24.01.2022 Introducing our new Casual Retail Assistant - ALYCE! Alyce has completed her Induction Training and we asked her to do a little introduction to you all. "I’ve recently moved to the area and have fallen in love with the community here. I love getting out and exploring the area. This is my dog Indy. She loves morning walks on the beach and sleeping. I’m currently studying sustainable agriculture and food security at uni. In my spare time (when I can find some) I also love cre...ating and making things. I’m excited to get started at the Flame Tree Co-op!" Welcome to our Co-op community Alyce!

22.01.2022 As Covid-19 pandemic continues, and in line with NSW government advice, we are asked to advise customers to wear a face mask when in the shop. Flame Tree is managing Covid-19 safety concerns in the following way: A maximum of four shoppers in the store, one person per household. All shoppers (including children) are asked to hand sanitise, or wash hands, on entry and regularly throughout their shop.... If you are feeling unwell, we ask that you shop online. Children are to be supervised at all times. Only touch what you intend to purchase, particularly fresh produce. Cough and sneeze into your elbow and hand sanitise, or wash hands immediately. Maintain a distance of 1.5 metres with other shoppers and our staff and volunteers. Shop as quickly as possible. We regret that during Covid-19 the co-op cannot be a place for catch ups with friends and acquaintances. If you meet friends at the co-op, we would appreciate it if you could please take your conversation outside, so that we can maximise the number of shoppers. Thank you all for your understanding and continued support of Flame Tree. Remember, placing online orders is also available along with shopping in the store. Here is the link to our online store. http://flametree.coop

21.01.2022 ** MANAGERS SPECIAL ** FLAKED ALMONDS Until 27/9/2020, sold in bulk, $15.28/kg (usually $26.74/kg). *No further discounts*... Flaked almonds have been blanched and then thinly sliced. They have a light delicate nutty flavour, subtle and perfectly textured to top many dishes including pilafs, salads, muesli or yoghurt. Editor's Suggestion: Keep a jar of mixed toasted seeds and nuts in the fridge to add a boost of nutrition and flavour to every meal from scrambled eggs, salads to roasted veg. Heat a frypan on medium heat and slowly toast a mix of nuts and seeds until the seeds start to 'pop' or turn golden brown and fragrant. Gently shake the pan as they toast to avoid burning. I like to add: sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, pine nuts, flaked almonds and black cumin (nigella seeds). All available from the Co-op!

20.01.2022 One way to eat an earth friendly diet is to eat from nose-to-tail, that is, eat the whole plant or animal. This reduces food waste and in turn greatly reduces your carbon footprint. Eat your delicious Glenbernie Orchard apple cores or make apple scrap vinegar (pictured), you’ll find a recipe in the latest edition of Pip Magazine. Another recipe idea from our local food waste warriors Hidden Harvest is carrot top dip or pesto - you might find it in their new recipe e-book. ... Try some secondary cuts of meat like oxtail, tongue, liver, fat & bones for stock rather than opting for prime cuts. Or even better try some wild game like kangaroo that lives a naturally and produces little methane. I challenge you, good luck! #thirroul #foodwaste #foodwastewarriors #sustainableliving

19.01.2022 COMMUNITY GIVING! Did you know that Cooperatives around the world operate according to the same set of core principles and values, adopted by the International Co-operative Alliance? We continually strive to uphold these seven principles and demonstrate the value of community. When it comes to giving back, principles 6 and 7 - Cooperation Among Cooperatives and Concern for Community - are values that our membership strongly support. Here are some examples of recent contr...ibutions our Co-op has made back to our local community. * Donation to the Wollongong Homeless Hub (see photo). At the beginning of COVID, we donated toilet paper, eggs and potatoes. ** $500 donation to Wildlife Rescue South Coast. You may remember our in-store bushfire-relief campaign with Boomerang Bags. We sold bags for $5 each and Flame Tree matched the $5 sales dollar for dollar. We were able to donate this amount with a little extra top-op from the Co-op. *** Pay it Forward meals from Eve&Co. We are a collection point for these delicious pre-ordered meals, and we receive a percentage of sales for doing this. The Co-op is donating this amount to be used for meals to vulnerable women in need. The meals are available for collection from the Co-op on Thursdays. For more info about Eve&Co, visit their website https://www.theeveproject.org.au **** Donation of three large fruit and veg display stands to the new waste-free supermarket in Port Kembla - Port Grocer.

17.01.2022 ** MANAGERS SPECIAL** Until 22/11/2020 Spence Cocoa Dark Chocolate Buttons Sold in bulk, $40/kg / $4/100g (usually $51.20/kg)... What's not to love about Spencer Cocoa chocolate?! Spencer Cocoa is an Australian-made bean-to-bar chocolate, produced not too far away from us, in Mudgee. Chocolate maker Luke Spencer explains that they buy cocoa beans directly from a small group of families on the island of Malekula, Vanuatu who grow, harvest, ferment and dry the cocoa. Back in Mudgee, they roast, grind, conch and temper the cocoa into beautiful chocolate. These chocolate buttons are delicious enjoyed as they are, or melted into hot milk, desserts or chopped up into cookies!

11.01.2022 We love our Popes Produce greens at the Co-op! Popes Produce is a family run permaculture farm based in Woonona. They grow chemical free produce based on permaculture principles to nourish the soil, enhance biodiversity, and provide healthy food for their customers. A message from Popes Produce: ... "Patience is a Virtue" "Garden offerings from early Spring include the last of the Winter crops (warm days caused a few to bolt, setting seed for the next generation) and leafy greens. Leafys are the staple in the garden. Shallots, kale, rainbow chard, parsley, Italian spinach and maybe surprisingly to many lettuce. The other great early spring offering is blossoms a sign of potential as to what to anticipate in the warmer days. Slowly, slowly I’ve been learning to move with the seasons." 08.01.2022 HUGE CONGRATS to our very own Cath for her hard work to get the FOGO program happening here in Wollongong!! Cath said... "We are super excited that food and organics (FOGO) waste collection is being rolled out to Wollongong right now through to December. This will lower the amount of waste going to landfill and reduce Wollongong Council's major source of Greenhouse emissions". Well Done Cath...your Co-op family are super proud of you for getting this happening.

08.01.2022 Food waste competition on for primary school aged kids in Wollongong area - help fight the war on food waste and raise awareness about perfectly imperfect produce by entering with the chance to win some awesome prizes. Kids are asked to write a short fictional narrative about ‘ugly’ fruit and vegetables and how they can be saved from becoming food waste. Plus develop a recipe which uses one of their characters. https://wollongong.nsw.gov.au//love-foo/school-competition

08.01.2022 Purple Foods! Spring has sprung and we are seeing lots more colour in the fresh fruit and veggies we are able to source. All brightly coloured fruit and vegetables contain antioxidants compounds which play a key role in protecting our bodies but many naturally purple-coloured foods contain a certain antioxidant called anthocyanin. These are beneficial plant pigments which give fruit and veg their deep red, purple or blue hues. It's recommended we eat a rainbow of c...oloured fruit and veg every day! At the moment we have purple carrots, purple potatoes, beetroot - loose and bunches, eggplant and red cabbage in our Co-op!

06.01.2022 NEW SUPPLIER PROFILE **BRUSH IT ON** The Brush It On idea came from a desire to protect this planet for future generations. When founders Viviana and Alice learned there is meant to be more plastic than fish in our oceans by 2050, they got quite upset and decided to take an active part in saving our planet. Viv & Alice created Brush It On to fight plastic pollution by helping people make conscious choices without sacrificing their lifestyle.... The co-op is stocking a range of products from Brush It On including not only compostable tooth brushes and floss, but also silicone baking mats. 100% of profits are donated to conservation organisations that protect the world’s oceans, forests, and wildlife.
