15.01.2022 Dr Rodrigo Praino and Associate Professor Gerry Redmond help Factcheck: was Christian Porter right about welfare spending and income tax? Under Labor after the GFC, the welfare system was costing over 100% of all income tax raised. Thats clearly an unsustainable position that simply puts the burden of welfare payments on future generations through higher debt. Under the Coalition that has reduced to around 80%. Social Services Minister Christian Porter, quoted in The Australian, May 22, 2017.

13.01.2022 Our colleague Professor Don De Bats, has just had a fascinating new article published. The article argues that individuals more socially proximate to elites turn out at a higher rate and individuals more socially proximate to a given political partys elites vote disproportionately for that party. The results suggest an overlooked social component of voting. See the full version of the article here: https://www.cambridge.org//25A487ADEAACB38285074740D9E39BC2

10.01.2022 A recent blog by Professor John Dryzek at the University of Canberra argues "In 1927, American philosopher John Dewey famously wrote that the cure for the ailments of democracy is more democracy. Today, we can see that one cure for the ailments of democracy is a more ecological democracy. Democracy now needs more trees and less Trump."

06.01.2022 Upcoming free public lecture by the current Flinders University Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Applied Public Policy - Modernizing Public Policy: Putting Private Capital to Social Purposes. The industrial era Welfare State is confronted with challenges for which it is unprepared: rising economic inequality, increasing capital flight, bureaucratic inertia, diminished opportunities for marginalized citizens, and expanding social markets for low income households. Coupled with these are maximized public debt and an unwillingness to by Governments to increase taxes, resulting in reduced international competitiveness and adverse social outcomes such as diminishing upward mobility, intransigent poverty, social isolation, increased antisocial behavior. All of which have consequences for the social fabric of society.
