18.01.2022 Meet Ena Echidna. She lives in a remote area of the Flinders and has visited us a couple of times where we stop for lunch at this waterhole and wait to see if she is around. When you walk this country you never know who you are going to meet or when. At the beginning of the walk we bumped into this dad and his grown up no longer chicks. He will do the sole parent thing for maybe 2 years. While mum is out partying with another flock. Then later on this little guy, a gecko no less, started sunning itself on my shoe. All quite enchanting really and all in a days walking. That and more. Come and be enchanted with this place we call the Flinders Ranges and this mob simply call home, and maybe meet some new friends.

16.01.2022 Here is the far north Flinders Ranges, as you can see there is no one else around, except us. It may look remote and isolated, and it is, but just at the bottom of the valley an hour or so away is a refreshing wine and tasty food. And a comfy bed. What more could you want. 08.01.2022 The ubiquitous 'Grass Tree',Yacca, Blackboy or Xanthorrhoea is hardy specimen. It loves a fire, lives on no water, on hardy terrain and in nutrient poor soils and takes ages to grow. It can live to 700 years at a pinch and might grow an inch a year. The indigenous people used them to make spears and the resin to fix stuff. A friend once found one covered in native bee honey. They promptly got out their spoons and had a delicious snack right there. It must of been a one off be...cause I always check and I've never seen one with honey on it. These doyens of the desert are now on show. In the Flinders Ranges. And so is this bit of 600 million year old bit of seafloor. Come and see them this winter. See more

07.01.2022 Our new tour is the Flinders Botanica, and this is the magnificent River Red Gum, Eucalyptus camaldulensis and is probably over 500 years old. By a funny turn of fate it was first described in Napoli and named after a monastery by a German head gardener in 1832 from seeds sent by an English botanist Allan Cunningham some years earlier. Eucalypt fossil pollen has been been dated to 60 million years. Survivor. The tree here is the Cazneaux Tree and its image titled 'The Spirit of Endurance' was a world wide hit in 1937, an icon of the Flinders it is loved by generations of visitors who come to visit and walk these hills. 01.01.2022 One of the things people love about the Flinders Ranges is walking through these forests of Callitris Pine. While they grow in most states it is unusual to be able to walk through them on made trails all day and is always a take home memory. It's an evocative landscape, poised on the edge of the desert, a finger of uplifted boney old mountains with secret pockets of relict flora. Delightful. The Flinders is a bounty of walks and each day reveals another facet, another mood and another character to this primordial bunch of old rocks. And there are emus too. Come and see them some time.
