -11.15 am DARWIN SKI CLUB Tue (deep): 5.30 pm - 6.15 pm Wed (deep): 5.30 pm - 6.15 pm Sat (deep) : 9.30 am - 10.15 am
23.01.2022 Hello Fitnutterz! It's hump day again and there's no better way to shrug off those midweek blues and stresses than to burn off some calories, get those endorphins flowing, and splashing along to some sick beats! Today, we have deep water classes being run at BOTH venues- Nightcliff Pool with Jojo and Darwin Ski Club with Susan, both venues come with a stunning sunset, totally free of charge! And don't forget, tomorrow is the second Thursday of the month which means it's time ...for drinks, snacks, nibblies and sunsets after the shallow water class at Nightcliff pool run by the gruesome twosome, Nikki and Colin. Remember, if you want to bring along something to share, let us know when you arrive and your class will be FREE!! Even if you don't bring something, please come along anyway and enjoy a bite and a drink or two, and enjoy the company of some incredibly awesome athletes! See you there, legends!! See more
23.01.2022 Good Morning Fitnutterz Just in case any of you are interested in attending the Darwin Waterfront Aqua Sessions in the future, there will be a Facebook Poll coming out on this page so keep an eye out and cast your vote. Thanks so much Jeanette McClelland for looking into this for us
23.01.2022 A huge shout out to all those athletes who came to yesterday's launching of the new Sea Change Bodyworks program. It was great to see so many newbies coming along to try it out, as well as many of our veteran aqua legends giving it a go. We know it's something that you're not used to and for some of you, you probably felt like a fish out of water (gotta love the pun!) Remember, all the rewards are on the other side of the comfort zone. And if you're feeling some muscle soreness, that is perfectly normal and will gradually get less as your muscles get stronger and become more efficient at removing the lactic acid that builds up from such exercise. Pain is weakness leaving the body so don't be afraid to embrace the pain because it is only temporary. Great work everyone and keep it up!!!
23.01.2022 Happy hump day Fitnutterz! We've made it halfway through the week and the month too!! So come on down to Nightcliff Pool or Darwin Ski Club this arvo at 5.30 for an exhilarating deep water class to fire up your metabolism, boost your energy levels and whip you into shape! You can reward yourself tomorrow night at our monthly after-workout sunset drinks and nibbles at 6.30pm after Nikki's shallow water class at Nightcliff. Will post more details tomorrow! Have a humptastic day aqua legends!
23.01.2022 Great news everyone! Due to popular demand, we're starting our deep water class on Saturday mornings at the Nightcliff pool again from 5th December. However, because our original lane booking (pre-Covid) has been taken, we have to run it at 8.00 am in the morning. We are still running the deep water class at the Ski Club after that at 9.30 am for those who prefer a bit of a sleep-in. Let us know your thoughts as we value your opinions. We hope to see more of you returning cos we miss you!
22.01.2022 Well done to all those who came to our See Change Body works session yesterday and pushed through their comfort zones It sure was a tough one using the dumbbells to help increase upper body strength and Improving muscular endurance with slower controlled movements. These functional exercises come into play when you find yourself having to carry heavy loads (such as shopping bags or luggage) for more than just a few seconds as well as reducing the onset of osteoporosis as a result of decreasing bone density. The hot humid conditions and hard work certainly made the aqua cardio part so much more inviting. Congratulations everyone and keep up the great work! You deserve the rewards that you work hard for. We're very proud of you!
21.01.2022 Howdy Fitnutterz! Although it's dry season and the water is typically cooler, it's great to see many of you persisting beyond your comfort zone because true growth only happens when we push ourselves beyond our own perceived limitations. There are some scientifically proven advantages to training in cooler water too. 1. It boosts your immune system by increasing white blood cell count because your body is forced to react to changing conditions (keeping you safer from viruse...s and other infections!) 2. It gives you an endorphin boost. More endorphins are released when we're uncomfortable to help us cope with pain. That's also why you feel better after any form of exercise! 3. It increases your circulation, flushing your veins, arteries and capillaries by forcing blood to the surface to warm the extremities. As we get older, this helps us cope better with cold winters so that the seasons become more enjoyable (and none of us are getting any younger!) 4. It burns more calories because the heart must worker harder to keep everything warm during cold water exercise. 5. It reduces stress. Cold water places stress on the body both physically and mentally. Cold water swimmers are shown to be more relaxed and stronger in the face of adversity. Besides, it gives you a great excuse to treat yourself to a small indulgence!! Don't know about you but THAT'S good enough for me!! See you at the pool!! See more
20.01.2022 So, already feel like taking it easy on your New year's resolutions on your health and fitness, and your quest for a stronger body? Wonder Woman says " NO DEAL!" Join me for our usual Sunday morning shallow water session at Nightcliff Pool at 10.00am as I help you become your very own "wonder woman". Remember, a stronger body starts with a stronger mindset! See you there, Fitnutterz!!
19.01.2022 Who said social distancing couldn't be fun?
19.01.2022 Happy New Year aqua legends!! Yes fitnutterz! We are back as of today at Nightcliff pool from 8.00am and at the Ski Club at 9.30am for your fix of deep water. Don't forget to grab the Xmas-New Year timetable from the front counter or save the image from the last post. And remember to stay hydrated everyone. Also another note, while Nikki is away, our "Tap n Pay" service won't work so if u wish to pay electronically, send us a message and we'll send you our bank details. This is preferred for now and it's more Covid-safe. Otherwise cash is always another option too. See u soon!
19.01.2022 This snapshot was sent to us by one of our awesome legends who monitors her fitness with a Fitbit-like device to show how much of a difference a 45 minute aqua class can make. Such dedication, so admirable. This inspired Nikki to write the following:- Once you start training up around 80% of your maximum effort you are in the cardio zone and that is where your body will be burning predominantly carbohydrate for fuel and you will be improving your fitness. The lower intensity ...is the fat burning zone because your body Burns predominantly fat for a fuel. So for 37 minutes you were training at an intensity around or above 80% of your maximum effort. That is fantastic. That means you will be able to train at a higher intensity for a longer period of time because of your increased Fitness therefore burning more energy throughout the whole session compared to if you stayed in the lower intensity brackett. You will be strengthening your heart and it will work more efficiently during the day and pump more oxygen and nutrients around your body. You will have increased energy levels as well as reducing your risk of cardiovascular and many other diseases. Not many people have the mental strength to train as hard as you have here. You are a champion :-) thanks for sharing it See more
18.01.2022 It's the third week of our new See Change Bodyworks Program at the Darwin Ski Club- a unique combination on land-based exercises to improve your strength and bone density, as well as water-based exercises to turbo-charge your cardiovascular fitness and metabolism, finished off with some light stretching to improve flexibility while you cool down in the pool and an ice cold beer or wine to finish off with. With about 20 minutes of both land and water-based training, it may be short but extremely effective...and that's what we need for those with busy lives (which is pretty much all of us!) So come and join us at 5.30 today with your towel, water, sunnies (and yoga mat optional) to do something that your future body will thank you for!
18.01.2022 Thank you to all those lovely people who turned up and shared the afternoon with us and enjoyed the snacks, drinks, sunset and most of all your company. We do this every month so look out for the next one in a few weeks Also someone left their water bottle behind. We'll bring it to our classes this weekend so you can claim it then. Have a fantastic Friday everyone!
17.01.2022 We're running our last AONT intake for this year aimed primarily to benefit people who suffer from mobility conditions such as arthritis and osteoporosis although anyone is welcome These sessions, run by Nikki and Carolyn over five weeks will be held in a warm-water hydrotherapy pool to ease those joints and to improve mobility and overall fitness. This program starts on Monday 26th October from 9.30 am so if you know of anyone who might benefit from this specialised program, please refer them to us. We have information brochures with all the details that you can pass or email onto them. We would be so grateful if you could help us out by spreading the word.
17.01.2022 EXERCISE BOOSTS YOUR MOOD!!! Research suggests that the connection between exercise and mood elevation may be significant. One way that exercise elevates mood and reduces fatigue is through the release of ‘feel good’ hormones and neurotransmitters. Research suggests that physical activity can result in a 5-fold increase in blood endorphin levels. This hormonal response is sometimes referred to as the ‘runners’ high’, although it can occur during other types of long-distance ...activity, such as cycling, swimming (especially AQUA) and paddling. Because exercise increases your level of energy and vitality, it also results in a more positive outlook, and increased life satisfaction. The take-home: Physical activity makes you feel good both during and after your session. Experiment with different durations, intensities and even locations to find out which workouts best boost your mood.
17.01.2022 Come and join us at the Darwin Ski Club for a PITA (pain in the abs) workout today with all-new combos focusing on the lower body from your favourite drill sergeants. Enjoy the serene and breathtaking sunset while soothing into the smooth tones of yelling and loud countdowns!! How can anyone resist? See u there, soldiers!!
15.01.2022 Showing up the Russian Syncronised Swimmimg Team!!
14.01.2022 Welcome to the new normal! Woo Hoo...FINALLY!!! Firstly, a big thank you to Susan for filling in for us while we did our part in saving local wildlife by feeding the starving mozzies. With the restrictions now lifted, we're absolutely "itching" to get started with our new timetable that sees some of our classes return to Nightcliff Pool, starting this Wednesday with a deep water class at 5.30pm, and shallow water classes on Thursday at 5.30pm, Sunday at 10.00am and Monday at... 5.30pm. Classes at the Ski Club are all deep water classes and are run on Tuesday & Wednesday at 5.30pm, and Sat morning 9.30am. We'll be posting the following timetable regularly to help remind everyone (especially ourselves) of what is being run and where so apologies in advance if it seems like nagging :( AQUA TIMETABLE ** (effective TODAY from Tues 9th June 2020) NIGHTCLIFF POOL Mon (shallow): 5.30 pm- 6.15 pm Wed (deep) : 5.30 pm- 6.15 pm Thur (shallow) 5.30 pm- 6.15 pm Sun (shallow) 10.00 am -11.15 am DARWIN SKI CLUB Tue (deep): 5.30 pm - 6.15 pm Wed (deep): 5.30 pm - 6.15 pm Sat (deep) : 9.30 am - 10.15 am We hope you all had a fantastic long weekend, and hope that you're all sobered up for another fun-filled week of aqua. See you at the next class,Welcome back, Nutterz!!
14.01.2022 COURAGE: /krd/ noun noun: courage - The ability to do something that frightens one; bravery.... "They called on all their courage to enter the cold water" strength in the face of pain or grief. "Despite their fatigue, sheer determination and drive pushed these outstanding athletes to achieve greatness.... throughout each HIIT.... with great courage"
13.01.2022 Aqua fitness has so many benefits for everyone and anyone, regardless of your age or gender. This is an example of how it transformed these young fellas. (Poor Nikki has suffered whiplash in her neck and a mild speech impediment in order to get these photos but the doctor said she'll eventually recover. We'll keep praying for you, Nikki!) For our next before-and-after, I'll be interviewing some of our previous participants who have since become cheerleaders for the Dallas Cowboys! Tough job but someone has to do it!
12.01.2022 A big welcome to our newest group of Fitnutterz. Such an incredible turn out yesterday for our 2nd session of special warm water classes for The Joint Movement program that we're running on behalf of Arthritis and Osteoporosis NT. The pool was packed with people dedicated at overcoming mobility problems while getting fit and even smiling much of the time. Keep up the great work everyone!
12.01.2022 We hope everyone had a fantastic and safe Christmas. In case you didn't grab our Christmas timetable from the pool counter, here it is again. Enjoy your week off this week as the Nightcliff pool is closed due to maintenance. Stay safe everyone and have a very happy new year. We'll be back straight after New Years Day to torch those festive calories, tone up those muscles again and smash that hangover (perhaps a poor choice of words if you're actually hungover!) See you in the new year, aqua legends!
11.01.2022 Last minute notice. Due to this afternoons amazing thunderstorm, Nightcliff YMCA has closed down the pool in the interest of safety which means that today's class with Jojo has been cancelled. However, the Ski Club class is still being run for those of you who are still keen. Sorry for the last minute notice everyone
09.01.2022 A fantastic effort yesterday Fitnutterz! Great to see so many of you in the pool yesterday. Just need to perfect our coordination and timing before we compete in the International Aqua synchronized event (I'm sure someone will start it!) Also a reminder that this Thursday after our afternoon class, come join us for our monthly Post-workout Nibbles, drinks and sunset, even if you're a newbie. Just remember to bring something to share and your session will be free!
09.01.2022 Some sound advice to Perfect the Piroette.... Thanks to my student Eliza for demonstrating this important aqua technique
09.01.2022 Well it's been a while but it's time for another post-workout drinks, nibbles and sunset gathering. Reward yourself after a tough and energizing workout with some drinks, nibbles and a bit of a fun get-together with some other legendary aqua athletes while savouring the incredible sunset at Nightcliff. Bring along something to contribute to share, and your class is free- Yep, it's on us, just to say thank you. We kick off after Nikki's shallow class at 6.30pm until you feel like going home (or the next party!!) just outside the pool fence overlooking the cliffs. What better way to end a class! (You won't get THIS at F45 or yoga!!)
09.01.2022 Urgent message Fitnutterz! Today's deep water session has suddenly been cancelled. The pool staff have just notified us that they will shut down the pool because the power has gone out at Nightcliff pool which will affect their use of pool pumps and filters and in turn, possibly create a potential health hazard due to water quality. Please spread this around to our other participants if u can. Sincerest apologies to everyone!
08.01.2022 Happy Friday everyone! Just wanted to say a huge thank you to Carolyn and Susan for filling for Nikki and I while we've been away or working late. You've both done a great job and we're both so appreciative of your help. My fiancee (got to get used to saying that!) should be back sometime this weekend to start running classes next week as per usual. Also, because of that, we will be postponing our monthly coffee & cakes catch-up til next Saturday (July 11th) so that she can enjoy the other thing she loves even more than me- COFFEE!! (And the Hilux....and camping....and......)
08.01.2022 OMG! What a phenomenal turnout today! So incredible to see so many of you at the Ski Club today giving it your all, pushing your limits, increasing your fat-burning metabolism releasing all that stress and pressure and fartleking with such energy, it almost brought tears to my eyes. We are so proud of u all for such an amazing effort! Well done Fartnutterz... I mean Fitnutterz!
08.01.2022 It's Tuesday which means it's time for See Change Bodyworks at the Darwin Ski Club- a unique combination on land-based exercises to improve your strength and bone density, as well as water-based exercises to turbo-charge your cardiovascular fitness and metabolism, finished off with some light stretching to improve flexibility while you cool down in the pool. With less than 12 more weeks til the end of the year, this has got to be one of the best ways to achieve your health and fitness resolutions during this upcoming wet season. So looking forward to see you there and torching those calories together!
07.01.2022 A big shout out to everyone who came along to yesterday's shallow water class. Such was an impressive turn out that we well and truly imposed on the deep end of the pool and its swimmers (sorry guys, but there's more us than YOU!) Also a special welcome to a few newbies who even came along to our post-workout drinks and got to know the rest of Team Aqua. Remember, you're all welcome next time even if u missed the class. Don't be shy. Have an awesome weekend team!
07.01.2022 What a great turn out last week last Thursday. So fantastic to see such an amazing bunch of dedicated athletes who push through the busyness of the daily grind to do something so beneficial for one's own well-being. And if you can't get to the bar, then why not bring the bar(bell) to you? Ladies, sorry I wasn't there but you still can't stop my bad jokes!! I salute you. Well done! Don't forget next Thursday is our monthly sunset, drinks and nibbles at Nightcliff. Keep the date free!
07.01.2022 Hello Fitnutterz, Get on down to Susan’s final Wednesday afternoon Deep Water class at the Ski Club tonight. She will be starting the next phase of her life with the purchase of her new motorhome. This Saturday our newest team member Philippa will be strutting her stuff on the pool deck at the Ski Club at the 9.30am session as part of her assessment for her Aqua Fitness qualifications. There will be no further Ski Club Classes until Saturday May 1st when Nikki and Colin return from holidays. All Nightcliff classes will continue while we are away. No class on Easter Monday but all other Easter classes will be held. See you in the pool legends!
05.01.2022 Happy pre-territory days everyone! Today I have just confirmed that the YMCA will be increasing their fees at Nightcliff pool by 25% as of July 1st which means as much as we hate to do it, we have to increase our prices too. Until July 1st, you can still buy an 11-visit card for the current price. After that, everything will go up by $10. Now because Nikki is still away and the credit card reader only works with her phone, I would strongly suggest paying for your new car...d by direct debit as we may not have enough change for a last minute buying rush. Just show us a screenshot of your transaction this week and we'll write you up a new card at the current price. Here's our banking details: -Nichole Higgins and Colin Leung National Australia Bank BSB 085-949 Account no. 61 489 5064 Thank you everyone for your patience and understanding and for sticking to your fitness commitments. See you in the pool!
05.01.2022 TGIT!! Thank God it's Thursday (and that I'm not dyslexic today cos that would spell something weird!) It's that time of the month again (the one we LOOK forward to!) for our after workout drinks, nibbles and sunset. So come and join us after a tough, challenging but fun shallow water class with the gruesome twosome and then reward yourself and relax those weary muscles with a refreshing drink, delicious snacks and stunning sunset. Feel free to bring along something to share and your class is free! Even if you don't (or heaven forbid...miss the class! ) still come along and let's all chill along like-minded athletes and legends! See u there Fitnutterz!
04.01.2022 Thank you to everyone who came to my first shallow class back at Nightcliff and made it the busiest class we have had since the onset of Covid. It felt like a reunion to see so many keen and happy faces that we haven't seen in months. Thanks again everyone for your birthday wishes, your dedication and commitment. Welcome back everyone!
04.01.2022 Grease Lightning..... COLIN STYLE!!! Outstanding commitment from the Arthritis & Osteoporosis group. Nearing the end of the program with Session 9 of 10 and still a huge attendance rate. LOVIN' IT!!!
04.01.2022 First of all, a massive apology everyone for my tardiness this morning. I'm so very sorry and it will never happen again. On that note, I am so grateful that we have such an amazing group. Thank you so much to Maggie for getting it started and filling in while I got ready. You're ever dependable and so capable. Also thank you for the coffee Meghan, and your half-toastie Kylie. And a very big thank you to ALL of you for your patience and understanding today. Nikki and I are so blessed to have such a beautiful group of people we get to train each week and are so happy to consider as friends. You all rock!!
03.01.2022 Just wanted to say a huge thank you to all you guys wild and patient enough for supporting me at Dolly's for the karaoke grand final. That was one crazy and raucous night but I hope you all had fun- although not sure if they'll ever let me back again! You guys truly rock- even more than I tried to! Looks like drinks are on me! (apologies for those of u who were there but didn't get into the photo- ONE job!!)
03.01.2022 Getting yourself to the pool on those chilly afternoons takes a lot more motivation than it might do in the wet season. Exercising in the cold water helps boost your body's feel-good endorphins to help blast away those blues. Exercise has been found to boost your body serotonin-norepinephrine and stress response to help induce a natural state of calm. That's the motivation some of these Legends used this week!
03.01.2022 To show you beautiful legends how grateful we are for you making Fitnutz H2O such a fun and energetic family, we're holding a Christmas party this Friday at the Darwin Ski Club from 6pm. We're supplying some bottles of wine and bubbly and some food platters as well...and MAYBE some games too. To help us organise this, we would love it if you could tell us if you can or can't make it. Thank you for all your wonderful support throughout such a tumultuous year. We hope to see you there. Merry Christmas legends!!
03.01.2022 A massive thank you to everyone who wished Nikki a happy birthday on the weekend and an even bigger thank you to all the beautiful people who came to the big five-o party and made it such a memorable evening. Yes, the games didn't work out as I expected but thankfully the live music and impromptu performances made it special. Matching ladies togas compliments of the extremely talented Maggie Palfrey! Well done Mags!
02.01.2022 Hi aqua legends. We hope you had a fantastic Easter. Just a reminder that there will be no classes today but there will be the usual classes at Nightcliff on Wednesday and Thursday. Please contact us if you have any questions. Have a great week folks
02.01.2022 Sunny Saturday at the Ski Club with Suzanne fun twisting round the pool
02.01.2022 Happy weekend folks! Today's training will involve a form of HIIT called Fartlek training which involves varying the exercise intensity (nothing to do with creating bubbles from last night's dinner!!) What are the benefits of fartlek training? As it activates both aerobic and anaerobic metabolism, it can boost overall metabolism even more than interval training.... Given that a boost in metabolism is a must for weight loss and also for cellulite removal, this can only be good for both your health and your figure. In fact, it can be said that fartlek training is the most fun anti-cellulite training regime, as it combines both mechanical stimulation and a serious metabolism hike. So let's move our butts, work that cellulite off and Fartlek all over the place. Thank God for outdoor pools!! (BYO gas masks)
01.01.2022 Welcome to the long weekend and the lifting of the last stages of restrictions (I think!!) Have a well-deserved day off, hit the town and have fun everyone. While Nikki takes me out camping this weekend to feed the local mosquitoes, the ever-cheerdul and very talented Susan will run the show for us at the Ski Club on Saturday morning at 9.30 to ensure you all stay fit, motivated and looking great for the dry season. Remember, after Monday we have a new schedule which includes some classes back at Nightcliff (no class this Sunday and Monday, Tues at Ski Club, Wed at Nightcliff). It's posted in the general info part of our Facebook page. Enjoy the weekend folks and stay safe!
01.01.2022 A fantastic effort yesterday from our deep water crew at the Ski Club. Great to see so many smiles, and a friendly competitive drive with those partnered races. Unfortunately, the video I thought I took was in photo mode so these certainly don't do you all justice (yes, I know... ONE JOB, COLIN!!)
