19.01.2022 Bashing the local council seems to be a national sport. But, to their credit, local governments are now far better at community engagement than even a couple of years ago. Some are even running their own newsrooms, filling the void left by resource-ravaged local media. How does your council go with its communications? *** Any organisation can step-up engagement and better control their message with a DIY Newsroom. Here's how ... #diynewsroom #strategiccommunications #communications

18.01.2022 Those companies that have jumped head-on into digital news distribution, and left print to languish, might want to take stock of the recent sale of one of Australia's largest newspaper publishing companies. The transaction signals that even the most entrepreneurial digital natives see value in newspaper assets. Yes, those media properties are priced to sell, but print is still profitable. And our advice to the new owners? To best serve those audiences into the future, you're going to have to crank-up your subscription strategy and consider what communities really want ... and, of course, reclaim the property sector. >> BLOG

10.01.2022 How do you think our leaders fared communicating during the bushfires in Australia? There seemed a great divide between those leaders who communicated simply and effectively and those who fell over the basic principles of #crisiscommunications It's incredible really. There's never been so many comms professionals around leadership teams. So no shortage of sound, timely advice and mechanisms to deliver messaging. But we continue to see leaders who go MIA or rogue. And what are... those basics of crisis comms? >> READ BLOG https://buff.ly/2RPQgdK See more

10.01.2022 Are you making significant change in your organisation? I'd be surprised if you were not. When I ask business leaders whether they are prepared for change - are they really "up for it" - they typically respond that they are. Emphatically. But when the rubber hits the road it is amazing how change resistant that individuals can be, even sub-consciously. This goes for the company culture too. Many organisations are just not wired for doing things differently. *** Strong and cle...ar communication from the outset is the lubricant that unblocks the corporate cogs. My experience is that as soon as you are thinking of making change you need to get people on-board. Every day you delay that, you chip away at the chance for success. McKinsey & Co found that when managers and frontline employees were unengaged, the success rate of projects was just 3 per cent. But this rose to 25 per cent when they were involved. And the CEO's role was critical. The message: form your strategy, communicate it expertly and work actively on engagement. - STUART HOWIE #strategy #strategiccommunications #changemanagement #corporatecommunications #diynewsroom #content

06.01.2022 Social media and mobile phone use is rewiring our brains. True dinks. Researchers have found that the constant interaction with social media is changing the plasticity of our grey matter - specifically, the nucleus accumbens. As well, research shows the rise in technology use is decreasing students' ability to communicate. Eighteen-year-olds now have the social maturity of much younger teens because they have been so locked onto their mobile phones and not engaged in human in...teraction One of the worst aspects of social media, though, is that even the highest consumers of social media do not trust it. Of course, social media has lots of benefits - and you are reading this on it. But I reckon we will start to see a counter-culture develop as people return to the basic beauty of the unique human experience. 01.01.2022 I've just read (again) one of my all-time favourites, #TheOdyssey. Marvellous storytelling from an ancient time. I can't help but equate the allure of the Sirens to that of what we face today with social media. She is one sexy beast - but she will run you onto the rocks given half the chance. Strapping yourself to a nearby mast to avoid her wicked ways is probably not practical. But having a great #contentstrategy as part of a wider #communicationsstrategy will keep you focu...sed and is the ultimate ballast. The net result will be you get to enjoy the fruits of a healthy partnership with social media, not get left high and dry. Don't fall for the time wasting vanity project of chasing "likes" and "shares". - Stuart Howie <> #strategiccommunications #diynewsroom #diymedia #media #socialmediamarketing #content #contentmarketing #homer #ancientgreece
