14.01.2022 My first book "Five Egyptian Pounds: the story of George Said" was launched almost exactly a year ago to this day during Cultural Diversity Week in March 2015. The year has been exciting and hectic, with presentations, sales, writing workshops, media interviews and historical displays, capped off with an appearance on SBS news. We will soon be part of a historical film being made by Multicultural Arts Victoria. My book is now available for loan in numerous libraries throughou...t Melbourne as well as in Auckland. "Five Egyptian Pounds" tells the story of my family's migrations to many lands, the rise of Arab nationalism after the creation of Israel and the demise of Egypt's European communities, the family's experiences with racism in class conscious London as newly arrived refugees with five Egyptian pounds to their name, the ship voyage to Australia and my Dad's contribution to multiculturalism and community development in Melbourne. Almost a year to the day that I launched "Five Egyptian Pounds" my publishers have closed down. I still have plenty of books available for sale, with the option of producing a second edition. The books can be purchased through the Immigration Museum bookshop, the New International Bookshop or by contacting me or George Said through facebook or through emailing [email protected] . Dad and I are available for presentations and I continue doing writing workshops where my book will also be on sale. I am not considering writing another book at this stage. Instead I am writing blogs on topics that I feel are not being sufficiently covered elsewhere. I may consider writing in different genres later on in life. I am currently very busy with family, tutoring special needs students and campaigning. I would like to thank everyone who has encouraged my writing efforts through facebook. I have really enjoyed the encouragement and feedback. To celebrate the anniversary of the book launch I will post a few highlights from Five Egyptian Pounds.
12.01.2022 Our family's migration story will be featured on SBS TV news on Monday night between 6.30 and 7.30pm. We were interviewed and filmed at my parents' house last n...ight. I was interviewed about the book I wrote "Five Egyptian Pounds: the story of George Said" which is my father's biography. The segment will also contain parts of my father's historic silent home movie footage, which he filmed while we were on board the migrant passenger Ship SS Orion in 1962, which shows Station Pier lined with Australians waiting to be re-united with relatives from abroad.
