22.01.2022 Today we explore a activity we do with clients who might be struggling with big emotions such as anger or anxiety. At Fit N Well, we recognise the powerful analogies that exercise movements can offer when exploring mental health challenges. We also explain how the activity can be adapted to an office setting. We hope this might spark some new ideas within your practice.

20.01.2022 We are firm believers in the saying 'you practice what you preach'. We are passionate about the role fitness can play in mental health and how exercised based counselling can have a big impact on clients. More importantly, we are passionate about the fact we will not ask our clients to do anything that we would not do or have not done ourselves. We ensure that we are pushing ourselves and practicing the principles of exercised based counselling everyday. For and clients who ...know me, they know my dislike for the assault bike, it hurts me, hurts my soul and wrecks my day every time I have to use it. For that reason, I make sure I use it in most of my workouts. I want to get used to feeling uncomfortable and do my best to get better at it every day. I still dislike it but I feel accomplished when I complete a workout on it. Today was 30 seconds peddling 30 seconds rest for 10 mins... didn't enjoy it. If you are a client of Fit N Well or just are enjoying what we are posting and the concept of exercised based counselling, please share our page. We want to reach as many members of the Adelaide community as we can.
18.01.2022 Today we have a video about failure and how we use it as a tool at Fit N Well. We see Failure as a vital part of exercised based counselling and also as a key part of Life. In this video we talk about how our clients might encounter failure and how they can a process to come back from it. This links to real life and challenges our clients face. We hope this helps our community explore failure and how it can be used to help clients overcome challenges.
15.01.2022 Statistics do not lie, and it is a hard read. - Over 75% of mental health problems occur before the age of 25 - One in seven young people aged 4 to 17 years experience a mental health condition in any given year.... And these are just two statistics, there are many more, some of which are scary and unsettling. What is apparent, is that mental health challenges are on the rise and continue to be a key challenge for the Australia’s community and society. This is part of the reason Fit N Well has come into existence. What is apparent is the need to change and try something different. Fit N Well want to be apart of the solution, to be a part of a changing landscape where we can reduce and have an impact on mental health challenges on young people. We at Fit N Well see it as our responsibility to be apart of the change in Australia starting with the people of south Adelaide.
14.01.2022 Working out builds character. Sometimes we done feeling like moving. We are tired and sore, but we just get it done. At Fit N Well we talk about building character. By thinking and saying 'just get it done' we build resilience, we challenge ourselves and we discover how tough we can be. ... Sometimes you just need to get it done.
13.01.2022 Fresh Starts Most people talk about having a fresh start at different points of their lives. They might do New Year resolutions or take action such as changing schools and jobs. This is an amazing intent and a great idea however, a fresh start without changing anything will result in the same outcome. A person who is anxious and changes work place, will still be anxious. A person who loses control of their anger and changes school may still struggle to control their anger. ... Fit N Well is service that supports change. We support the want for fresh starts but also make focus on the challenges that was the need for a fresh start in the first place. If you know anyone who might need a fresh start and wants to address the challenges that are holding them back, please get in contact with us. #gosouthgolocal #wellbeing

11.01.2022 Lets talk about anger Anger gets a bad rap. Anger is a great emotion, it is a helpful and it is an important feeling to have. However a key aspect is what we do with our anger. Do we control it, or let it control us. As a coach I will often say to athletes lets get a bit grumpy. What I talk about with athletes is controlled and focused anger. I say to athletes, uncontrolled anger is overwhelming can make us lose control. ... At Fit N Well we focus on anger as controllable and helpful. We teach clients to harness their anger and use it well. In the gym we ask them to focus their anger on a lift, get grumpy and then we talk about controlling their anger. This leads to communicating anger and doing this in a positive way with family and friends. We do not want to avoid anger, we do not want to dismiss it, we want to acknowledge it and use it well.
09.01.2022 What is the therapeutic basis for exercise counselling? Exercise counselling is based on many different therapeutic models. One of they key models is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT for short). The main principles of ACT is to: Teach the psychological skills to deal with painful and unhelpful thoughts and feelings effectively in such a way that they have much less impact and influence over you. (ACT mindfully 2021) ... So how does this connect with exercised based counselling? A person stepping up to a weights bar can be having a wide range of unhelpful and negative thoughts... ‘This is too heavy’ ‘I have never lifted this much before’ ‘I’m tired and sore’ ‘What if I get hurt’ Through teaching and understanding ACT that person gain skills in controlling those negative thoughts. ‘This is too heavy’... Becomes ‘This is heavy but I will try my best and I can be proud of that’ ‘I have never lifted this much before’ becomes... ‘I have never lifted this much but this is an opportunity and I am excited to try’ ‘I’m tired and sore’ becomes... ‘I am tired, I have worked hard, I want to push hard and learn more about my limits’ ‘What if I get hurt?’ becomes... ‘I trust myself, my body and my coach. They will not consciously put me in a place where I can get hurt’ In teaching the skills to control unhelpful thoughts in the gym, we also ask clients to apply them to everyday situations such as in school, with friends, or at work.
08.01.2022 Does this remind you of someone you know? "They just need to burn off some energy." "They just struggle when they are angry."... "We have tried lots of counsellors but they didn't work" "I just can't get them to school and I don't know what to do anymore." "Their anxiety has been playing up lately." These are just some of the types of people we work with at Fit N Well. We embrace young people, their stories and the challenges they face. Please get in contact with us if feel someone you know could benefit from our service. Also please continue to share our posts.
08.01.2022 One size does not fit all!!! I was recently talking with a client and their family around our sessions, and they asked how we create our sessions. I said it all depends on the client and what they need. A session will look different for a client with ASD than a client with ADHD. A session with a client who has anxiety will look different than a session with a client who has depression. ... All our sessions are unique, based on goals and challenges of the young adults we work with. We are proud that we take time to design our sessions. with every one being unique and one of a kind.
07.01.2022 It’s not all about counselling Exploring and physical activity, especially in a gym setting can be intimidating for young people. The big machines that might not make sense, the crowds and busyness of a gym can make it less appealing for young people to try gyms out. Fit N Well is not only a counselling service, but it is also a safe place for young people to learn and experiment with exercise. Because the sessions are one on one in a supervised and safe environment, clients... are able to safely explore fitness, taking things at their own pace and learning how to use a gym safely. That’s what makes Fit N Well so unique, safe work outs from a trained Strength and conditioning coach and counselling from an experienced Social Worker. #gosouthgolocal #headspace #headspaceaustralia #beyondblue #aasw #aaswsa #blackdog
06.01.2022 One of our favourite tools of the trade, simple, cheep and anyone can use them. Great fun to remind you of your childhood.
06.01.2022 Lay down on a couch and talk about your wellbeing??? How about laydown on a bench? meaningful conversations can happen in many different ways and places. at Fit N Well we believe meaningful conversations can happen while laying on a bench, standing in a squat rack or sitting on a weightlifting platform. ... the main thing is people feel connected and comfortable. At Fit N Well we create a welcoming environment for clients to chat in environments away from a traditional counselling setting.
06.01.2022 Something to make you laugh today but also a good message. Often we find failure to be bad or something to be avoided, but it is something to learn from. I have been working out in gyms for over 20 years and failure is a constant. However, I see it as a way to improve, to look at what needs to change to get better. Clients who come to Fit N Well will be exposed to new movements and failure will occur. But this is supported and encouraged as failure shows they are trying something new and learning.
05.01.2022 Over the next few weeks, I would like to take the time to talk about the principles and values that underpin our work at Fit N Well. The picture below is a visual representation of the values we base our service on. When Fit N Well first came into existence, we were not only thought about the service we wanted, but also where we wanted it to fit within the community of Adelaide, and the therapeutic community. We discussed what contributions Fit N Well could provide and what l...ifestyle values we have to empower our clients with. Therefore, this diagram not on represents how we want to run our service, but shows the ethics of our business and the messages we want to send to the community. Over the next few days, we will break down each level, what its social meaning is and how we implement it at Fit N Well. Please continue to like, share and engage with us and our page as we continue to share Fit N Well’s vision as a business, but also our vision to support all young people in the community as best as we can.
03.01.2022 "That didn't feel like counselling" Is a phrase we often hear after a session, but it's the basis of Fit N Well 's philosophy and a core value. We take a different approach to counselling where the therapeutic approach is subtle and built around the gym workouts we do. ... As a result, clients may feel different after a session at Fit N Well. They may not feel like they do after a traditional counselling session, but they would have learnt therapeutic strategies through the work out. We are proud to say not only are we the only exercise based counselling service in Australia, but we also are different from traditional counselling services
