25.01.2022 Life’s a Beach. Rambling walks on our many beautiful island beaches with fun-loving dogs racing into the waves.. What’s good for dogs and their people CAN be good for everyone. Petiquette Checklist: * Is my dog under control and not being a nuisance to other people or other dogs? * Are their nesting birds around?... Dogs, birds, and beaches can go together providing dogs are kept near the water’s edge and away from the high tide mark where beach-nesting birds have their nests. * Minimising disturbance to birds such as oystercatchers and small shorebirds is important because their numbers are declining. These birds nest directly on beaches or in dunes. Come along to a get together of dogs and their owners to discuss dog use areas and how dogs and birds can share our beaches. SUNDAY 22nd NOVEMBER 9:00am - Holloway Park - Lady Barron 11:30am - Whitemark Showground FREE DOGGIE SNACKS & LEAD GIVEAWAYS I’m a wet sand walker and I don’t chase chicks! 21.01.2022 A big thank you to everyone who braved the elements to attend the dog’s breakfast events at Lady Barron and Whitemark last Sunday. Flinders is very fortunate to not only have the amazing birdlife that we do on the Island but also the dedication of amazing professionals such as Eric Woehler who regularly visits the island to document bird statistics. This expedition was centred around the Hooded Plover and the international significance of the numbers sustained on Flinders Is...land. Further information may be found at: https://birdlife.org.au/locations/birdlife-tasmania or on their facebook page BirdLife Tasmania A few Shorebirds identification brochures are still available at Council. As Eric’s work is totally voluntary, funds to support BirdLife Tas are raised through donation and the sale of tea towels printed with our shorebirds. If you would like to grab a tea towel and support BirdLife Tas, please pop into The Purple Swamphen and grab one or two!!

17.01.2022 Tasmanian Public Health officials continue to monitor COVID-19 developments in Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales (NSW). This information informs our loca...l response. Tonight, Queensland ends its three-day lockdown of the Greater Brisbane. This action was taken to prevent spread from a case with a highly infectious strain of coronavirus. Queensland Health has done extensive contact tracing and testing around this case and has so far identified no new cases. High rates of testing in the wider Brisbane population have not detected locally acquired cases. These findings provide reassurance that persons who may be at higher risk of acquiring infection directly from the case have been identified and are being managed to contain the risk. Because of this, Tasmania is changing our advice to people who arrived in Tasmania before 9am on 8 January and who were in the Greater Brisbane area on or after 2 January. These people no longer need to self-isolate and may resume their normal activities in Tasmania. The risk to people who were in Brisbane from 8 January onwards is less certain but will become clearer this week as the ongoing investigations of Queensland Health progress. Because of the this, Greater Brisbane remains classified as a high-risk area. This means that any person who arrived in Tasmania after 9am on 8 January and was in the Greater Brisbane area on or after 2 January is still required to quarantine. If you been in the Greater Brisbane area since 2 January please check the contact tracing alerts at https://www.qld.gov.au//cor/current-status/contact-tracing. If you have been at any of these places at the dates and times, contact the Tasmanian Public Health Hotline on 1800 671 738 to arrange a test. Queensland Health has also identified three sites in Maleny on the Sunshine Coast Cappriccios Italian Pizza Restaurant on 6 January and Purple Palate Cellars and Woolworths on 7 January as locations where persons who were there should self-isolate and get tested. Earlier today Victoria reported no new locally-acquired cases of COVID-19 for the fourth day in a row, while NSW Health reported four locally-acquired cases three linked to the Berala cluster and one from Mount Druitt which is under investigation. People now in Tasmania who have been in Victoria or NSW since December 26 should continue to check the latest list of COVID case locations. The Victorian list is at www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/case-locations-and-outbreaks, the NSW list is at https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/latest-news-and-updates. If you were at any of the listed sites at the specified date and time, please contact the Tasmanian Public Health Hotline on 1800 671 738 for further advice. If you get any cold or flu symptoms, even mild, please contact the Public Health Hotline on 1800 671 738 to arrange a test. Visit www.coronavirus.tas.gov.au for the latest Tasmanian information.

12.01.2022 Sharp Airlines Travel Advice Please note that the Australian Government have mandated the wearing of face masks on all domestic flights for all persons* in Australia as an additional preventative measure to prevent geographical spread of COVID-19. Mask wearing is also mandatory in indoor areas in domestic airports depending on jurisdictional assessment.... All persons must be wearing their masks at terminal entry, during check in, at the time of boarding, throughout the entire flight, and until they have left the terminal building. Any passenger who refuses to wear a mask will be denied travel, unless they are under 12 years of age or have a medical condition that means they cannot wear one. Any passengers that do not have their own face mask will be provided one free of charge as per Sharp Fly Safe Packs. The restrictions and conditions around COVID19 and travel are changing constantly, so please keep up to date as best as possible.

05.01.2022 Good mates Amanda Blyth and Claire Castle share many things. Energetic and friendly personalities, a passion for family, and love of the great outdoors. These t...hirty-something go-getters are the dynamic duo behind Mountain Biking Flinders Island a fledgling new enterprise encouraging both visitors and locals alike to get out and explore the island on two wheels. These busy mums take a lot in their stride. Between them they’re juggling young children, work commitments, family businesses and cattle farms. Whilst the prospect of a new joint venture would have weakened others at the knees, Mountain Biking Flinders Island launched itself onto the scene in 2018 with enviable enthusiasm. Come on a ride with Amanda and Claire and find out how they are 'keeping it real' on Flinders. In their words, "We sometimes describe it as ‘learning to be remote’. Basically our philosophy is about slowing down, getting outside and enjoying things." Catch the story here - https://www.thetasmaniantuxedo.com/all-/74-keeping-it-real/
