16.01.2022 Could this be our last frost for the year? - These are the west beds at the flower farm. Last year it was a big block of 1500 dahlia plants, this year we have changed things a little. We try to rotate most of our crops, however this a great spot for the heat loving flowers like dahlias. It will be planted with one half dahlias and half zinnias, cosmos, sunflowers and gomphrena - They are all frost tender. 11.01.2022 And the dahlia season has come to an end. Although it felt like a super quick dahlia season, it’s time. The dahlia flowers are blowing their centres and inviting all the bees to come and help them procreate. The frost this morning knocked them back and they were ready. When the dahlias finish my first feeling is relief coupled with excitement. Relief, because I have 1000’s of other things to get into the ground that I was struggling to find time to do and excitement because... I have 1000’s of new babies to go into the ground. Although there is still plenty to do around the farm, the jobs are now different and they aren’t as fast paced. Thank you to everyone who bought our dahlias and flowers from Blake Family Grocer, Trentham IGA, Castlemaine Maxi SUPA IGA, Woodend General, Coburg Farmers Market, Gasworks Farmers Market, our Farm Stall and to our lovely florists. We have had the best fun this season and we can’t wait to for next season. In the meantime we will be selling our naturally dried flowers very soon, as well as our dahlia tubers, seeds, our cut- flower guide and also getting the pottery studio ready through winter. 10.01.2022 More cosmos going in today. We normally direct sow our cosmos seeds, however the slugs and snails have been horrendous this season so we want to give them a leg up! Janae & Chris Paquin~Bowden Founder & Florist at Fleur de Lyonville I recently had the pleasure of spending 2 days in Lyonville immersed in the stunning homestead of Janae and Chris Paquin-Bowden. Their organic seasonal flower farm has grown dramatically from their original stall. They now supply flowers to a huge number of groceries and business. The idea to grow and sell sustainable flowers came when they both struggled t...o find such flowers for their own wedding. They ended up trading a sheep for a van full of flowers which they collected on the big day. It was in that moment that Janae said that’s what I want to do for my next job! They saw a gap in the market and during maternity leave, from her full time job as a primary school teacher, Janae and Chris sowed their first crop. They both love being outside, getting their hands dirty and amongst the sounds of the birds. But they both contest to it being The Hard Good Life. Janae’s top tips for creators taking the leap of faith with their own ideas is to start it as a side hustle to make sure there’s a market for your concept. The other top tip for time management as Janae juggles two children, chickens, sheep and lamas along with her beautiful blooms is to work around the kids. Janae wakes at 5.30am to give herself a few hours before the kids wake up. It allows her to feel like she’s ahead of herself and it’s uninterrupted quiet time. It also allows her to knock off at 3.30pm and enjoy her family time. The joy that the Flowers @fleurs_de_lyonville spread is testimony to the love and dedication that Janae and Chris put in to them. 07.01.2022 Thank You! - Our little flower farm has had a busy start to the season. When Covid-19 hit back in Autumn we, like many other businesses, tweaked a few things to help make our business work best for us. We are now stocking more local grocers with our chemical-free flowers and are really enjoying this new focus. We will still do our fortnightly Melbourne Farmers Markets, because honestly it’s so lovely to see old faces and meet new ones and get away from the farm. Chris and I... love heading into the city. We also still do weddings, big, small and/or super casual. Our new website will be launched soon with more information about what our wedding packages include, as well as an E-Commerce shop to make things easier for you to buy a special bouquet for someone special - As we expand our farm we will continue to add more and more pretty friends to grow. In the meantime, we are very lucky to have many clever flower farmers that also grow chemical-free flowers in our region. These legendary folks have helped top up our orders with some of their flowers over the last few weeks and we just wanted to say, THANK YOU! The quality of your flowers are incredible. Although we still grow at least 90% of our own flowers here at Fleurs de Lyonville and at my parent’s place, we are so lucky to mix them with flowers grown locally from the following farms.
