25.01.2022 Hi Royboys and Roygirls Pete Carter, author of the recently released Fitzroy’s Fabulous Century: The 100 Greatest Victories, 1897-1996, is grateful to those who have already bought copies of his book. However, he still has plenty of available copies of FFC and in keeping with the end-of-financial-year spirit, has reduced the book’s price from $30 to $25 (including postage). You can buy a copy at http://fitzroypete.com.au/buy-books/, where Pete has other EOFY offers listed. If you’ve previously bought a copy of FFC and want to purchase another, please email Pete and he’ll do a deal for you. Cheers Pete

24.01.2022 Today our time machine turns the clock back to the 1984 VFL Season, where Fitzroy hosts Footscray, in the Round 4 clash at the Junction Oval. It is a windy day, so conditions are far from ideal. Fitzroy have started the season disastrously, losing their first 3 games.... Footscray have fared much better and have bought up 2 wins in the first 3 games. Fitzroy is definately under the pump and are underdogs (pardon the pun) The first quarter is an even affair as the dogs head to the first break 4 points in front. Fitzroy jump out of the blocks quickly as the second quarter commenced, kicking an unprecedented 7 goals to 2, heading into the main break 4 goals in front. Michael Conlan is proving a menace around the goals for Fitzroy and Gary Pert is keeping Footscray Full Forward Simon Beasley in check. Grant Lawrie is providing great drive from his customary position at half back, Leigh Carlson is ruling the roost on the wing and Matt Rendell, in his first game of the year, is fairing well in his ruck position, out pointing his Footscray counterpart Andrew Purser. The third quarter is a carbon copy of our second quarter, as we kick 8 goals to Footscray’s 2, as we take a 58 point lead into the final quarter. Fitzroy take the foot off the pedal in the final quarter to kick 4 goals to 2, to run out easy winners by 70 points. Our tough Half Forward Flanker, Michael Conlan, kicks a career high 10 goals to gain best on ground honours and 3 Brownlow votes. On a sad note, ruckman Matt Rendell dislocates his shoulder and will miss the next 6 weeks. Final Scores Fitzroy 21.14.140 Footscray 9.16.70 Fitzroy Goalkickers Michael Conlan 10 Ross Thornton 3 Mark Scott 2 Tim Pekin 2 And singles to Paul Roos Bernie Quinlan Leon Harris Doug Barwick Fitzroy Possessions Leigh Carlson 26 Grant Lawrie 22 Tim Pekin 21 (in his first game) Mathew Rendell 21 Garry Wilson 21 Go lions https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8pjrJap-a70

23.01.2022 A big shout out to all our Facebook followers with good eyesight to see if you can read the scoreboard on the attached photo, does it say the team Fitzroy is playing is South Melbourne ? If it is against the Swans, it’s either 1977 Round 17 or 1978 Round 4 at the Junction Oval. Thanks for all your help.... Brenden

23.01.2022 Back in the late 70’s, the Fitzroy Football Club had cheerleaders that used to perform at the Junction Oval. They were called the lionesses. We were the first club in the then VFL to have our own cheerleaders.... Not too sure if the lionesses were sponsored by IOOF, who were our sponsor in 1977 and 1978. Maybe former Fitzroy President Frank Bibby, who was an executive with IOOF, organised the sponsorship for the girls? Enjoy a trip down memory lane with the Lionesses. Brenden

23.01.2022 Today we crank back the time machine to the first round of the 1993 season, where Fitzroy meet the eventual runner-ups Carlton at Optus Oval. Fitzroy finish the 1992 season in a creditable 10th position, with a 9-13 win loss record. Fitzroy enter season 1993 in another pressure cooker situation, fighting for its survival once again.... Fitzroy are first out of the blocks and carry a 8 point lead into the first break. The second quarter belongs to Carlton, as they power to a 14 point lead into the major break. Brett Stephens and Paul Roos are holding up the sandbags in defence and Paul Broderick, Matty Dundas and Matty Armstrong are picking up plenty of the ball around the packs. Doc Wheildon is presenting himself well up forward. Carlton increase its lead from 14 points, to 4 goals at the last break siren. Fitzroy are up against it (as usual) and must pull a rabbit out of its hat to claim a victory. Alastair Lynch and Paul Broderick kick early goals to send our Fitzroy on its way. Carlton then kick a couple of goals and Fitzroy respond in kind. With minutes to go, the scores are level and the pressure is on. Matty Armstrong kicks a rushed ball forward and our unmarked first gamer from WA, Michael Dunstan, finds himself alone, shrugging off opponent Stephen Silvagni and takes a mark 35 metres from goal on a slight angle. The pressure on Michael to convert is immense. Can he goal and put our Roys a goal in front? No problems! His kick changes direction slightly in mid flight and kicks truly!! We are 1 solidary goal in front!! Can our roys hold on in the final minute? Carlton then quickly rush the ball in a forward motion and in an act of desperation, Jason Baldwin smothers Carlton’s Ron De Iulio’s kick and prevents a score equaling goal. Our royboys soak up the following seconds and capture the win by Dunstan’s goal kicked a minute before. Fitzroy are victorious by 6 points. Final scores: Fitzroy 17.16.118 Carlton 17.10.112 Fitzroy Goalkickers Darren Wheildon and Michael Dunstan 3 each Peter Sartori and Paul Broderick 2 And singles to Paul Roos, Marcus Seecamp, Alastair Lynch, Jim Wynd, Mark Zanotti, Brett Stephens and Matthew Armstrong 1 Leading Possessions Matthew Armstrong 27 Matthew Dundas 25 Paul Broderick 23 Paul Roos 22 Brett Stephens 22 Jim Wynd 22 Alastair Lynch 21 Another great win from the under siege Fitzroy Football Club! 23.01.2022 With regards to our post last Thursday, the attached photo of the lioness cheerleaders was taken at the completion of the reserves game: Round 1 1977 V Richmond on Saturday the 2nd of April at the Junction Oval. This was the first appearance of the lioness cheerleaders, the first match day showing our first sponsor IOOF. The roys had a great win this day to welcome IOOF aboard.... Enjoy the highlights of this historic day. Brenden https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5QiMB918-NE

23.01.2022 Today our time machine takes us back to season 1992. It’s the Round 11 clash where our Fitzroy take on the might of the Carringbush at Princes Park. Fitzroy are sitting on 5 wins and 3 losses (and 2 byes) and Collingwood are sitting on 7 wins and 2 losses (and a bye), so the 2 teams are evenly matched.... This is a momentous game as our former champion Full Back, Gary Pert, lines up for Collingwood against us for the first time. The first quarter is a dour affair, as Fitzroy kick the only goal for the quarter and go into the first break 6 points in front. Fitzroy jump out of the blocks in the second quarter and kick 5 goals (the most we will kick in a quarter for the whole day) to Collingwood’s 3, to go into the main break with a handy 20 point lead. Brett Stephens is doing an admiral job mopping up down back. Matthew Dundas and Jim Wynd are proving to be thorns in the side of the pies with their tenacity around the ball. Ross Lyon is doing a great job doing his best to hold the ball in our forward line. Fitzroy outscore the pies in the third quarter again kicking 4 goals to 3, to take a commanding 27 point lead. Will today be the day that we hold on and beat our arch enemies? In a complete reversal of form, Collingwood continually pump the ball forward in the last quarter in a blitzkrieg. Fitzroy defenders are under pressure for the first time today and are on the back foot. Collingwood kick their 7th goal for the quarter, the last of their goals complimentary of Gary Pert, who put the pies 3 points in front. The Fitzroy crowd are in stunned silence. We have been in front all day and are facing defeat with minutes to go. It’s not looking good for the royboys. Fitzroy’s never day say die spirit is being stretched to the limit. With a minute to go, half forward Jeremy Guard is paid a mark in front of the Hawthorn stand. His long bomb hits a big pack of players and Paul Roos is first to read the ball as it spills to the ground. He scoops the ball up in a maze of players and snaps accurately with his left foot and goals, putting us 3 points in front. Can we hold on and win? Our magnificent Fitzroy hold on for the last 10 seconds and are victorious by 3 points. What a fantastic win!!! Poetic justice as Fitzroy would been unlucky to lose, after being in front all day. Final Scores: Fitzroy 13.14.92 Collingwood 13.11.89 Fitzroy Goalkickers Alastair Lynch 3 Jeremy Guard 3 Paul Abbott 1 Matthew Dundas 1 Dean Harding 1 Stephen Paxman 1 Brett Stephens 1 Ross Lyon 1 Paul Roos 1 Leading Possessions Jim Wynd 27 Matthew Dundas 22 Brett Stephens 22 Ross Lyon 19 Paul Roos 18 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BwDKwa9goOU

21.01.2022 The Lionesses. Another group of ladies that contributed so much to our great club over the years. Holding mid week functions and raising money for the Fitzroy FC.... They had many top line guests to assist them in their support our wonderful club. Fantastic days led by the wonderful Jean Chaundy (RIP) and Barbara Hardy (and others).

20.01.2022 On Monday the 24th August we heard the sad news of the passing of Bill Stephen, which took place on Sunday evening, after experiencing poor health over recent times. All long time Fitzroy and Brisbane Lions supporters over many years have admired the skill and ability of Bill as a player, joining the club from Thornbury CYMS in 1947 and played 162 games (for 4 goals), winning the Fitzroy FC Best and Fairest Award in 1950 (Alan Ruthven of our Fitzroy won the Brownlow Medal in ...this year) and 1954. He also played 14 games for Victoria. Bill became playing coach in 1955 to 1957, returned as Non Playing Coach from 1965 to 1970 and 1979 to 1980. Bill coached the club for a record 11 years. We made the finals in 1979 (our first finals series since 1960) and kicked a record score and a winning margin of 190 points against Melbourne at Waverley in 1979, which is still a club and VFL/AFL record Bill had a great record in coaching and the younger players loved him for his coaching. The club was short in members and finance, but Bill developed some outstanding players for the club. Many of our players referred to him for his work, coaching and interest in their work, as Mr Fitzroy, over the years. He also penned the words to our theme song (with assistance of other Fitzroy Players on the train) on our end of season trip to Western Australia in 1952. As Football Manager, I had the pleasure of working with him in the coaches box on match days and he was a wonderful man to work with. In 2001, the Brisbane Lions had a large function called the TEAM OF OUR CENTURY and Bill was selected in the back pocket. In 2012, Bill was selected into the Brisbane Lions HALL OF FAME. Bill was always available to assist me with interviews in many of our functions and I thank him for all of what he has done for our Historical Society. Bill has been a wonderful player and coach and the teaching of skill training to all of our past players under his tenure has been second to none. And Bill has been a person to give us advice with the various memorabilia and what cabinets we should use for our display. We will always appreciate the friendship, kindness and his excellent support to the FITZROY BRISBANE LIONS HISTORICAL SOCIETY. Rest In Peace William (Bill) Stephen ARTHUR.J. 18.01.2022 Today we turn back the time machine to the 1981 Season, where the reigning premiers Richmond take on the Fitzroy side, who have taken the wooden spoon in the previous season, at the MCG in Round 17. Richmond has just destroyed the Hawthorn side in the previous weeks fixture, defeating them by 45 points at the Princes Park Oval. On the other hand, Fitzroy have just come off a win, defeating last years finalists North Melbourne, by 34 points at VFL Park Waverley, ending Malcolm...Continue reading

17.01.2022 Good afternoon royboys and roygirls. Fitzroy Football Club’s Halley’s Comet came in the form of Koroit Football Club’s Mark Smirky Dwyer, who burst on to the VFL scene for the first time on Saturday the 5 July 1986 (round 15) at VFL Park Waverley, in our clash against Carlton, exactly 1 month shy of his 22nd birthday ... Carlton have just come off a loss on the Tuesday night prior in the Fosters Cup Grand Final, defeated by Hawthorn by 5 goals. Dwyer’s 28 possession first game effort, including 2 goals 1 behind, earned him a Brownlow vote. It was also North Melbourne recruit Brendan Ryan’s solitary game for Fitzroy, after transferring mid season from the kangaroos. Fitzroy FC won Mark’s first game by 6 points in a hard fought clash, with Richard Osborne kicking 4 goals 5 behinds for the Roy’s , on a rain sodden and heavy VFL Park surface. In Smirky’s next 7 home and away games, he polled 9 more Brownlow votes. Mark also played in our three finals in his debut year. Mark played 2 more senior games for Fitzroy in the following year and was then traded to the St Kilda FC for the 1988 VFL Season, where he managed 1 game for the saints. All Fitzroy supporters will remember our Halley’s Comet in the form of Mark Dwyer. Can anyone else think of any other Fitzroy FC, Brisbane Bears FC or Brisbane Lions FC players, who can rival Mark Dwyer’s quick elevation to fame? A brief VFL career did Mark have, but what a fantastic impact he had!! Brenden

16.01.2022 Today we turn our time machine back to 1995 to the Round 8 clash at Football Park, where the Adelaide Crows host our FItzroy. Fitzroy are sitting at 1 win from our first 7 games. We have brought up our first win a fortnight ago, defeating St Kilda at VFL Park Waverley.... Adelaide have won 3 games to this stage. Bernie Quinlan has taken over the reigns as Fitzroy coach. Our prodigal son has returned. The first quarter is an even affair and Fitzroy take a 9 point lead. The second quarter is much the same as we move to the main break 8 points in front. Simon Atkins and Brad Boyd are picking up plenty of possessions in the midfield. Little known forward Adam McCarthy, a recruit from North Melbourne, in his first year and 4th game for the roys, is picking up plenty of the ball. Adelaide fair better in the third quarter, kicking 4 goals to 2 and take a 8 point lead at the last change. Andrew Jarman, David Brown and Nick Pesch are dominating around the ground. Things are looking ominous for our lions. The heat is on. As I remember watching this game at home, a large hush come over the crowd at Football Park. Fitzroy flicks a switch and start pumping the ball forward. The crows are stunned and cannot get anywhere near the ball. Fitzroy are attacking the ball in waves. We are alight. In an unprecedented quarter, Fitzroy kick an amazing 9 goals (2 more than they have kicked for the first 3 quarters) and the crows kick 2. Fitzroy pull off an unlikely 33 point win, to bring up their first (and only win) at Football Park. I remember hoards of Adelaide supporters streaming out of the ground early in the last quarter. Everyone at Fitzroy will remember this win in the annals of time. A truly remarkable win against all odds. Extremely Fitzroy like...backs against the wall!! Final Scores Fitzroy 15.9.99 Adelaide 9.12.66 Fitzroy Goalkickers Adam McCarthy 3 Chris Johnson 3 Brad Boyd 2 Jarrod Molloy 1 Danny Morton 1 Doug Hawkins 1 James Manson 1 Jeremy Guard 1 Peter Bird 1 Jason Baldwin 1 Leading Possessions Adam McCarthy 27 Simon Atkins 25 Doug Hawkins 22 Brad Boyd 22 Danny Morton 19 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hwwmzFPv6K4

13.01.2022 Today we turn out time machine back to Season 1994. Fitzroy enter the season full of confidence, having finished the previous season, 1993, with a creditable 10-10 win loss record, finishing in 11th position. It’s been our best season since 1989, for win-loss, when we finished in 6th position, with a 12-10 win loss record.... We lose our first game in 1994 to Collingwood at Victoria by 11 points. Today we look at the Round 2 game against Essendon at Princes Park. Essendon have norrowly defeated West Coast by 3 points at the MCG in the season opener and are coming off an unlikely premiership the year before. Tim Watson of Essendon has just run through his 300th game banner and the dons are confident of a win against us. The first quarter is a close affair as Essendon head to quarter time 4 points in front. The second quarter is much the same as Essendon head into the first change 11 points in front. Paul Salmon’s height at Full Forward is causing problems for his undersized Fitzroy Full Back Simon Hawking and is looking ominous. Brad Boyd, Jason Baldwin and Matthew Armstrong are picking up plenty of possessions and Paul Roos is reigning supreme at Centre Half Back. Fitzroy Forward John McCarthy and Midfielder Anthony McGregor clash heads in a sickening collision. The result of this collision results in McCarthy leaving the field with a depressed fracture of his cheekbone (and ultimately misses the next 5 weeks) and does not return to the field. McGregor goes off temporarily, but soon returns to the field. Fitzroy start the third quarter in a blaze of glory and kick 6 goals to 2, to head to the last break 15 points ahead. Brad Boyd is burning around the packs and is still accumulating possessions at will. Can Fitzroy hold on and beat the reigning premiers? The final quarter is a nip and tuck affair as goals are traded willingly. Ross Lyon, who has worked his way into the game, takes one of the marks of the season. Goals to Jimmy Wynd, Ross Lyon, first gamer (and future 3 time premiership player) Chris Johnson and 2 goals to Anthony McGregor, see the lions kick 5 goals to steady and win by 13 points in a memorable win for our football club. Final Scores: Fitzroy 17.10.122 Essendon 14.15.99 Fitzroy Goalkickers Brad Boyd 3 Jeff Hogg 2 Matthew Armstrong 2 Anthony McGregor 2 Michael Dunstan 2 John McCarthy 2 Chris Johnson 1 Jason Baldwin 1 Jim Wynd 1 Ross Lyon 1 Fitzroy Leading Possessions Brad Boyd 37 (and 3 Brownlow Votes) Paul Roos 30 Matthew Armstrong 24 (and 2 Brownlow Votes) Jason Baldwin 23 Kieren Sporn 19 Mark Zanotti 14 (and 1 Brownlow Vote) Considering the amount of personnel we lost in the previous year, a truly amazing win!! 12.01.2022 It is with deep regret that the Fitzroy Football Club mourn the passing of former player Ivan Smith, aged 86. Ivan was recruited to the Fitzroy Football Club in 1956 from the Robinvale Football Club in the Sunraysia Football League. Ivan represented the Fitzroy Football Club 4 times in the 1956 VFL Season.... Ivan’s VFL Football career was cut short by his appointment in the Victorian Police Force. Ivan’s involvement with Fitzroy Football Club was reignited in his secretary role with the Fitzroy Football Club Past Players Association for nearly 40 years. Ivan’s personal and easy going nature in the past players association enabled him to reacquaint many Fitzroy, Brisbane Bears and Brisbane Lions past players, back to the club. We are truly greatful of the time and effort that Ivan displayed to ensure that the family club culture at the Fitzroy, Brisbane Bears and Brisbane Lions Football Clubs, continues to this day. Vale Ivan Smith, a true warrior of the Fitzroy Football Club. You will be sorely missed by all. A true Royboy. Arthur Wilson (OAM) and the committee of the Fitzroy Brisbane Lions Historical Society.

10.01.2022 We are finally back!! The Fitzroy-Brisbane Lions Historical Society invites you to join us at our first official function for almost 18 months, to be held on Thursday 29 April 2021 at the Fitzroy Bowling Club (578 Brunswick Street) commencing at 7pm. We will be joined by a couple of famous Fitzroy names John Murphy and Ross Thornton who will share stories from their playing days with the Club.... A Club Hall of Famer, Murphy played 214 games with Fitzroy from 1967-77, over which time he claimed five best and fairest awards (1968,70-71, 73, 77), twice led the Lions’ goal-kicking (1971, 76), and Captained the side for five seasons (1973-77). Thornton played 146 games in a decade with Fitzroy from 1980-89, after first arriving at the Club in 1975 and then proving himself with Prahran in the VFA. He won Fitzroy’s best and fairest award in 1984 and was part of the club’s famous 1989 Reserves premiership. He now plays a critical off-field role with current-day Brisbane Lions, as the Victorian representative on the Club’s Board of Directors. We are thrilled to invite members to this much anticipated event, however advise that attendance is limited to just 85 guests due to COVID restrictions. Bookings are compulsory and will be taken on a first-in, first-served basis until capacity is reached, so please email [email protected], or call the Brisbane Lions Melbourne Office on 03 8850 5602 to reserve your spot at your earliest convenience. Entry is still just $10 for 2021 Historical Society members, and $15 for non-members. Payments can still be made at the door on the night of the event. Meals will be available at reasonable prices from 5.30pm onwards. We look forward to seeing you then! Arthur Wilson and the committee of the Fitzroy Brisbane Lions Historical Society

08.01.2022 It’s with deep regret that the Fitzroy Brisbane Lions Historical Society mourn the passing of past players Arnie Bench (passed away 1 October 2020) and Ron Bickley (passed away 11 October 2020) We pass on our condolences to their families and friends and thank them for their service to the Fitzroy Football Club. This leaves Tom Magee (91 years 239 days) and Eddie Goodger (91 years 218 days) as the 2 oldest living Fitzroy Football Club players.... Rest In Peace Arnie and Ron. Arthur Wilson and the committee of the Fitzroy Brisbane Lions Historical Society.

06.01.2022 Good afternoon Royboys and Roygirls. If you went to the footy in the 1970s and 1980s, you would of seen plenty of duffel coats, with a player name and number on the back, plus badges and player names. Thanks to Stevie Janevski for supplying photos of his duffel coat, paying homage to ex Fitzroy and Victorian defender Laurie Serafini (Lorenzo was also a director of the Brisbane Lions).... Does anyone else have any photos to share of their Fitzroy (or Brisbane) apparel that they wore or still wear to the footy? Brenden

03.01.2022 Today the time machine clicks back to 1986. The last year that our club would grace the field in finals action. Today we turn our minds back to the Round 9 fixture at Victoria Park, where we host the Essendon Football Club.... Fitzroy have started the season well, winning 5 out of the first 8 games. Essendon have faired slightly better, winning 6 out of the first 8 games. So the 2 sides are evenly matched. The first quarter is a scrappy affair as both sides register 1 goal each, as Essendon head to the first break 1 solitary point in front. Bernie Quinlan goes down early in the first quarter with an Achilles injury, which rules him out for the for the next 2 weeks. This long standing injury that he has played with certainly curtails him for the rest of the year and hastens his retirement after our season ending preliminary final. Essendon slightly has the better of us in the second quarter, kicking 5 goals to 4, heading into the major break 6 points in front. Jim Wynd, in his first game for Fitzroy is performing admirably and Graham Osborne, Doug Barwick and Michael Conlan are continually pumping the ball forward. Gary Keane is providing a tall target up front, filling in for the injured Bernie Quinlan. We are missing the drive of Fullback Gary Pert, who is out injured for this game (the only game he misses for the 1986 Season. Our backman are covering the loss of Pert quite admirably. The third quarter is a carbon copy of the first 2 quarters. Close. Both sides kick 4 goals and Essendon slightly improves its margin in front by 7 points. Will the last quarter prove to be the same as the first 3 quarters? Time will tell. As mentioned in previous games we have highlighted, Fitzroy’s never say day spirit is called upon again. Fitzroy suddenly flicks a switch and kicks an unprecedented 9 goals, to Essendon’s 3 behinds, to run out easy winners by 45 points. Richard Osborne, unsighted for the first 3 quarters, kicks a massive 5 goals to lead our Fitzroy to a famous win. Everybody lifts in the last quarter and contributes to a memorable win. Final Scores Fitzroy 18.7.115 Essendon 10.10.70 Fitzroy Goalkickers Richard Osborne 5 Gary Keane 5 Michael Conlan 5 Jim Wynd 1 Paul Roos 1 Doug Barwick 1 Fitzroy Leading Possessions Michael Conlan 22 Graham Osborne 22 Doug Barwick 21 Leon Harris 19 Dean Turner 17 Jamie Cooper 17 Go lions https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=P5Jwv3LDTMc
