NSW Attorney General, Mark Speakman The Chief Magistrate Judge Graeme Henson has announ...ced a raft of new measures for the Local Court to mitigate the risk of infection during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Local Court is the largest trial jurisdiction in Australia with more than 330,000 criminal cases dealt with by NSW magistrates in 2019 at over 140 locations. Judge Henson has been working closely with stakeholders including the Office of Director of Public Prosecutions, Legal Aid NSW, the Sheriffs Office, Department of Communities and Justice, Corrective Services, NSW Health and the NSW Police Force to address the issue. 07.01.2022 NSW Supreme Court requires all lawyers to work remotely There will be no more in-person hearings at the NSW Supreme Court, with matters to continue remotel...y using videolink and other technology where possible. The court announced the new policy on Sunday, as a response "to the developing COVID-19 pandemic". In line with the current health advice, on and from Tuesday, 24 March 2020 there shall be no personal appearances in any matters save in exceptional circumstances with the leave of the Chief Justice or head of jurisdiction. "This also applies to unrepresented litigants. All current jury trials will continue, but new juries will not be empanelled.
