20.01.2022 This month is April Falls Month, an awareness campaign focusing on the prevention of falls, particularly in older Australians. 1 in 4 people over the age of 60 will have a fall this year and while this can be sometimes related to the ageing process there are a number of preventative measures that can be put in place to help minimise this risk. Below are seven preventable causes of falls that can assist in reducing the incidences of falls occurring:... 1. Unsafe footwear 2. Changes in vision / eye disorders 3. Inappropriate medication use 4. Hazards in the house including poor lighting and slippery surfaces 5. Hazards in public places including uneven footpaths and a lack of rails on stairs 6. Poor balance and fitness 7. Poor management of chronic health conditions Physiotherapists play a vital role in the prevention of falls and can provide strategies and a tailored exercise program to put in place to prevent falls from happening. More information regarding our falls prevention plan can be found on our website under 'Improving Your Stay': flindersprivatehospital.org.au/pati/admission-and-discharge #AprilFallsMonth #AprilFallsDay

16.01.2022 Today marks 12 years since Flinders Private Hospital became the first hospital in Australasia to begin Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) procedures using a balloon expandable valve, a game-changing technique in Cardiology. This can be attributed to Associate Professor Ajay Sinhal (pictured), Interventional Cardiologist and Associate Professor Jayme Bennetts (Cardiothoracic Surgeon) along with the multidisciplinary team involving cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, v...ascular surgeons, radiologists, anaesthetists, geriatricians and TAVI nurse coordinators within Flinders Private Hospital who are involved in the care of the patient undergoing the procedure. A TAVI procedure removes the need for open heart surgery, by replacing a diseased heart valve with a collapsible aortic valve that can be inserted using a catheter through the femoral artery in the groin and into the heart. This procedure has improved the quality of life for hundreds of South Australians.
