15.01.2022 A Fitzroy Crossing business owner says he's concerned local teenagers have turned breaking the law into a game. The concerns come after a group of children used... an allegedly stolen car to ram the doors of the local IGA, damaged the nearby service station and the police station on Saturday. The group is believed to have posted footage of the incidents to social media before they were apprehended by police. Leedal chief executive and business organiser John Rodrigues says local kids are beginning to treat damaging property and stealing cars as a competition. "They seem to want to see who does more damage in Broome, Derby, Fitzroy, Halls Creek or Kununurra as a bit of a game at the moment," he said. "Somebody's going to get hurt ... just stop this while [you] can." Mr Rodrigues will now have to foot a $12,000 repair bill, and the group have been dealt with by Fitzroy Crossing Police.

11.01.2022 On Friday the 30th of October Garnduwa held the first ever Fitzroy Youth Hub Family Halloween Extravaganza! With support from the Yiramalay/Wesley Studio Schoo...l, the local police Kimberley District - WA Police Force, Marra Worra Worra and the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley, the Fitzroy Valley team threw a fantastic night with over 60 kids coming down to join in the fun. Some of the friendly police officers from the community came down to run a Halloween balloon darts competition. They had the kids in fits of laughter & the line was long all night. After kids had their faces painted and scary fake tattoos put on by our deadly volunteers, they were directed to our spooky photo booth. When the Ghostbuster song played, everyone had to stop what they were doing and find the water balloon stations to catch our signature ghost of the night (Scary Sam!) We were happy to see so many different kids of all ages come down and participate, as well as some of our local parents and carers too. Thank you to the staff from Yiramalay, who travelled with over 20 students & volunteered their time to support the coordination of the event. Happy Halloween you mob!

07.01.2022 The State Government is seeking feedback on the future of the Fitzroy River catchment in the Kimberley with today's release of the Fitzroy River water discussion paper. The discussion paper, which is open for comment until May 31, 2021, outlines approaches being considered by the State Government to protect the Fitzroy River and to sustainably manage the water resources in the catchment. The State Government has heard a range of opinions about future development in the catchm...ent and the management of water resources through consultation undertaken in 2018 and 2019. Outlined in the paper are several key topics and management approaches for more focused discussion and feedback that relate to managing water and development in the Fitzroy River catchment. It will form the basis of another series of face-to-face discussions with traditional owner groups and stakeholders in the Fitzroy catchment. Previous face-to-face discussions were delayed due to COVID-19 restrictions. The paper is an important part of the State Government delivering on its commitments to: * create the Fitzroy River National Park, which will extend the Geikie Gorge National Park along the Fitzroy River to the north and along the Margaret River; * develop a management plan for the Fitzroy River to ensure the health of the river and provide a basis for sustainable economic development; and * not allow the Fitzroy River or its tributaries to be dammed and deliver a Fitzroy water allocation plan. Given it is important to ensure people have time to consider and share their views on the matter of water allocation and use in the Fitzroy, the paper will be open for public comment into the new year until the end of May 2021. No final decisions have been made in relation to any option or approach proposed in the discussion paper. At the conclusion of this public comment period, the State Government will consider all feedback received and prepare a draft Fitzroy River water allocation plan. The discussion paper and consultation hub can be found at https://consult.dwer.wa.gov.au//managing-water-in-the-fitz
