09.01.2022 Longpi pottery is nothing short of magic. this absolutely stunning earthen-ware is made specifically in the Indian region of Manipur. Longpi ham is made from a mixed paste of ground black serpentinite lava stone and a weathered rock clay. the clay is native to only Longpi village, and is the village's primary cottage industry. none of the utensils are made on a wheel, everything is hand formed. After the pots are shaped, polished and sun dried they are heated in a bonfire and... thereafter polished with a special tree leaf locally called Chiron ni. The distinctive black color of Longpi ham is a result of polishing the heated earthen pots with the tree leaf; you will notice all shades of black, silver and copper naturally gleaming through the the stoneware. Not only is this type of pottery completely hand made and chemical free from start to finish- it can be washed in the dishwasher you can use it to bake in the oven or cook on an open flame, it is microwave friendly and is used to eat from and to serve or store food in. interestingly, food stays warm or cold in this fabulous insulated stoneware. as i said, absolute magic. feel free to contact me for available pieces. Made from reclaimed boat wood / local furniture or timber shop waste product, these bull heads are representations of Nandi; Nandi is the lord Shiva's mount and is also the guardian at the gates of Shiva's heavenly abode (Kailalasa). If you know anything about india, the first thing you probably know is that cows and bulls are revered and respected, therefore these cow masks have absolutely no similarity with game trophy heads (yuk), and e...verything to do with celebrating a demigod animal. The heads are made by villagers, men work the wood, and the women of the village hand paint each piece. so you will find no two are alike. Aside from being fair trade, each mask provides work, confidence and enjoyment for village ladies that are at home all day. each mask is 24 inches tall.
