25.01.2022 Thanks to Flexicut Engineering for these spool mounts!

24.01.2022 Our good mate Todd Kelly has listed his three custom #Kawasaki Jet Skis after crossing Bass Strait and making it back to the race track, where his Altona adorne...d with our boatsales' livery competes in this weekend's Townsville 400. Now, imagine what you could do with these adventure 'skis'. Game fishing, island exploration, coastal cruising perhaps... See more

21.01.2022 Perkins Engineering - Where are they now? is back today! This is the 4th edition. It's been a little while since the last one, but we've been busy chasing a few... along the way, so hopefully not too long between the next few! A big thank you to everyone we profile, for finding the time to answer the questions, it's always a great read! Name: Robbie OBrien RobbieO Where are you from? Uralla, a little town in northern NSW, full of Farmers, Sheep and cattle. What were you doing prior to working at Perkins Engineering? Pretty much School, year 12, and working on the farm and Dads metal fabrication business. When did you start and finish at PE? 2 weeks prior to Phillip Island 1999 (the McDougal Sausage crash) And finished up Christmas break up 2004. I was at PE for a total of 6 awesome years, I decided to move on so I could stop working 100hrs a week!! It was very sad day to leave that place as I practically lived there, and knew nothing else besides PE life. What was your position(s) at PE? The first 2 years at PE I was working every position possible, the one job I excelled at was chief driver of the old yellow ute, there was many trips to pick Jack up from school in the arvo's (strangely there was a point where LP instructed that I had to start picking Jack up in the white ute, this was the slightly up spec work ute that only got used for special occasions) I do unofficially take credit for the start of Jacks driving career as the L plates were always slapped on the ute for the trip back to PE from the school run!! I was very lucky in my first 2 years to be able to float around the workshop to help out whichever department that was under the pump at the time, I learnt so much from this. I went to all the races, in the early years it was on the customers cars, then moving on to the main Castrol cars. My main job at the PE after completing my apprenticeship was running the machine shop, we made some pretty cool stuff. How did you get the job at PE? I met LP at AGquip, a farming show in 1998, I was not really interested in the motorsport side of things but more so the engineering side, and back then LP was the man renowned for one of the smartest guys when it comes to engineering anything with nuts and bolts, so I proposed to LP that I come and work for him for free for a few weeks, and if all works out hopefully lead into an apprenticeship. A couple months after that meeting I completed my 2 weeks at PE, went back home and waited for the phone call to no avail, couple of months later I rang PE but could never get past Kim, LPs PA, so one morning a rang at 7.32 am before Kim was in, got straight on to LP, and I started to ramble on to him, before I could even get a few words out he abruptly said see you Monday, this was a Friday I rang and I was 1300klms away! What are your first memories of PE and indeed first memories of LP? The first memory of the PE factory was the 30 or so old tractors lined up in the second factory and a few outside as well, all in a far from healthy state, I was wondering what I have actually got myself into! Then it was getting to know all the very unique individuals, Oscar Fiorinotto and Tony Dee (Tony Dumesny) always plays a special role with my younger days there, I soon worked out that LP had a pretty talented bunch of guys. LP was good, dont get me wrong but gee his guys were pretty bloody good as well. LP was always hands on working on the development stuff with the motorsport, but not only the motorsport, there were many projects around the shop that he spent many hours on, one comes to mind was a pre-stratified 5hp Honda engine. How did you find traveling around Australia/NZ with a Professional Racing Team? Awesome, it was such a great time in my life, it was so cool having a career that you could spend the week working towards something and then having the weekend to put your work to the test. Best moments/result/achievements/memories from your time at PE? The most rewarding and memorable moment for me was Bathurst 2003 I think, the year LP put it in the wall on the Saturday practice, we PE as a team excelled that night, a car that should have been put in the truck. We got stuck in and repaired to race ready condition by Sunday morning, we worked all night, everyone involved did an amazing job, that morning LP and Richos little speech they gave us was a pretty special moment, I will never forget that one. Do you have a LP/PE story thats funny or memorable? Jacks first go as a passenger in the race car with LP was a pretty funny one, just make sure you ask JP about that one, I will let him tell you that story!! (EDIT from JP: This was at the end of a Winton Test Day and I was promised a hot lap with Dad. When the time came along for a ride there were no passenger seats in the truck! So I sat on the floor, LP driving Dugal's car, hanging onto the roll cage, wearing a helmet of course! It was all good fun and Dad dropped a wheel off the exit curb of the final corner and got some mud down the side of the car! Good times, but back to Robbie-O's yarn!) Another one was a Saturday Morning, LP and I Got this old Plane going, it was called a Chipmunk, LP was out the front hand cranking the prop while I was in the cockpit mainly just to hold the brakes on. All of a sudden it fired and raced off down the bitumen. LP thought he had it on Idle but really he set it on full throttle, and the brakes, well they simple did not work. Pretty bloody funny seeing LP on foot chasing me down the taxiway trying to resolve the situation. It took about an hour to explain to him that he stuffed it up and not me! What are you doing these days and are you still involved in the Racing world? For the last 10 years I have been running a company called Flexicut Engineering, We offer CNC Machining services, based on the typical Motorsport model Small Batch, High quality, Fast turnaround, complex Parts. I am very lucky to have met many workmates at my time at PE, which in time have turned in to being customers to Flexicut. Most of the work we do is for the motorsport world, which is great, always fun making parts that have been engineered to perform. What have you taken from your time at PE that you carry with you today, whether its experience or some advice etc. Well the nightmares are still there!! LP can be a very intimidating person, tough and a master at getting the best from his crew. In saying that he is a very complex person that only a genius could work out is way of thinking. I try to conduct my business in the same manner that happened at PE, whilst an employee you question the man a lot but it all makes sense once you start running your own business, and I am thankful to LP and PE for that. To strive for quality, apply effort, and deliver a package that is superior are key lessons learnt from PE. Anything else? Story? Memory? So many! One that comes to mind is when I broke my wrist, so LP deemed me useless at work, he instructed drive 3 x 200ltrs drums of Avgas up to Cowangie, LPs farm. Driving the ute, changing gears with my right hand as the left one is broken, trying to steer with my knee at the same time, with a lot of kaboom on the back was a strangely memorable time. I loved the fact that back then we made it happen, we did not complain, we just got the job done correct! END

14.01.2022 "Perhaps it is the capacity of all ordinary humans to do extraordinary things when coupled with extreme circumstance. "To fight harder, march further, dig deeper, move despite overwhelming odds, and care for wounded mates. No matter what the personal imposition or risk. Even if that risk means death. "This is a spirit worthy of renown, praise and striving to achieve. This is a human spirit, the Anzac spirit....
