21.01.2022 CHILDREN Shipwrecked 15th January 1838 182 Years Ago Today The Children was a 255 ton wooden barque built in Liverpool in 1824. She was brought by the Henty family of Portland in 1837 to start a re3gular trading run between Tasmania and South Australia, carrying livestock and other farming goods. Under the command of Captain Browne, the Children left Launceston on 11th January 1839 on her fist voyage to Adelaide. The cargo consisted of 1500 sheep, horses, bullocks, ...farming implements, building materials and provisions. Twenty-four passengers, including two families, four shepherds and a crew of fifteen, were also on board. The Children was caught in hurricane force north westerly winds. When the winds subsided, the captain, who had not slept for four days, went below to sleep and left the second mate in charge as the first mate had become sick. Unfortunately, Browne had misjudged the distance from the mainland. During the night, the children struck high cliffs at what is now Childers Cove. Those on board were washed away one by one as the Children fell apart and disappeared in two hours. Those who drowned were the captain, the second mate and fifteen others, including four children. By daylight the survivors were huddled together on the beach, amid the bodies of their companions and animal carcasses. One man, whose foot had been smashed by an anchor when the deck gave way, had a toe amputated with a knife as he lay on the beach. The survivors were finally taken by horse and cart to Campbell’s farm, near the whaling station at Port Fairy. Much of the ruins of the Children has been destroyed by the constant movement of the sea beneath the cliffs. The exact date of the wreck’s discovery Is not known, but skeletons were found exposed in the shifting sands at Childers Cove in 1951. PHOTO 1 - An anchor of the Children. 21.01.2022 ARTEFACT OF THE WEEK Just imagine the children of the Loch Ard playing around on the slippery decks with their new toys, parents fondly watching, all blissfully oblivious of the tragedy awaiting them around the corner. This wooden, unpainted toy soldier was recovered from the wreck of the Loch Ard and just look how amazing it is! The blank canvas of the toy allowed whoever bought it to use their own creativity with colouring it in.

20.01.2022 Did you know? The large brick chimney you can see from the Green at Flagstaff Hill is originally from the Grassmere Butter Factory!

18.01.2022 ANTARES Found 14th December 1914 This portion of porthole was part of the fittings of the Antares. In mid-November 1914, after the beginning of the First World War, a young local man went one evening to fish near the Bay of Islands, west of Peterborough. ... He later arrived home hurriedly and in an agitated state declaring: "The Germans are coming!" His family laughed and disbelieved him, as this young fellow was prone to telling fictional tales. About a month later, on December 13th 1914, local farmers Phillip Le Couteur and Peter Mathieson were riding in the vicinity, checking on cattle. Phillip Le Couteur saw what he thought was the hull of a ship below the cliffs. He rode to Allansford and contacted police. The next day, two Constables and Phillip Le Couteur returned to the site, where they dug a trench near the top of the cliff and sank a log in it. To this they attached a rope, which they threw down the cliff face. Constable Stainsbury and Phillip Le Couteur then made the dangerous descent down the rope on the sheer cliff face. They found wreckage strewn around a small cove and a portion of a man's body under the cliffs. The hull of the ship could be seen about 300 metres out to sea. He was responsible for the health and welfare of all passengers and crew on every ship entering or leaving the port. His diligence was paramount to ensure no new illnesses entered Warrnambool. ... Next time you're able to join us at Flagstaff Hill, have a look at our very own Port Medical Office, complete with traditional medical instruments.

03.01.2022 ARTEFACT OF THE WEEK How terrifying does this surgical lithotrite from the 19th century look? Just imagine if a doctor came at you with one of those these days! It belonged to the Warrnambool's last serving Port Medical Officer, Doctor William Roy Angus, Surgeon and Oculist.... The lithotrite would have been used to crush and remove bladder stones in the early days, with the knobs at the top end being manipulated to open and close jaws on the other end of it, removing the need for surgical incisions. You can read lots more about Doctor Angus' equipment, as well as other artefacts in the Flagstaff Hill collection here : https://victoriancollections.net.au//57983abad0cdd1098c0b9
