23.01.2022 August 7 is celebrated as National Handloom Day. Handloom sector is a symbol of the Indias glorious cultural heritage and an important source of livelihood for most engaged in this art form. The Handloom sector is key to women empowerment as over 70% of handloom weavers and allied workers are women. The COVID pandemic has hit this sector very hard with a sluggish market and poor transpiration of raw materials. Five Pleats by Poornima Menon is behind the weavers and has sup...ported a few needy ones with loans and advance payments. When you purchase one of our curated saree you are making a difference in the lives of the weavers and artisans. #NationalHandloomDay #supporttheweavers #supportlocalbusiness

22.01.2022 #A #Amazing #Ajarakh Things around me amaze me !! There are the expected and the unexpected, there are the predictables and the paradoxes !! The trees that flower and the buds that bloom, the incessant rain and the rainbow at the end of it all - there is a wonder in them all. But what amazes me the most is the relentless and indomitable spirit of nature. A fortnight ago I took a trip the the Blue Mountains (New South Wales) and travelled through the bush fire ravaged landsc...ape. The fresh sprouts of leaves and fresh branches sticking out magnificently from the charred trunks of trees was an amazing sight to behold! It seemed the embodiment of hope and resilience. The saree of the day is an Ajarakh on Mashroo. This amazing fabric is a hand woven mix of cotton and silk. As you can see the saree has the appearance of glistening silk on the outside, but what cannot be seen is that it conceals the soothing feel of cotton on the inside. #AtoZofsarees #AtoZofemotions #AtoZChallenge PS: We have a beautiful collection of Ajarakh on Gajji silk and raw silk. Inbox for details. Start your own collection of A to Z in handmade weaves and embroideries.

21.01.2022 #sambalpurisaree #SambalpuriHandloom August 1 is celebrated as Sambalpuri Day. The main idea of this day is to celebrate the art, language, tradition and culture so the current generation get to know more about the Sambalpuri culture. The Sambalpuri sarees are known for incorporating traditional images like shells, wheels, wildlife and flowers and have deep symbolism with the culture of native Odisha. Red, black and white colours represent the true Odia culture. The highpoin...t of these sarees is the traditional craftsmanship of the Bandhakala or the tie-dye art, also known as Sambalpuri Ikat. These hand woven sarees are very popular and the various varieties include Sonepuri, Pasapali, Bomkai, Barpali, and Bapta saris. Most of these sarees have been named after their places of origin and are popularly known as Pata. Five Pleats by Poornima Menon have curated Sambalpuri sarees directly from the weavers and artisans from Sambalpur. These are just some of the sarees. Do visit the studio to view these sarees and add one of these exclusive sarees to your collection. See more

15.01.2022 #B #Brave #Baluchari A popular saying goes thus, When the going gets tough, the tough gets going. Acts of bravery are attributed to those in war zones and battle fronts, but the truth is that we all meet with adverse situations at different junctures in our lives and we often surprise ourselves with our own tenacity and will power. Overcoming our own fears is one of the greatest acts of bravery. When life pushes us into a corner our fight/flight mode triggers and our decis...ion at that moment shapes the end result. I recall my initial months in this new country. The social aspect of the lifestyle was no big deal as change had been the only constant in our nomadic lifestyle. The trying part was the professional side. I have been a teacher all my life and hence could think of nothing outside the education sector. While waiting for the completion of some formalities with the DEC, I got my very first job with the Smith Family as the coordinator of their Learning for Life scholarships. But the job came with a prerequisite - able to drive as the role involved house visits. Getting a licence wasnt the difficult part, driving to completely alien places was ! With no GPS and relying heavily on the hard copy of the road maps, the idea of driving alone to strange locations in the new city petrified me. But I was not one to back off ! I had to conquer my fears. My will power and my tenacity got me through those hurdles. Now as look back, I feel mighty proud of what I had achieved !! Those were my absolute brave moments. The saree of the day is a Baluchari silk. Baluchari sarees feature beautifully hand-woven mythological figures and stories on Silk, which make them unique and distinctive. Since the weaving community mainly resides in Bishnupur area of West Bengal, they are also known as Bishnupuri sarees. Baluchari sarees are famous for the heavy, intrinsic brocade work on the pallu. The saree is a piece of history reflecting the social practices from a particular era. It is a craft that also documents history. Five Pleats by Poornima Menon has an enviable collection of Baluchari silks. Inbox for details. Start your own collection of A to Z in handmade weaves and embroideries. #AtoZofsarees #AtoZofemotions #AtoZChallenge See more

14.01.2022 #khadi #handloom #handmade Informative piece of information about khadi, cotton, handmade and mill produced sarees and other garments. There are a number of people selling cheap imitations of the original. Dont make your decision to purchase based on the price but the quality and the authenticity. When the produce is labour intensive and individualistic, the prices will be higher than the mass produced machine made ones. All sarees painstakingly curated by me for my brand ...is handloom and handmade. Each and every piece comes from the weavers looms and the artisans table. Absolutely nothing comes from the mills or the machines. Poornima Menon See more

04.01.2022 A Tribute to the Bangladeshi Jamdani Weaver Busting Myths !! Changing the Myth of Woven Air into Reality ... Refrain from and avoid buying the so called "Silk Dhakais" or FAKE Jamdanis ... Please remember that REAL and Authentic Jamdanis, are woven only in Bangladesh, come only in Cotton Warp by Cotton Weft. You will party to destroying this ago old art if you purchase CHEAP imitations for the only reason - that they are CHEAP. "No one is willing to pay what is required by an artisan to devote his or her life to such a difficult and time consuming endeavour You can only use a single strand of yarn, therefore a 6 yard sari takes so much time to produce. As a result, more and more of the specialised Jamdani weavers are leaving this tradition altogether and opting for more modern forms of occupation. Machine made Jamdani is threatening the real Jamdani. They are copying Jamdani design on machine made fabric and instead of 10000/- they are selling it for 1000/- So when people buy pseudo - Jamdanis or not Jamdanis, I say that they should first try to understand what Jamdani is". When you purchase a handwoven saree, always tell yourself that you are supporting and investing in our cultural heritage. Own few sarees, but own authentic ones. Choose QUALITY over QUANTITY !!

04.01.2022 We wish all our friends and well wishers a very happy and prosperous Diwali. May this Festival of Lights dispel the darkness of ignorance, hatred and malice. Let us all coexist in harmony and loads of joyous moments.

04.01.2022 Some videos that were recorded by the Five Pleats by Poornima Menon team during the visit to the remote villages in India to source the sarees. #NationalHandloomDay #KasavuSaree Video 1 - binding the fine threads of the cotton yard by hand before the weaving process begins.

03.01.2022 The Patola entourage !! Choose yours and enrich your collection.

02.01.2022 Another option with a beautiful pink border. This one is a show stopper !

02.01.2022 #C #Curiosity #Chanderi Curiosity is the engine of achievement Ken Robinson... Life would be pretty boring in the absence of curiosity. I am not talking about the intrusive curiosity, not the kind that makes you nosey, not the kind where you want to know the business of every man and his dog. The curiosity I am talking about stems from creativity and an innate desire to know about the ways of life, this universe and the enviable precision with which everything happens when it is meant to happen. Curiosity and the desire to know more led to various inventions and discoveries. What if the Newton never thought much of the apple that fell on him or if Archimedes never had his Eurekha moment !! The intrinsic need to know more and not settle for what is in front of you, makes you push your boundaries and explore areas that seemed unfathomable. Studies show that Curiosity rewires your neurons, keeping you sharp, energetic and interesting. So keep the child in you alive; unleash the curiosity in you, and you will be surprised to see the horizons expanding and widening right before your eyes. The saree of the day is a Chanderi silk. PS: We have an exclusive collection of Chanderi pure silk and silk cotton blend sarees. Inbox for more details. Start your own collection of A to Z in handmade weaves and embroideries. #AtoZofsarees #AtoZofemotions #AtoZChallenge
