15.01.2022 Whining. It seems to grate on parents nerves more than most behaviors. Ive heard and read some interesting approaches to make it stop. Most of these phrases... or strategies are more hurtful than helpful. Lets explore: Whining is programmed to get parents attention. Children whine when theyre stuck in their emotional brain. Meaning they feel disconnected, overwhelmed, or vulnerable. Instinctually they go to parents for reassurance, help regulating, connection. The tricky part is, they often ask for the above items by whining. Many of us are triggered by whining. We were never allowed to whine as children. We had to repress those feelings of loneliness, being misunderstood, feeling unheard, so hearing those messages from our children brings up all kinds of yuck. The behavioral world has come up with some phrases to deal with whining: I cant hear/understand you when you talk like that. Use your big kid voice. These phrases break my heart. The child who is asking: Do you hear me? Do you understand me? Help me, please. Is shut down. What gets to the heart of whining? Helping a child feel understood and validated. How do you we do that? Reflective listening/talk. You really want a turn with that. You want me to hold you right now and Im cooking. You didnt want her to take that from you. Sometimes, Ill even throw-in some reassurance: You want me to hold you right now and Im cooking. I want to hold you and I will as soon as I finish mixing this up. or a skill: You want a turn with that balloon. Ask him: Can I have a turn? My default language to my children is reflective talk. Its so powerful that its the first tool I teach parents and my first workshop I ever did was 100% about reflective talk. Next time your kiddo whines, focus on validating instead of correcting and see what happens!

07.01.2022 Billys tip of the week! Heading into school, it is fundamental that children are confident in their social and emotional development. A significant skill in ma...naging emotions is the ability to self-regulate and understand different feelings, behaviours and reactions in a variety of situations. An important part of emotional resilience is to be able to identify the things we like to do to feel calm and relaxed. This is just as important for children too! Talk through a few different activities your child likes to do to feel calm and encourage them to try these out if they are feeling sad or angry.

05.01.2022 Hi, my name is Lisa and I have had my diploma in early childhood services for seven years and have been in the industry for ten years. I am a big advocate on assisting children in recognising and regulating their emotions and providing behaviour management skills that can help the individual child for a successful transition into Primary education, as well as social interactions. My philosophy in relation to my role as an early childhood educator is to promote nature and nurture the children with a mutual respect.
