23.01.2022 Approached by someone offering unusually cheap tax services or promising refunds that are too good to be true? Beware of unregistered preparers! Remember, only... a registered tax agent can charge a fee to prepare and lodge your tax return. Today an unregistered preparer from Sydney received a criminal conviction for dishonestly obtaining a financial advantage. Charging a $100 fee, he used the personal myGov credentials of 1,098 individuals to lodge tax returns on their behalf, redirecting some of the refunds into his own bank account. 08.01.2022 Fraudster behind bars: Today a Queensland man was sentenced to jail for stealing the identities and tax refunds of 52 people. The 27-year-old set up an elabor...ate online employment scam, offering fake jobs to people after conducting seemingly legitimate phone interviews. He convinced successful applicants to provide their tax file numbers (TFNs), bank account details and drivers licences, which he then used to get his hands on their tax refunds. Scams come in various forms, so remember to be cautious and protect your personal info. You should only provide your TFN to a new employer after youve started work using an official TFN declaration form. If you think your identity has been compromised, contact us for help straight away at https://www.ato.gov.au//Identity-security/Your-identity-s/
