20.01.2022 Common Training Mistake... The DB skull crusher is a great exercise to isolate the triceps with minimal deltoid activation. In this demo, our amazing model @cley_1977, shows what NOT to do in the first 3 reps.... To isolate the triceps properly, your elbow should remain directly above your shoulder and in these first 3 reps you can see how the elbow moves forward and there is more shoulder activation. The last 3 reps of the video show how the elbows should remain stacked on top of the shoulders, while the forearm moves the weight towards the ears. This will give you the most bang for your buck and your triceps may feel like they are on fire . 18.01.2022 I've had a lot of enquiries lately asking if FITREP will do any High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) classes. The answer is NO, here's why... Warning... Long post Research shows that HIIT can increase your aerobic and anaerobic fitness as well as increasing lean muscle tissue and burning excess body fat so why does it suck?... Firstly, the commercial variations of HIIT that are available aren't really HIIT. The intensities, training types, work/rest timing, loads and class duration do not match up with any of the validated research. Secondly, HIIT is predominantly for trained individuals who have a good training base and can physically perform the exercises at the intensity required for true results. Most people you see in your local HIIT class just aren't getting their heart rate high enough to get true HIIT results. Thirdly, the exercises used in most commercial HIIT classes to ensure your heart rate is high, will be large compound movements usually performed dynamically to maximize heart rate. This is great to spike heart rate, but not so great for joints that have been sitting on the couch for six months. For most people with a low training age, 4 to 5 HIIT sessions per week will probably lead to joint and other musculoskeletal injuries. As I said at the start of this post, research shows HIIT can be super effective and can lead to some great results, but like with most training modalities, it needs to be structured into your training plan at appropriate intervals to achieve the results you want. You shouldn't just run to get fit, you shouldn't just do weightlifting if you want to get strong, you shouldn't just do HIIT training to the exclusion of everything else. 15.01.2022 Misinformation Monday! On the surface of it, this statement sounds reasonable but let's look at the specifics of it... The recommended dietary intake of calcium is at minimum 1000mg. So let's say that due to bioavailability, you need 1500mg of calcium from milk to get the same amount of calcium from these other sources. ... Let's compare macronutrients using almonds as an example. Milk at 1500mg calcium Calories = 942 Protein = 46g Fat = 46g Carbs = 83g Almond at 1000mg calcium Calories = 2392 Protein = 78g Fat = 219g Carbs = 19g So even though they are more bioavailable, relying on these foods as your sole calcium source will completely ruin your macronutrient and calorie balance.
