04.01.2022 Web technology helping to make local history accessible. Fleurieu West Connect ('FWC') recently unveiled its latest project for the Fleurieu Coast. The FWC team has partnered with the Yankalilla & District Historical Society to develop an online history project. Called 'Stories of the Fleurieu Coast' the online project is part of this year's SA history festival. 'Stories of the Fleurieu Coast' was launched at the historic Normanville Hotel on Sunday 1 May 2016 by Mr Greg Mack...ie, newly appointed Chief Executive of History SA. Mr Mackie said he was pleased to see strong local involvement in the state-wide history festival. Dr Margaret Morgan, President of the Yankalilla & District Historical Society, said the Society was excited to explore the potential application of web technology to document local history. Dr Morgan encouraged everyone to get online and contribute by uploading historic material. Web Developer Rob Butler explained that the new history site (http://fleurieuconnect.com/stories) is easy to access and get involved with. "We hope everyone will want to contribute to building a more complete history of the Fleurieu Coast" said Mr Butler. "In a way we are crowd sourcing our historic content. The local Historical Society has generously granted access to their extensive digital collection of photos to get us started." A benefit of digital content is that it is easily shared, while the owner retains the original material. All types of content is suitable (eg photos, videos & stories) because the website is centered around places, people, events and the links between them. Mr Butler said Fleurieu West Connect was happy to help anyone digitise their material and upload suitable content. The FWC team may be contacted via this Facebook page. In 2015, Fleurieu West Connect launched a series of videos promoting a range of places, events and community organisations within the local district. The promotional videos are still available to view on fleurieuwestconnect.com.au/v/. Photo: Approaching Normanville on Main South Road circa 1900.
