25.01.2022 Dr Tom Brennan at the helm of our video endoscope at the Inglis Sales

24.01.2022 This is the result of a Broncho Alveolar Lavage (BAL) taken from a horse who had been suspected of having a minor lung bleed. The BAL involves washing the lung with Saline Solution and drawing it back out for analysis. The pathology in this case confirmed what was suspected. The horse was then able to be put on an effective treatment plan.

23.01.2022 Hematoma - This hematoma was caused by an accident with this standardbred in full harness. You can see the movement of fluid below the skin quite clearly on the near hind leg.

22.01.2022 FEC now has access to a veterinary dematologist, Dr Samantha Crothers, for those difficult or frustrating skin cases. Sam is married to our Equine Surgeon, Stuart, both whom have returned from USA following their specialist training. Check out her website for more details. http://www.vetdermconsultancy.com.au/

19.01.2022 This is a mare in late pregnancy which aborted the day before and presented laying down and in pain. Abdominal wall or pre pubic tendon has ruptured which can be seen by the udder being about 30 cm forward of its original position. This is a terminal condition and the mare was euthanized. This mare was over weight during pregnancy which would have predisposed her to this condition.

18.01.2022 Very appropriate given the seemingly dominant international raiders this year.

18.01.2022 Congratulations to Katja Weimann and Tarryn Proctor who competed at 3 Star level at the Melbourne International 3 Day Event at Werribee Park over the long weekend. Well done to Katja who took out the 3 Star competition!

17.01.2022 Congratulations to all of our clients who posted wins over the long weekend and good luck for the New Year

16.01.2022 This was taken after the wound was completely cleaned and stapled back together using a skin stapler. Whilst it looked incredibly serious, it came back together well and should heal well following a course of anti-biotics.

16.01.2022 Congratulations to all our staff who have been working around the clock for the last two months in the lead up to Spring Carnival. Five Group 1 winners has been testament to a job well done.

13.01.2022 This is another instance where horses and fences dont mix well. After getting a leg through a wire fence, this thoroughbred managed to slice itself the length of its cannon bone. Dr Adam Matthews cleaned the wound and stapled it up. The horse has made a full recovery and is back in work.

13.01.2022 Dr Ian Church getting into the Christmas spirit in the office

11.01.2022 This is the stomach lining of a 5yo thoroughbred in full work taken via gastroscope. Despite being on treatment, ulcers were suspected due to poor performance combined with a rough coat. Blood profiles also showed indications of ulcers. The horse had a number of lesions upon visual inspection which were actively bleeding into the stomach. The dosage of ulcer treatment was increased and the horse has shown good improvement.

10.01.2022 Special shout out to Dr Sarah Allen who is the 2014 recipient of the Peter Irwin Literary Award being presented at the Bain Fallon Lectures this evening. Well done Sarah!

10.01.2022 Supporting a good cause and young trainer Sam Kavanagh

10.01.2022 Many clients are worried about open wounds such as this one, taken of a thoroughbred who gashed himself on fence rail. The horse was stitched and given antibiotics during the initial examination. Despite looking poor to the untrained eye after the stitches breaking, the wound edges are healing well and following a full course of antibiotics, the wound fully healed.

03.01.2022 Good news for veterinarians and horse owners alike.

02.01.2022 The inimatable Dr Ian Church takes great pleasure in draining this substantial hematoma. The fluid is sterile and is drained from the bottom via a small incision after thoroughly scrubbing and disinfecting the site. With a course of antibiotics, the horse fully recovered.

01.01.2022 Royal Ascot - Dr Tom Brennan and wife Emma taking in Royal Ascot as part of their European vacation

01.01.2022 The pictured thoroughbred was presented for examination with left knee lameness. Upon assessing the limb and knee joint, it was quite apparent that the horse was substantially offset (benched kneed). Such abnormal conformation creates issues with the knee joint and the laying down of new abnormal bone where the pressure is occurring. The increased pressure down the entire inside of the lower limb creates issues with the splint bone and can also affect the feet. You can see the yellow line which displays the centre line through the lower leg and how the forearm is offset where it meets the knee joint.

01.01.2022 Congratulations to Paige Heffernan who took out Best Novice Showhunter Galloway and Champion Showhunter Galloway on Lynlea Paper Memories at the Royal Melbourne Show.
