25.01.2022 Getting to the root of the matter. I am the sort of bloke who puts heaps of thought into my growing. I do a lot of research & consider other growers comments & ideas.... Premium potting mix, with a bit of Perlite thrown in has always been my choice for growing chillies. Last season, I read good things about coir & a number of growers spoke of great results from incorporating it into their potting mix. I gave it a crack last season, by mixing fine coir with potting mix & perlite in some pots & coarse chunky coir, mixed with potting mix & perlite in other pots. This caused a few issues, as I now had 3 different mixes that behaved differently! It made watering harder, as I had to apply different amounts of water, depending on the extra water holding capcity of the coir in the different mixes! As far as growth went, I did not observe much difference. I should have made notes on yield though, as I am unsure if any plants had yield reduction, due to waterholding capacity of the mix! When last seasons plants died in the frosts of late Autumn, I cut them off at the base. All the pots with mix, stump & roots inside, were stacked on pallets, as I wanted to use the potting mix again this season. I have been tipping the old mix out & belting/shaking the potting mix from the old roots. Then mixing this 50/50 with new premium potting mix & a bit more perlite. Doing around 250 old pots this way, gave great observation, as to how roots developed last season. After I had done a few, I noticed a pattern start to emerge. Root development & spread, was most prolific in potting mix & perlite. Poorest root development & spread was evident in the coarse coir/potting mix/perlite blend. Fine coir/potting mix/perlite pots roots were only marginally better than the coarse coir blend! So, I suspect plant growth, development & productivity may have been reduced in the coir blends, due to poor root development. OR it may be the case, that the plants did not need to punch out so many roots in the coir mixes. Either way the attached photo clearly shows what I am crapping on about! NO WAY the root balls on the left could have accessed all of the nutrients in the pot, compared to those on the right. It should be noted that I grow chillies in polytunnels, in Tasmania. Other growers in other areas/climates, could observe & report something entirely different!
23.01.2022 Plant growth is accelerating rapidly, in response to tender loving care & consitent warm weather!
21.01.2022 Hope everyone had a great weekend. Mine was chillies, chillies & nothing but chillies! Harvesting prime, ripe pods from best plants & operating on them with a s...urgical scalpel to collect the very best seed I can find. Have not cut myself yet, but I absolutely dread the day when I do! I am sure even a shallow cut with a scalpel blade coated in capsaicin oil will be an agonizing & unforgettable experience! So here's a few photos from today. PHOTO DETAILS. Finally got a ridiculously productive large podded Bhut Jolokia Yellow after 6 years of trialling different phenos! PICS 2, 3 & 4, riot of color in the polytunnel. Pic 5 Choc Bhut x 7 Pot Yellow, originates from a selection I made 5 seasons ago. Always productive, stunning to look at with a variety of colors & pods are bloody hot & thick walled! PICS 6 & 7, Pink Tiger x Peach Bhut, very interesting to grow for the first time this season. Plants go through bizarre color changes. Dark Purple, greenish purple then pale orange and then some pods get purple blotches. Seems fairly productive too! Have a great week! Cheers from Regan at Flamin Devil Chillies in Tassie! See more
20.01.2022 Door is always open, coffee on, and beersin the fridge. I’m doing a BROTHER check-in. Showing support for one another. I need EIGHT men to post, not share, this message to show you are always there if someone needs to talk. Got a rough idea of those who will say done on my post.
20.01.2022 I would like to start this post with a HUGE thank you, to all the people who have purchased seeds from Flamin Devil! I have received some really positive feedback, regarding germination rates for seed I have sold! So far, my customers are getting 90 to 100% germination with my seeds! WOW, I am really pleased to hear this, as I put huge time & effort into selecting ONLY the best seeds from the best pods on my best plant in each variety!... The seeds that I sell are from my own "personal stash" & I am just starting to "hook into" them to propagate this seasons plants. There are still a few left to sell though! Yeah, now it is my turn to have finally have a crack, after a long cold winter! (I Haven't been slack though, as I have been using my heat bed to propagate native plants from cuttings & seeds). I started with 5 varieties of Rocoto's last week, sown onto moistened paper towels. I placed these in ziplok bags, put them in a nursery tray & "parked" them on my heated sand bed in my poly tunnel. Four days later, Rocoto Orange had already started to spout! Six days later & I have transferred 52 sprouted seeds into pots. This included Rocoto orange, 2 varieties of Rocoto red, 2 varieties of Rocoto yellow & a nice Rocoto brown. Can't growl at that, hey! I am doing a bit of a trial with germination this time around. 1) Paper towel & ziplok method 2) Sown direct into small pots 3) Sown into Preforma 20mm peat plug trays I am impressed with the Preforma plug trays, so far. There are 240 20mm plugs in each tray, with pre-made holes to place the seed in. I put seeds in a small sterilized dish & used sterilized tweezers to transfer seeds onto top of plugs. Then used tweezers to place seeds into plug holes. Remains to be seen how they germinate, but the peat plugs look really good & fibrous! Today, I started on sowing the ornamentals, milds & superhots. Photos are tagged with info Cheers from an excited Flamin Devil in Tassie Have a cracker of a season!
19.01.2022 Hey folks, just thought I would share an amazing article about Bumblebees & plants. https://www.sciencealert.com/bumblebees-bite-plants-to-make-them-bloom
19.01.2022 Smokin in Tassie! Another cold morning of minus 1.2 degrees! Took a couple more groovy frost pattern photos, this morning. Always amazing to see the artistry of nature!... Just starting to process some of my 20 kilogram stash of dried mixed superhots from my most recent crop. The new batches of flakes & powders will contain an excruciating & colorful blend of FIFTY TWO different superhot varieties! I just hope there are enough folks, brave enough to have a crack at my evil offerings! The next few photos, show some marinated pods about to be cold smoked & the smoker "firing up". The pods will be cold smoked for eight hours or so! Then, it's back into the dehydrator for a couple of days. Then comes, the conversion to powders & flakes. Always the fun bit where I usually get nailed! Sneezing explosively for 10 minutes is a brain rattling & disturbing experience! The next photo is the UFO Cold Smoke Generator I use. This utterly awesome, well made device, has been used to smoke chillies, cheese, fish & other meats, salt & spices. The last photo is one of my finished products, Flamin Devil Smoked Chilli Flakes. My smoked powder actually won 3rd place in this years Mr Chilli Award, SO STOKED!
18.01.2022 Yet another frost this morning in Tassie! Brrrr & Grrrr! I am now picking pods at just semi-ripe stage & "parking" them on a tray in front of a sunny window. These pods, mostly "color up" within a few days. Removing them from my plants, which are dying slowly from the impacts of cold nights & frosty mornings. Unloading the plants, means they focus their feeble remaining energy on the few pods left. ... I am still getting a few pods that make me grin due to their awesome color. Both phenos of Pink Tiger x Peach Bhut continue to amaze me with their stunning colors! Last Pink Tiger x Reaper yielded 79 lovely pods today. This plant & Bhut Jolokia Ghost Giant Red, which also yielded some impressive pods today, are "parked) under my sand bed. Seems to help a little bit as a sort of "frost blanket". My own cross, Flamin Devil Orange is loaded with pods & tolerating the cold much better than it's unfortunate companions. I have been working on this Arseclown 7 Pot Yellow cross for over 5 years. My aim is to get a variety that survives & produces into winter. NOT an easy task in Tassie, but the Red, Pink & now Orange versions of this original cross, consistently outlast other varieties each season! Any rate, hope you folks are going well. Cheers from the shivering Flamin Devil in Tassie!
18.01.2022 Just hit the ONE THOUSAND seedlings in pots! Wow, what an incredibly busy few weeks it has been! My germination rate has been amazing from my own seed, but not so crash hot from seeds I purchased of was given!... I have had the best & fastest results with sowing onto moistened paper towel & placing into ziplok bag on my heated propagation bed. Once seeds show the slightest sign of the emerging root, they are transferred into Jiffy Preforma peat plugs. In just four or five days, the cotyledon leaves are open & roots can be seen at the bottom of the peat plugs! I then fill 75mm tubes with potting mix & make a hole in the middle with my finger. It is then a simple matter to grab the peat plugs with tweezers & place them in the holes. Oh yeah, 12 of my Rocotos that got belted by frosts made it through winter! After a savage haircut, they are re-shooting vigorously! For further info, click on the photos. SO SO happy, to be surrounded by chilli plants again, after a long cold winter! Cheers from a grinning Flamin Devil in Tasmania
17.01.2022 Competition time! Regan here from Flamin Devil Chiilies in Tasmania. I have been meaning to post this for a while! Guess the number of pods that I picked from... this awesome plant & win some free seeds (closest guess wins). CLUE: I had 3 big picks from it, before it died in the autumn frosts! This plant is a Reaper x Clavo Red x 7 Pot Green. I grew Reaper x Clavo Red from Fatali Finland, for a few years. It was the most productive superhot I had ever grown! I crossed it three years ago with 7 Pot Green in an attempt to increase pod size & hopefully retain productivity. Well the plan worked & here it is! For those of you that don't win, I have attached my seed list, PM for a great deal & check out my Flamin Devil page.

16.01.2022 Well the old Flamin Devil is a tad excited! It was a bit like an early Christmas, receiving my order from THE CHILLI CHICK shop! I just hooked into the SALTED CARAMEL CHIILI FUDGE & then the SALTED CHOCOLATE CHILLI FUDGE they are both UTTERLY delicious, OMG!... Somehow a teaspoon of the BEETROOT CHILLI RELISH also found it's way into my whiskered! Crikey Liesl, you are a dead set genius! Many chilli things have entered my ravenous gob over the years, but few have been as nice as this gear! I am grinning like a Bull Ant! AND I still have the HABANERO SICHUAN DUKKA & THE COCONUT SAMBAL to try! Already started hatching plans for lunch & the main meal tonight! This luscious tucker from THE CHILLI CHICK SHOP would make awesome gifts for a spice loving family member or friend.

15.01.2022 For those of you in cooler climates, may I suggest growing the awesome Rocoto varieties. I grow these in Tasmania, for a friend on Flinders Island, who makes am...azing chilli sauces from them. Flinders Island Condimental is the name of his business & the man is a genius, when it comes to making sauces & other condiments. I harvested almost 12 kilo's of Rocoto pods yesterday. The biggest pod, weighed a whopping 77 grams! They are fleshy, sweet & lovely to munch on. A fair few chunks found their way into my gob, while collecting seeds from them. These plants can live for over 10 years if they are protected from frost! If you are into sauce making & live in a suitable climate, give Rocoto's a go! You will fall in love!

All varieties are only $5.00 for a minimum of 10 seeds, (although I usually put 12 in the bag!) Postage is FREE! All seeds are "super fresh", as all were collected over the last 3 or 4 months. My aim is to provide other growers with seeds from my most productive plants, including seeds from a number of improved phenotypes, that I have specifically selected & bred over the last 5 or 6 years! 10.01.2022 In love with the DARK SIDE Last season, I grew a couple of dark leaf varieties for the first time & fell head over heels in love with them! First photo is Major Pain X Yaki Blue, an UTTERLY stunning plant, that stood out like a beacon amongst the green leafed plants. (Last photo is one of the cuttings taken from this plant)... Second & third photos are Pink Tiger X Peach Bhut Dark leaf pheno. At some stages the leaves were almost black on this plant! So, this old fella had to have more of the Dark Side & this season, the darkness will be spectacular! I present to you, my little dark friends, that have just been lovingly transferred to 300mm pots! I am so excited to see how they will turn out! I even got some dark Rio Grande seedlings from seeds I collected from last seasons plant. This has me puzzled, as I had no dark leaf plant nearby, that could have crossed with it! Black leaves really do matter, LOL!
09.01.2022 Still another month or so until I am brave enough to start germinating chilli seeds for the coming season! I have 120 varieties in the fridge, ready to go. But, frosts won't finish until mid to late September here in Tassie. So chilli entertainment at present, consists of selling seeds & making a new batch of powders & flakes. Heaven help the customers that buy them, as they contain a blend of fifty two different varieties of superhot pods. My last batch of powder contained a... mix of 23 varieties & I actually "cracked" 3rd prize in the 2020 Mr Chilli competition for my smoked chilli powder! Meanwhile, I am using the polytunnel & heated sand bed to grow native plants from seeds & cuttings. Gee it works a treat & well worth the one thousand dollar investment! It was amazing for the chilli & vegie seeds last spring & I was astonished to see pumpkin seedlings 50mm high in only 4 days from sowing! Attached pictures are of my frosty garden (check out the groovy frost patterns on the polytunnel wall!) & some of the beautiful natives I have managed to propagate from cuttings. Check out the groovy frost patterns on the polytunnel wall!
09.01.2022 Over the next few weeks, I will post information about my Premium Chilli Seed varieties. I hope the photos & information, may assist some growers, in deciding what to grow! Category: Non superhots & Ornamentals... Sometimes it ain't all about weapons grade heat! Some of these varieties put on a stunning display for months on end! Don't be misled by the "Ornamental" tag as the pods can still be eaten! I have labelled the photos with variety names & the number of pods, picked from each plant I collected the seed from. The Aji's are prolific producers & are fantastic for making non lethal sauce, using in stir fries or for infusing olive oil. I have a customer here in Tassie, who makes an Aji Lemon infused olive oil, that sells really well at markets! Rocotos can tolerate colder weather, but must be protected from frost! They can live for over 10 years in Peru, where they originate from! All seeds just $5.00 for 10 seeds with FREE postage PM me if interested Cheers, Regan - Flamin Devil Chillies - Tasmania
08.01.2022 Here's why I have to patiently wait, to start chillies each season! Nah, not really, usually it is due to frosty nights! Woke up this morning to find our property blanketed in 75mm of SNOW!!! Lived here for over 20 years & NEVER seen snow here! My first thought was, oh no, my polytunnels. So I raced outside with dread expecting to find them collapsed. Thankfully, they stood up to the hundreds of kilos of snow on the roofs! The only thing that saved the small tunnel, where ...I have my propagation bed, was the central metal support bar for the flatish roof. I could not push the bulged roof up from underneath, due to the weight of snow! Plenty of broken trees & other plants to contend with though! Going to be a busy day cleaning up. See more
05.01.2022 Germination comparison update. In my previous post regarding germination, I outlined the three methods I am trialing (all placed on my heated sand bed at thirty degrees with auto mist. Here are some results & comments. I hope other growers find it useful!... 1) Moistened paper towel in ziplok bag. Rocoto seeds took only four days to begin sprouting! Superhots started germinating in 7 days. Initially, I used ordinary household paper towel. But this is horrid to handle when wet & got a few mold spots too! I then switched to an industrial type paper towel, often found in workplaces etc. Great to handle, even when wet & NO mold! Germinated seeds were transferred into 75mm pots, just under surface & lightly covered with coarse sand. 2) Direct sown (5 seeds per mini pot) onto sandy seed raising mix & lightly covered with coarse sand. Seeds "popped up" in eight days. Once cotyledon leaves unfolded, I transferred into 75mm pots. 3) Direct sown into Jiffy Preforma peat plug trays. Seeds took nine days to begin sprouting. I have now potted over 200 germinated Rocoto seeds from 9 varieties. Over 100 germinated superhot seeds, have also been placed in pots! So, the simplest method, the old ziplok bag produced the fastest results! I do, however, like the Jiffy Preforma plug trays. Even though germination is slower, I like the idea of growing the germinated seeds undisturbed in the 20mm plugs. It will be an easy job, to transfer into 75mm pots AND best of all, no root disturbance! I still have plenty of top quality seeds from 72 varieties available for purchase (list attached). Seeds are only $5.00 for a minimum of 12 & postage is free! Cheers from Regan, Flamin Devil Chillies, Tasmania
04.01.2022 Flamin Devil Chillies, Tassie update I have been smashed with picking & processing, multitudes of pods from my ridiculously loaded plants! I cannot wait to post... my final pod counts, for each of my varieties. The dehydrator is chockers & has run constantly for ten days now! Yesterday, I spent 8hrs painstakingly dissecting pods, to collect seeds. Some of my new varieties, have finally started to ripen. It is so good to see my seed boxes filling up again! Night time temperatures are dropping & we have had a few nights as low as 6 degrees. Some plants are indicating their unhappiness, by the color of their leaves. This is my "heads up" to now spray every week with Purple Powerfeed. Seaweed based fertilizers contain alginates, which are scientifically proven to boost plant tolerance to unfavorable temperatures. Anyway, as usual, a swag of photos & all will have details in comments.
03.01.2022 Sitched up & Sated! Nailed my self quite comprehensively tonight for tea! Easy but savage fare, featuring some nice fish, I caught surf fishing on a pristine Tassie beach. ... Fillets adulterated with Flamin Devil Smoked Grinder Mix & Bacon seasoning. Pan fried with Ginger & Lemon Grass infused Olive oil. Some apple wood cold smoked mature cheese, I have been resisting opening since Christmas. Melted over the chips with a dusting of Flamin Devil Smoked Chilli powder & bacon seasoning Bree Rek OMG! And finally, the poor fish got hit with graffiti! Featuring some Siracha Mayo that has my Flamin Devil Mixed Chilli powder, blended into it!
02.01.2022 The end is near for most of my plants, after an epic season! Over the last few weeks, night temperatures have fallen to as low as 3.5 degrees in Launceston, Tasmania! I have put in a great deal of effort to keep my chinense superhots alive. They have been pruned to open them out, sprayed with nutrients to thicken plant cell walls, thereby "toughening" them to the cold. I have also shaken each plant vigorously to dislodge yellowing leaves & aborted flowers. But nature is winn...ing & the plants are down to their last few weeks of life! I am rather ashamed to post the first two pictures of my polytunnels, as they show the sadness of my dying "friends". The third picture is my "outdoor" grow area, showing the gaps caused by "fallen comrades". Forth picture shows a spent flower that has spread it's fungal spores to a leaf. If left alone, the fungal infection will spread to stems, then branches, causing "die-back" of whole sections of the plant! That is why I shake the hell out of the plants every couple of days, to dislodge dead & dying material! Good airflow in the tunnels helps too, If I close the vents, the fungal onslaught goes berserk! The next few photos show good "second crop" pod set on a few plants. Plant with reddish pod is Brazillian Ghost, other two are my own hybrids from Big Yellow Mama. Next photo is Major Pain x Yaki Blue, that has NOT stopped producing pods for 3 months. Such an awesome dark leaf plant, with stunning, ridiculously hot pods & one of my favorites this season! Next photos are Pink Tiger x Reaper. These were only germinated in October last year. So they produced late, but were very productive. Oh yeah, they are filthy hot too & stitched me up very nicely! Had 3 phenos from the one seed lot, plants with Red pods (in photo), also got plants with Orange Pods & some with Pink pods. The Red was the most productive, so I have collected seed from the best Red plant, to grow next season. Last photos are Rocoto's, that are loving the cold & will hopefully keep me amused through winter!
