19.01.2022 Trigger warning: this article discusses domestic violence and financial abuse. Our CEO, Donna de Zwart, was featured in an article in last week's body+soul magazine discussing the pervasive nature of financial abuse and it's impact on women's safety and economic independence. 18.01.2022 We stand for Equal Pay for Equal Work. Today marks 59 additional days from the end of the previous financial year, the average amount of days a women must work to earn the same income as men earned that year. Today is Equal Pay Day and the national gender pay gap remains stable and unacceptable, at 14%. As we move through these health and economic crises, we must be louder than ever in our cry for equal recognition of the value of work done by women. ... When the GFC hit, Australia saw a 2% broadening of the pay gap, which took a decade to recede to where it is today. We cannot afford complacency in the face of our first recession in almost 30 years. It will be a disaster for the economy and a calamity for Australian women. - Libby Lyons, Director of Workplace Gender Equality Agency. The onus should not be on individuals to struggle against entrenched industry standards in order to experience fair pay. To achieve equality we must advocate and act collectively to improve the status-quo. We are all empowered to make positive change through learning proactively, listening compassionately and acting inclusively. Let’s keep up the fight for equal pay together!
15.01.2022 The 2020 theme for NAIDOC week is Always Was, Always Will Be. These words are a kind of heartbeat. Whether sung out by a marching crowd or uttered in the walls of parliament, they are the steady undercurrent of truth to our hearts, minds, conversations and actions. We hear them and we feel them. ... At Fitted for Work we pay our respects to the traditional owners of the land and all elders past, present and emerging. We honour our Indigenous sisters and their rich cultivation of land, community, art and story. No matter where you are, everyone can experience something valuable for NAIDOC week. There are Zoom workshops to attend, books to read, films to watch and endless other opportunities to learn and celebrate that is Always Was and Always Will be Aboriginal Land. 11.01.2022 Our referral partners, Project Respect, are holding a virtual fundraiser this Friday. Project Respect support women in and trafficked into the sex industry in Victoria. Please come along for an impactful and eye-opening discussion on modern slavery in Australia. The subject of human trafficking, slavery and slavery-like practices, and victim/survivor support is one that requires more discussion and both Fiona McLeod AO SC and Professor Jennifer Burn are distinguished advocate...s in this space and have valuable insights into an issue that frankly, we could all know more about. Book your ticket today and join us in supporting Project Respect and the essential work they do to support women who are involved in the sex industry, including women who have been trafficked for sexual exploitation and who will otherwise find it very difficult to access support. https://lnkd.in/ggVW7ku

06.01.2022 Wear It Purple day - a day to celebrate & support young LGBTIQ+ people and continue to foster safe spaces for them to express who they are and find power in their identity. To be authentic should not mean to be at risk of discrimination and danger. Starting at a new school, going clothes shopping, walking down the street, so many moments that should be simple, safe, joyous, demand focused evaluation. It is necessary to assess and wonder, ... "is this safe?", "what pronoun should I use?", "should we not hold hands here?". LGBTIQ+ people navigate this landscape of risk daily. It is draining and sometimes deadly. LGBTIQ+ people have the highest suicide rate of any population. Poor data collection around gender and sexual preference means that the true rates of suicide are even higher. What makes a HUGE difference to kids is understanding and affirmation from a supportive adult. We recognise this year that many young people are locked down with people that don't support them, cut off from friends and other environments. Many are having to 'press pause' on coming out or living freely. One HUGE yet small action you could make is to reach out to a young person in your friendship group, or extended family to be that supportive adult. It’s not up to us to ‘out’ young people but letting them know you love them and are up for a confidential chat if and when they need it could be life-changing! As Wear It Purple Day comes to a close, remember that the choice to be compassionate is always open to you.
