20.01.2022 Do others finish off your paintings? (A Blog by Mike Barr) I’ve seen it happen a few times in recent days and it is prevalent in amateur art circles. It can st...art in painting workshops and classes where tutors will tell you what your painting needs, and in some cases put their own brush strokes on the canvas to show you. This is all fair enough when we are learning, but the time comes when we must stand up and own what we paint. Our signature tells the world that it is our painting and we are happy with the finished product. The practice of asking other artists if our work needs something else, can last a lifetime if we let it. It’s a sign that we are still not confident in what we have done, and we cannot settle on it unless it gets some seal of approval from our peers. Asking if it is finished, or if it needs something else on public places like Facebook, will produce a flush of advice conflicting advice. Often, opinions are posted by artists of lesser quality and experience and this does not help in any way. The worst of it is that Artists lose control of the work. They are asking other people to finish the painting, and at that point it ceases to be the artist’s creation it has become a collaboration. The signature at the bottom claiming it is your work is no longer true. Amazingly, this way of thinking is wide-spread and even encouraged, but it stifles originality and confidence. Paint without asking others to finish it for you - you will never gain confidence in your work if you rely on this. Learn to be your own best critic and be a silent critic of other artist’s work. Be confident and proud of your signature, knowing that it is your own work from concept to the finish. There is no way forward as an artist until we can happily do this. Mike Barr Some were critical of me painting sail boats on Goolwa Beach, because they just don’t exist. The painting sold in a flash!

19.01.2022 Mike Barr's Blog Showing The Unseen "Many artists have a way of presenting more in a scene than what is apparent at first glance. It’s not that certain things a...ren’t there to see, but an artist can make them visible and they do so by focus and exaggeration. Some things are so subtle in real life that we don’t see them until things are made plain in art. Shadows and reflected colour can easily be glossed over by everyone, including painters. A shadow is just a shadow until we look at its colour. Mostly, we regard a shadow as a darker version of the colour in which it is cast and even when we study it we may not see any apparent ‘other’ colour. The impressionists were good at coloured shadows particularly the blues. These blue shadows are prevalent on sunny days with a blue sky and are more likely to be seen on light surfaces. It’s hard to pick most of the time, but they can be seen clearly in photographs taken in such conditions. On those blue-sky days, the bluish shadows on white shirts is very apparent. With the white-yellow of the sun blotted out by shadow, the pre-eminent colour of the blue sky, colours the shadow. It is also seen on the beach, especially later in the afternoon when the sun is not as strong and the shadows on the sand are clearly blue-purple. As the saying goes, that’s not all. Other things can effect the colour in shadows too such as reflected light off other things. A white flower may have a blue shadow on a sunny day, but may also have some green from the reflected light off nearby leaves. The shadows on sand-hills can also be coloured by the bright reflective sand. This reflective sand light can also be seen on peoples legs that are in shadow. It is like a golden glaze. If we can capture this in paint and exaggerate it slightly, it will become very believable. Heavily enhanced colours in shadows mostly seems to work. This is because although these effects are subtle and hardly perceived in real life, our brain knows that these subtleties are there and agree with them once they are painted more colourfully on the canvas. There are so many ‘hidden’ things that can be enhanced on the canvas and so many ways to do it. It really is one of the wonders of being an artist." Happy Painting Caption Some long end-of-day blue shadows on sails and sand.
