22.01.2022 Jireh's been missing during these fires. He came in today injured. The yellow part you can see is actually bone. I figure somehow he has staked himself. He allowed me without any fuss or protest to wash this wound right out and apply some antiseptic.
22.01.2022 Here is Enosh again on Day 11. This is his second ride for Day 11 with his new owner this time. We ran into two issues here. On mounting, we hold a loose rei...n. The horse is generally trusted to keep his head in the same position, not to back up or move sideways, just simply to stand. Enosh decided that he would put his head round toward the rider and give a little nip...issue No 1. Then when he was being ridden, on being nudged firmly with the heels, he refused to move and flattened his ears...issue No 2. Pretty common for a young horse. We dealt with these issues firmly but NOT harshly. When I have issues like this with a young horse, I put myself 'in the horses head' and think it through from his point of view. See more
22.01.2022 Day 9...Enosh decided that he didn't like the saddle. However he wasn't able to unload it. Hubby got on him ready for a bucking session but Enosh behaved really well. It was just that saddle he didn't like.
20.01.2022 I worked with Benny today. He is a quiet, gentle little gelding who hasn't been handled much. I mainly just wanted to see where he was at. He is a little bit head shy but this will be easily overcome with him.
19.01.2022 Today is Day 10 for Enosh. Here he is with his new owner. I also rode him and he went very well just a bit unsure of what is required of him and that is perfectly natural.
19.01.2022 Jireh coming up from the dam.
18.01.2022 Josiah was ridden for the first time today. Hubby led him off Jonah for about an hour before he mounted. We don't usually do this but the reasoning is that it... gets the horse use to someone being above him and just generally quietens them. Knowing this horse, I sensed that Hubby had just the one chance to get in that saddle...very different to all our other horses. Hubby hit the saddle and Josiah just flew like lightning around the yard...time for me to get out. He rode brilliantly and after ten minutes, Josiah started to listen and he had his head. He quietened down and began to stop on command. I don't think I'll ever ride him but Hubby says, "I like him. He's my kind of horse". I can do anything with him on the ground but I honestly think he's just too good for me. He will be absolutely amazing when he begins to listen and learn. See more
18.01.2022 Day 1 This is Hanna, the foal on the left and then the beautiful mare on the right, now all grown up. Hanna has been sold but was sent back to us for breaking. This is her very first day with the bridle on. As you can see in the photo, she is chewing on the bit. They always do this in the initial stages. Often they also get their tongue over the bit. I had already taught Hanna to yield in many ways including the side pass. She had not forgotten anything. I am so proud of her. Her coat and condition are beautiful thanks to the good care of her new owners.
15.01.2022 Day 11 with Enosh. Here I am dismounting. He behaved really well, a couple of times just moving freely off the leg. Enosh has quietened down incredibly. We now have a trust together.
14.01.2022 I am just working with Joey to create a gentle little horse. He is now quite happy to lower his head. He was first in for his feed and quite close behind me.
14.01.2022 Joey is looking for his feed. Today I taught him to lower his head. I do this for various reasons. Personally, I don't like a high headed horse. This is an indication that the horse is trying to be in control. It is easy to halter, unhalter and bridle, unbridle a horse who has his head down. Children can also pat a horse when its head is lowered to their level (always under adult supervision of course). Joey caught on very quickly.
13.01.2022 I only had time to work with Benny today as I had a bit of trouble with mares getting out and stallions on the fenceline. I noticed when I lunged Benny at a trot that he had a slight lameness. On examination, I discovered that he might have an abscess or possibly seedy toe. I treated this. I also wormed him as his coat is not glossy and he is under condition weightwise.
11.01.2022 Josiah on the float for the first time. He followed me up like a gentleman. Of course, there was a reward. When I first started working with Josiah, he was t...he hottest horse I had ever handled. I thought, "I am never going to get this horse to where I want him." He was brilliant but we didn't trust each other. Hubby couldn't mount him so I bushed him. Amazingly, this time I have noticed a change. He is still very wary with new people but when he thinks I'm not looking, he comes up behind me and touches me with his muzzle. (I'm always watching him even when I turn my back). He hasn't forgotten anything I've taught him and he moves like a pro when lunging him. See more
11.01.2022 Josiah...this beautiful boy is ever the challenge. We have come a long way but I have decided to backtrack a little and work on his hind end. That is, I need to be comfortable walking around behind him, handling his tail, knowing that he won't launch out with his back hooves. He has never kicked but I still sense that at times, we have a trust issue.
10.01.2022 Enosh has left for his new home. What a beautiful gelding he is, always trying to please. Goodbye beautiful boy. I shall miss you.
08.01.2022 Josiah...this morning I put him on and off the horse float three times. He behaved really well. I created a bit of noise while I was in there with him and thi...s didn't seem to phase him. If you have ever ridden in a horse float, you will know that it is very noisy and the suspension is next to nothing rolling over the gravel. See more
08.01.2022 Day 10...Enosh, a lot quieter. He is standing to mount.
07.01.2022 Day 4 for Hanna. This horse has to be nearly the easiest I have broken. Today was her first day driving in the long reins. She is not doing anything wrong. She only has one bad habit that we are working on. When I do the girth up, she turns her head to nip. Hanna and I are working on this. I believe in 'nipping it in the bud' early.
07.01.2022 I brought Abe in today to handle. He is probably the biggest horse I have. Abe has a lot of spirit and will be a goer. We are in the early stages creating a gentleness in all areas.
06.01.2022 Josiah is back in...Abe and Joey out in the big paddock.
06.01.2022 Joey has the bridle on for the first time today. We have to work together on the head area, Joey is not at all friendly when handling his head side on.
02.01.2022 This is Josiah. He has had three rides under saddle and then we bushed him. I just got him in on the spur of the moment today and put him in the long reins. Generally, I walk behind him but today I sent him around on the lunge. I had forgotten how totally brilliant he is on his feet. He is undoubtedly the best horse I have ever worked with on the ground.
